The thread about the article on sleep and diet was intriguing, because I have been talking to a friend about his issue with not being able to sleep through the night and I figured doing the BTD would help-- I thought I had remembered reading something here about improved sleep with the diets, including a few supplements. Since that thread didn't answer my query I decided to post something.
So has anyone here found that eating for blood type or genotype was helpful for improving length and quality of sleep? I do know that before BTD I would sleep 10 hours and not feel rested, but after BTD I could sleep fewer hours and feel much more rested...
He is currentyl sleeping 5 hours a night and seels that is not enough. |

Well, in my case, I was healing my adrenals, so I actually got less sleep. I was also taking lots of supplements. OTOH, when I woke up, I was really awake, like how you feel when you wake up from a minor earthquake. At three am.... So there may be some transition time, and each person can react differently. |
| My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant. Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index. DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer. |

Lola, when it comes to the BTD/GTD, I am not subtle! --- though I try. When one has had as much benefit as I have from eating this way, it is hard to not to preach!
Square Peg, this makes sense to me. I think I read once that it is a diagnostic point in Chinese medicine what time you wake up in the night. I can't remember now though which of the meridians 3 am corresponds to. |

That reminds me that Dr. D likes Blue Vervain for Blood Type O menopausal women for calming and tonifying the nervous system, and one of my favorite herbal books (Adaptogens for Strength, Stamina and Stress) also likes it for similar reasons, but when I try to take it at night it doesn't work so well for me-- anone else had expereince with it? I usually resort to Scullcap. |

In my case, when I eat out and as much as I try to avoid the avoids, that night I have a hard time falling asleep. When I eat according to my A-diet and now my Teacher diet, I have no problem sleeping. |

Thanks everyone for your input--Hoping to get some more responses to this so that my friend will have some real-life examples to think about-- I will be sharing the thread with him today, so keep your good words coming! Thanks BCgal-- I was thinking liver. I can't help but feel that this is related to(hormonal) metabolism somehow...

Blood sugar affects sleep as well as magnesium. I found that getting enough magnesium took care of the insomnia (waking up & not being able to get back to sleep). Being a mom for many years also affects sleep! |

I have not slept all night forever.. decades..
Recently I started to eat a spoon of extra light olive oil in place of a snack twice a day- one hour away from food on either end wash it down with a glass of warm water.. I seem to be sleeping for the first time in decades..
Worth a try.. |

When i am stressed and it has truly gotten me, i won't fall asleep until about 3am or will wake up at 3 am and not go back to sleep. Either way, i will feel it in the morning in some way compared to my regular sleep. Intersting! |

I used to wake up with horrible acid reflux. It scared me, and I started sleeping with my head and torso slightly elevated. Now, that never happens because I mostly avoid my avoids. I also avoid caffeine at night. Other than that, I've always been a sound sleeper. I love my sleep, hate to have it interrupted. |

Hi BCgal, what is organ clock and how is it affect sleep and wake?
I wake between 3 to 3:30 am. It is too early to get up so I stay in bed listening music till 5 am to fully wake. I was wondering why I wake at that time but I sleep enough hours. |

Hi, Cajun! It's good to see you too! I don't post every day because I don't have a lot of time for chatting (I can get drawn in for hours), but I want to check in from time to time. I have been struggling, falling on and off the wagon. Sugar is my main beastie. |

I think when we eat badly, this stresses our body, and the stress can activate stress hormones to give us the energy to fight it and this can keep us up. This is my interpretation from my body at least.
I tend to elevate rather than depress in stressed states, and this can make it hard to settle into sleep. Others may depress and sleep a lot and yet not feel rested. I am not like this. Often 5 hours of sleep will do me well for a few days, but then i need to catch up on it. I need like 7 for the best. |

My sleep is affected by extremes in my diet. Say if I try going strict low carb, or low calorie or giving up too many avoids all at once.. I'll have insomnia. I have to be gentle on my body or it reacts. I gave up wheat.. I think my body is used to that now. I'm going to try dairy. That's a tough one because it has addictive properties in it naturally.. to keep the calf from wandering away from the mother. It does the same to us. I was actually born allergic to cow dairy. I don't think I ever out grew it because I still get a stuffed up nose when I have it. |
