The surprise was that my cats have peed or ejected large amounts of saliva, all over my sofa.

The other surprise was that my saliva does not glow under the UV light.  Whatever that means.

You're a nonnie, if this test works:  welcome to the club !  You got to find out the cheap way.

And thanks for the warning:  that is, I won't be plugging a fluorescent black light in around any furniture.  What happens on the sofa stays on the sofa.

I know what I used to think that meant.  I know what CSI said it meant.  My secretor test results contridict that school of thought.  I don't know what to tell you.

I didn't check cat slobber for glow.... here kitty kitty kitty

I'm just saying, let's just hope it's cat spit, and I don't want to know.

Yeah, I just read the other thread, Cybertooth.  Why you have to go messing up the easy test for us?    Do you know whether you're RH- or +?  Would that affect anything? (Sorry if that was answered in the other thread).

gosh jill I wished you had of.  Could at least put that girl boy thing to rest.  So far... igbogirl, plhartless and me all come up non-glow, but we are all female.  My mate glows... wait... no HE doesn't, his spit does.

I've never used my black light to test my spit.  It was purchased eons ago, to try to find all the hidden kitty pee in this house before I rented it.  Maybe I'll spit some, and see what happens.

Many of the nifty sounding tests/proceedures presented on the CSI shows are not factual.  TV guide eons ago took three shows, and asked RL CSI type experts to evaluate the validity/ability of the tests/proceedures used on the three episodes, to RL CSI crime labs.

Every show had some some issue/test/proceedure that the RL CSI's could not do.  (In other words, testing for something that was fantasy/could not be done.)  Yes, there was some real science there, but the RL CSI types could not do a majority of what these shows tried to do.

So, I'd take CSI's testing for something, and keep it on the "entertainment" side of television.

Oh, the visuals...............
This is an interesting thread. Will have to see if I can find a blacklight and give it a shot. On both things.

OH I agree it's entertainment... TV that is and give about as much credence to it as the morning news' health tips.

Before I conducted my unscientific test, I did research and found that the things that secrete into our saliva if we do indeed secrete are ABH antigens and apparently that is what has the capability of fluorescing.  It made sense to me to try it.  On two separate occasions, two of us spitting, only one of us glowing... same person both times.  Mine did not glow.

Ok, you talked me into it.....or shall I say "talked me into asking my husband where it is".  Hopefully it's not packed away in the garage or we might as well forget about it.  So I need a manilla envelope to spit on?  Do I just need to wet the paper or leave a puddle?  Oh I hope the doggie doodles don't show up on my carpet.

One more thing though, I'm a female too.  Or do you want me to do my whole family?  One male here of unknown secretor status.  My oldest has been checked and is secretor.  My youngest daughter is unknown.  If my doggie is a secretor we're in trouble, she chews on everything she can get her teeth around (tonight the TV remote!), love dirty socks, gloves, she drools and any other gross thing she can think of.  Can't wait to see what that light does.

Oh, I think he went to look for it now.  Tick-tock-tick-tock......

Ok, we found it and had a blast in the laundry room, which looks VERY filthy after seeing it under black light.  And I just cleaned that room top to bottom last week.  We all had bleachy looking stains on our jeans (and no we didn't pee on them) and our laundry soap spills on top the washer and dryer looked like radioactive waste stains.  Our complexions were terrifying.  My husband's pupils were white and he looked like something from a nightmare I had as a child.  Oh you want to know about glowing spit though, don't you????

We were only able to test 3 of us cuz daughter #1 is in the shower (and very slow moving).  All of our spit looked purple, like the light, but I wouldn't necessarily say it glowed.  We used a manilla file folder.  Mine had the least bubbles in it so it was the least purple colored.  I was thinking like the spit test, no bubbles.  My husband and youngest had quite a bit of bubbles in theirs so theirs was a deeper shade and especially where the bubbles were.  Am I grossing y'all out yet?  So IS IT ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO GLOW OR JUST LOOK PURPLISH?

Ours is a florescent tube light so it should be the right kind of light.  I'll test my other daughter if she ever comes out of the shower.

I've come in late on this thread so I don't know what you are testing for, but anyway - if you see glowing material in the the laundry - shows the laundry soap merchants used radioactive or contaminated fill in their products. We used to do a test on mainstream commercial shampoos and other cosmetics to show what garbage is used in their bulk fill material. 'Pert' 2 in 1 shampoo (I have never ever even tried that as it smelt off to me, even as a kid) needs sunnies to behold it under black light! (or it used to, haven't tried for a few years).
scarey stuff!

side note....do you guys use Purex?  'Cause that makes my jeans glow....phosphates?  (phosphorescence?)

Good question.  Even under the incandescent bulb my bubbles looked a little purply, but I thought that was just because the bubbles are white and white glows purple under black light.

No phosphates in my laundry detergent.  I use Melaleuca Mela Power.  Unless they've changed it over the years.  WE all had spots all over us.  I'm assuming the spot on my jeans was an otherwise invisible stain?  OUr faces were terribly peppered with looked like scars.  We looked horrible.  My 11 year old was afraid of us.  And I was afraid of my husband.  Hope I don't have nightmares tonight!!!  Gosh I can start a new thread tomorrow!!!  I know I used some OxyClean today and put salt in the water softner tonight so powder from the salt is what I think we were looking at.  I know one thing, I need to clean up that room again tomorrow!  Oh but the best part was our linoleum that is 18 years old looked absolutely beautiful....it looked like some medium brown ceraminc tile instead of light beige on off white linoleum.  We were hoping if we took it in the living room it would make our carpet look like wood flooring, but the light quickly got scooped up by my girls who talked their father into mounting it to the wall in their bedroom.  I can't wait to see how dirty that room is now.  Now I have to go catch my oldest daughter and have her spit for me.....

daughter #1's spit turned purple as well.  I still can't say that it glowed but it turned purple like the light where most things just turned bright white.  All my dust shows up just perfectly.  I think I'll take that light down tomorrow.

