An additional method of variation is whether a person simply has more of less of the normal number of copies of a particular gene. Known as copy number variants (CNVs) these are segments of DNA in which differences in the number of copies of a particular gene (or other large sequence/region) have been found by comparison of two or more genomes. CNVs may vary for particular genetic regions due to a lower number (gene deletion) or a higher number (gene duplication).

When will the store start to offer such DNA testing ..or is there a Lab you recommend? so that families could possibly avoid overloads in genetic destiny.. as in a family where there are fragile or mental health 'issues' on both sides in the parents siblings and the 3rd generation children are autistic? might it have been possible to know the dangers in advance??
or would it make a difference to think about it- where families with cancers on both side of the family - known to exist way before pregnancy is contemplated?
Today a 'future mom to be' could plan for her offspring by eating right to prevent cancer in her own body and if possible in the next generation? would 6 month or a year of 'proper cancer prevention' eating right and using suplements be enough to make a difference? how long might make a difference? or is just awareness enough to ask for .. so that one would at least test for certain cancers rather then not even think of doing it? |

Could sprinkling a little kelp on a salad help boost fucosylation, improve memory or enhance nerve synapse adhesion? Who knows! But ruling out sensitivities to iodine and a need to restrict sodium (other nutrients that tend to be found in kelps) it might be a worthwhile experiment to try for a while. Human breast milk is the most fucosylated of all mammals (153 human milk oligosaccharides to a paltry 23 in our bovine breathren) so perhaps John D. Rockefeller, who reportedly hired a wet nurse in his old age to give him breast milk, was on to something after all. Turns out the old boob-snuggler lived to be 98.
the chinese tweeked their aging process with 2 maidens tucked in on each side to sleep with.. maybe lactating maidens might be better yet? a good laugh for me today.. |

I have a question about Bladderwrack.
Would Bladderwrack help a child who has been diagnosed with Dyslexia and ADD and has added support in his classroom via a "504 plan" is still not able to process information, focus or remember yesterday's lessons?
Would it be worth a try if it could only be used a few times each week?
I am in a situation where my husband's son is failing everything yet again despite in-school support and greater attention to his needs. I have my own opinion on how to help him outside of school but being that I have no control as I am not his parent, I am powerless to do much but watch. I've shared information with his mother but I was laughed at and sent away. His father is supportive of the information I share from this site but does not help in the dietary area because the child fights him every step of the way because at his "other house" all the avoid foods are allowed and encouraged.
I would just look away and let the chips fall where they may but I feel so bad for this good little boy. I have a hard time ignoring a young life being destroyed by ignorance. From a selfish perspective I don't want this child to be living in my basement until he is 40 because he can't function in the world on his own either.
Can I slip him a little Bladderwrack here and there or Brewer's Yeast and have any positive result? Is there any risk?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Oh and to add...he is O+ and 11 years old. He is a carboholic and a huge fan of sugary treats. I try very hard to guide him to better choices but as I said I have little to no support. |

Didn't know if it would help if not given daily. Didn't know if it was something that needed to be given regularly to see any result. I will try it. I brought copies of the articles Dr. D has written on the topic to the therapist that was seeing him last year as well as his mother. There was a lot of eye rolling going on. I lost respect for the doctor at that point and knew I had lost any chance to be heard by his mother. It seems the current way professionals handle these things is to focus "labels" and then walk away. I know my situation is very common. |

SoulfulLori, I would slip those nutrients in as much as you can. You definitely have a hard road ahead of you with this child. |

By age 11, you can try to teach the child directly about healthy eating. He may not have much control over his food choices at his mother's house or in school (if he gets school lunch) but at the very least, you can emphasize beneficial foods for him, even if he's not able to avoid the avoids. Try to get as much nutrition into him as you can when he's with you.
Fat soluble nutrients (such as fish oil) are stored in the body; it's equally effective to take a dose every day or 7X the dose once a week- so certainly supplements like that can be given a few times a week and still help him.

A question about fucose and seaweed:
Since fucose is found in human milk, does this mean that the human body can synthesise fucose, and we don't need a dietary source to have that in our bodies? Or is fucose only made in the breast, and not in any other body part? |

....genetic testing is still complex, expensive and beyond the reach of the consumer
the book and following the guidelines accordingly, running a swami if necessary, is more accurate and less expensive...... |

Yes, I will give it a go. Truly I'm coming to the conclusion that detatchment in this situation is the only way to handle it. I am not his mother and his mother just wants to classify him and have him "live up to labels". He is very smart but just in a different way. I'm thinking this is not my battle. Thanks KK! |

Hey there Ruthie! Yes, I agree and have been teaching him here and there. I try very hard to sneak in benes for him. It is just hard for a kid that is split between two houses during the week with two totally different views on life and health. I feed him only cereals with rice and push proteins in the morning and at his other house he is told that wheat and dairy are key and missing at my house. It confuses him so I have backed off because the differences were causing great upset. These posts actually have made me realize that it is not my battle and I'm sad for that but must move on. Thanks for the info on how certain supps work. That is very good to know and gives me a little hope that perhaps I can help a little without causing more upset for the boy. |

Didn't mean to hijack the thread.
I love Dr. D's blog. Ok, so I have to read it 2 or 3 times to really understand it but I find it facinating and love that he shares this info. The body is so very complex and tries so hard to sort itself out.
Thanks Dr. D for all that you do. |

Fucose is synthesized by the red blood cells as part of ABO blood group genetics and there is more of it on type O cells than any other blood type. Other than that, like you said it is also found in breast milk, so babies that are being breast fed are getting what they need. Fucose is particularly useful for O nonnies as a way to feed the good bacteria in their gut. The fucose would have to be available to the gut bacteria in a dietary form. |
