I couldn't find this topic with a search... sorry if it has been covered elsewhere...

I just received my secretor test kit and was reading the directions, and didn't find mention of what to do/expect if you have braces on your teeth... but for some reason I think I may have seen something about this somewhere, but can't remember where...

Can having braces on your teeth cause you to have a false positive for secretor status? I guess maybe due to the possibility that abrasions on the inside of the mouth can allow some blood into the saliva sample...

Anyone have suggestions for how to minimize this? Or should I just pursue secretor status results by some other means?

It shouldn't make a difference unless the brackets are cutting into your mouth.  If you follow the diections, the results should be clean.

It really varies... sometimes I have abrasions and other times seems fairly smooth. To be on the safe side, I'll probably use a lot of wax on the days just prior to collecting the sample...

I am curious if anyone has tested secretor with the saliva test and then found out later by some other means to be a nonnie...

My first saliva test said secretor.  Later, my Lewis(blood) test said nonnie.  I did a second saliva test and made sure I followed the directions to the letter and it showed nonnie.

To be sure I would do a Lewis test in adition to the saliva test.

Yes, it helps! I will be sure to follow the directions VERY carefully in hopes of getting an accurate result. But I guess I won't know 'for sure' unless I do the Lewis test. Unless the saliva test comes out nonnie. Don't see how that could happen if it isn't true... unless the sample isn't big enough or something...

Is it usually possible to get a regular family practice physician to order a Lewis typing? Should I go in with info on why I want it? or maybe where it could be done if they would agree to take/send the sample? Not sure how to approach it...

Your family doctor may not do the test, he or she should be able to direct you to the appropriate place to go.  Insurance may or may not pay for it.