Just curious, is there some reference to non-secretor saliva not glowing under black light versus secretor saliva indeed glowing? Would appreciate it, if there was.

Dr. D-it all started on another thread (tried to look for it, but couldn't find it and don't have time right now) when someone mentioned that on CSI (television show) it had been said that under a black light secretors saliva is floresent and nonnies are not.

We have a black light, but I am not sure if it is a very good one as none in the family glowed (maybe we are all nonnies), but then the bathroom didn't have any mysterious markings anywhere either.  (Oh my Deb...what a good housekeeper you are).

Maybe this should be put to test. For any willing parties who know their status and would be willing to conduct this test, it may put a lot of questions to rest. I am ready to know for sure if it works or not. I have been reading these threads for days now and just want to know, Does it work or not? Anyone else out there feel the same way.

This may be a good poll.

My fault... after sending in my sample, my hubby told me that he heard on CSI that secretor status could be seen with black light.

I did some googling and got the notion that the ABH antigens were what fluoresed under black light.

There was a distinct difference between my spit and that of my hubby's.  His fluoresed, mine did not.  We did this two different times with the same results.

Needless to say I was quite surprised to get my results.

Thanks sassy, no, I don't and it's not likely he will submit a sample.

The way I understand it, and I looking really hard for something to back this up, but it's the antigens that fluoresce under black light.  I'll post if I find something.

No, sadly I don't know his status.  With his present mindset, I doubt seriously if I could talk him into testing.

Does anyone know what exactly fluoresces in saliva?  I've shifted my focus away from the medical and more to the forensic and made a little head way.  I found many pages that claimed saliva "usually" fluoresces under black light.

Since 80% of the population secretes...

I finally gave up since I have to leave for Portland in a few minutes.  I decded to email a company that sells black lights to detectives and point blank ask them about it.

We need more nonnies to try this.  I think the bubbles actually helped doing it this way.  Let's keep this thing going.

I'm trying to talk Hubby into investing in a black light.  I thought he had one already (from his poster days), but no.  Thanks to whoever mentioned pet-supply stores.  I knew about that use of black lights, but somehow it never occurred to me that pet-supply stores would actually sell the things!

Tigress -- Very curious to know what the detective-supply store says.  (Maybe they sell the lights so you'll know whether your detective has peed on the carpet?)

We think Hubby's a secretor, so this should be interesting.  (Though it would be one more case of secretor male & nonnie female -- sorry about that!)

Here's the reply from the detective store guy:

Thats a bit out of my realm of info. I can point you to forensic
sources online that givbe info on florescent evidence. its
http://www.redwop.com/technotes.asp

Good luck,
Tom

PS, often times black, blue and uv lights are used with orange
goggles to increase visibility. They show that on csi too.

I went to the site he referred me to and searched for secretor with no results.

One of the big chain pet stores sells a "feline stink finder" for $15.99 if that helps.  If I'm not mistaken, that is the very one I bought.  I think they also had a smaller version with a bottle of phewey stinkey cat pee cover upper for less money.

Well-I don't think this is a sure way of finding out secretor status.  CSI program or not.   Bought a few different types and still no results.  Have even tried it on other people who are not family members (especially when I think we are all nonnies).   Going the sure fire way with a secretor test for the hubby.  I would be very surprised if he isn't one.  Which will mean I have to order two more.

At least 50% of what they propose they can do/find out on the show(s) CSI is pure fiction.  It's entertainment tv, not educational tv.

hi all, I ran upstairs and got my old black light out after reading this thread. I think I am not a secretor, and I have a hunch that my mother does secrete. We took saliva samples (one each) and tested them,... sure enough her spit glowed. and yes I mean glowed, not just the bubbles but the liquid around the bubbles. My spit however, did not glow and looked absolutely clear... it was so cool seeing them next to each other, one gleaming proudly and the other clear as it was before the blacklight was turned on. so maybe there is something to this thing?... At any rate this is happy news for me as I have come to enjoy the food benefits of non-secretor B-dom. Especially bene fruits.... Long live berries. Hurrah

We then checked my father out, and his spit glowed brightly too. I then rechecked mine on another surface, and still, it was a no-glow.

i hope there is merit to this testing....and if not, no harm done.

Hmmm, in your family's case, both of the Rh+ saliva samples glowed, and the Rh- sample did not.  Do we have an alternative explanation?  If it is the Rh factor, though, does the test work only for secretors?  Or does everyone secrete their Rh factor?  Wow, a whole new can of worms -- yum!

I'm A+ Nonnie and my spit does not glow under blacklight. Tested 3 separate times and no glow.

I'm Rhesus positive and my spit did not glow!

This is an interesting thread... I'm curious now about this, too.  Would a black light bulb do the trick at testing this?  Anyone else do an experiment with this?  I'm looking forward to most posts.  Best, Stefani

To test for secretor status?

The only way to truly know is to invest in the secretor test.  Only way.

Does anyone know what a blacklight does show for sure?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_light

see under uses section

Sounds like they just show if it is a bodily fluid - but how?

It is so pleasant to explore nature & oneself at the same time, doing violence neither to her nor to one's own spirit, but bringing both into balance in gentle, mutual interaction.

I know a black light shows cat and dog urine stains. When we moved into our new house, all the carpets, and the first floor wood floor and walls were covered in that lovely glowing stuff. But it sure helped to see what needed to be cleaned better, and what needed Kilz to cover it up.

It is not my responsibility to convince anyone of anything.

+ or - is a true blood type and only exists in the blood stream not in other bodily fluids.
