Thanks sassy, no, I don't and it's not likely he will submit a sample.
The way I understand it, and I looking really hard for something to back this up, but it's the antigens that fluoresce under black light. I'll post if I find something. |

No, sadly I don't know his status. With his present mindset, I doubt seriously if I could talk him into testing.
Does anyone know what exactly fluoresces in saliva? I've shifted my focus away from the medical and more to the forensic and made a little head way. I found many pages that claimed saliva "usually" fluoresces under black light.
Since 80% of the population secretes...
I finally gave up since I have to leave for Portland in a few minutes. I decded to email a company that sells black lights to detectives and point blank ask them about it. |

We need more nonnies to try this. I think the bubbles actually helped doing it this way. Let's keep this thing going. |

I'm trying to talk Hubby into investing in a black light. I thought he had one already (from his poster days), but no. Thanks to whoever mentioned pet-supply stores. I knew about that use of black lights, but somehow it never occurred to me that pet-supply stores would actually sell the things!
Tigress -- Very curious to know what the detective-supply store says. (Maybe they sell the lights so you'll know whether your detective has peed on the carpet?)
We think Hubby's a secretor, so this should be interesting. (Though it would be one more case of secretor male & nonnie female -- sorry about that!)

Here's the reply from the detective store guy:

Thats a bit out of my realm of info. I can point you to forensic sources online that givbe info on florescent evidence. its http://www.redwop.com/technotes.aspGood luck, Tom PS, often times black, blue and uv lights are used with orange goggles to increase visibility. They show that on csi too.
I went to the site he referred me to and searched for secretor with no results. One of the big chain pet stores sells a "feline stink finder" for $15.99 if that helps. If I'm not mistaken, that is the very one I bought. I think they also had a smaller version with a bottle of phewey stinkey cat pee cover upper for less money. |

Well-I don't think this is a sure way of finding out secretor status. CSI program or not. Bought a few different types and still no results. Have even tried it on other people who are not family members (especially when I think we are all nonnies). Going the sure fire way with a secretor test for the hubby. I would be very surprised if he isn't one. Which will mean I have to order two more. Debra |

At least 50% of what they propose they can do/find out on the show(s) CSI is pure fiction. It's entertainment tv, not educational tv. |

hi all, I ran upstairs and got my old black light out after reading this thread. I think I am not a secretor, and I have a hunch that my mother does secrete. We took saliva samples (one each) and tested them,... sure enough her spit glowed. and yes I mean glowed, not just the bubbles but the liquid around the bubbles. My spit however, did not glow and looked absolutely clear... it was so cool seeing them next to each other, one gleaming proudly and the other clear as it was before the blacklight was turned on. so maybe there is something to this thing?... At any rate this is happy news for me as I have come to enjoy the food benefits of non-secretor B-dom. Especially bene fruits.... Long live berries. Hurrah We then checked my father out, and his spit glowed brightly too. I then rechecked mine on another surface, and still, it was a no-glow. i hope there is merit to this testing....and if not, no harm done. |

Hmmm, in your family's case, both of the Rh+ saliva samples glowed, and the Rh- sample did not. Do we have an alternative explanation? If it is the Rh factor, though, does the test work only for secretors? Or does everyone secrete their Rh factor? Wow, a whole new can of worms -- yum!

This is an interesting thread... I'm curious now about this, too. Would a black light bulb do the trick at testing this? Anyone else do an experiment with this? I'm looking forward to most posts. Best, Stefani |

To test for secretor status? The only way to truly know is to invest in the secretor test. Only way. |

I know a black light shows cat and dog urine stains. When we moved into our new house, all the carpets, and the first floor wood floor and walls were covered in that lovely glowing stuff. But it sure helped to see what needed to be cleaned better, and what needed Kilz to cover it up. |
