My saliva test was confirmed by my Lewis blood test - both results were non-secretor. In my humble opinion, I think folks should try to go directly for the Lewis blood test if at all possible. |

some LDN folks can be either secretor or non secretor in a saliva test |

I know, it's a bit confusing is it not? Dr. D'Adamo explains somewhere that the saliva test is more definitive. Now I'm still not convinced that I am a secretor as per the saliva test as I felt much better on the non-secretor diet that I followed before doing the saliva sample. Someone well versed in Dr. D'Adamo's work suggested that I may be a light secretor and so it showed up as secretor but because I don't secrete enough of the antigen in my digestive tract, that could be the reason I am having so much digestive problems on the secretor diet. And so according to them and my own intuition, I am going back to eating as a nonnie. Do what works! Ruthie thought that perhaps there could have been a bit of blood in the saliva sample. After one failed attempt at one lab, I think I found a lab that will do it via blood...they draw the blood and then send it out to a hospital for testing. It's taken much time and effort to get this information and set it up with back and forth with our doctor! No wonder people give up. But, I don't want to spend the money on another saliva test. Good luck....let us know more when you know more Isa. |

Hi Isa, both my partner and I tested as nonnies via the saliva test. After hearing stories here of people later typing differently via the Lewis blood test, we decided to be sure and get that done. You guessed it, we then both typed out as Secretors. It does happen!

At least some explorers have the LDN affinity, which can show up as positive on the saliva test. That LDN secretor positive is not any indication of a false reading - just a rare one. LDN's can be considered "super nonnies", so until you opt for something more specific, the non-secretor diet might be the best recommendation. |

Are LDN's Lewis Double Negatives? a-b-?
And do they need the saliva test per " and for which Lewis typing cannot be used to determine ABH secretor status. In these individuals determination via saliva is necessary. "

This is the usual procedure in the case of Lewis double negative, you determine secretor status by the results of a saliva test. Alternatively as noted above you consider them nonsecretors without testing. |

Thanks for the info Paul. I also came upon a thread : "how to tell secretor or non?"; in this thread Captain_Janeway mentions that there is also a Lewis Double positive that is considered a light secretor. I hope that this lab that will send the bloodwork to a hospital for testing gets it right. The last lab gave us our blood type which we already knew! |

The second lab that I phoned and was assured that they could do the test and it required them to send it to a hospital tried their best by calling their head office to do it once I arrived, they did not seem to know which vial to use. Finally after 20 minutes on the phone, they had me speak to head office. They told me they did not do it and was sorry that someone there said they did! Anyhow, unless one gets hospitalized and needs a blood transfusion, it appears that this test is not offered in Canada. And so, I did another saliva test and it came back as secretor, but I still seem to do better on the nonnie diet. It does not seem that I can find out if I am a Lewis Double Positive. SWAMI does not even have this listed as an option. Oh well! |

We don't have any of the tests available here in Australia, I have called everyone of the labs as per suggestions, either they have no idea or say they used to but no longer do the tests..... I had to send saliva tests to NAP, I worried about it being in transit but was assured it would be there in three days which was ok. All three of our samples came back as non-secretor. I was suspicious as our sons do not have any of the nonnie traits but i also read Dr D saying saliva tests are very reliable, so we all changed our swami. Some months later after being on the nonnie diet, I wanted to find out if I am an A1 or A2 so sent off a blood sample to the UK also in a three day express bag..... my results came back with "A1 NN secretor". Now we have to send blood samples of all the family, back to square one! Very disappointing. (But I do feel so much better & have dropped body fat percentage, so to me this confirms the blood sample) |

Not sure who the three were. But if both parents are nonsecretors all children are nonsecretors. |

I went back to 23 and me and looked under the non-ABO blood group category. It said "there are more than 25 different blood groups that go into your particular type". 23 and me reports on Diago, Kell, and Kid, and gives a detailed explanation of each. I tested a-b+ on all three, so I'm temporarily assuming that I'm Lewis a-b+ until I can find out more info. When I did the first blood test from Dr. D, it said A negative. So I had blood drawn at a lab and it said A positive, secretor. It didn't show the Lewis. So I did another blood test from Dr. D. It said A positive. Best two out of three = A positive. And, assuming the blood test is right from the lab and also from 23 and me, secretor. I still don't know my Lewis, though. |

I sent saliva samples from my husband, my youngest son & myself. (eldest son is not at home now). I knew if either my husband or myself came back as secretor I would have to test my son. |
