There is a lot of good info about this online; cayenne pepper is a neutral for Os but has some insulin management properties and should be considered as something to either take as a supplement or use daily in cooking or as a tea.

Cayenne and other red chili peppers have been shown to reduce blood cholesterol, triglyceride levels, and platelet aggregation, while increasing the body's ability to dissolve fibrin, a substance integral to the formation of blood clots. Cultures where hot peppers like cayenne are used liberally have a much lower rate of heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism.

Eating cayenne pepper may also be helpful for weight maintenance and decreasing insulin resistance (in prediabetes and diabetes). Regular dietary intake of cayenne pepper significantly reduced insulin in a clinical trial. In this study, participants who consumed 30 g per day of chili, composed of 55 percent cayenne pepper, showed lower insulin levels after four weeks, compared to those who did not eat this diet. Clinical trials indicate that metabolism increases while appetite and caloric intake are declines in people who add cayenne to their diets.

Cayenne is the key ingredient in something called The Master Cleanse, a drink you can use to cleanse your body and burn fat.  You can substitute stevia for the maple syrup and drink this daily.  I have added cayenne pepper back to my daily diet and think it has a lot of benefits.  I wonder why it's not considered a beneficial.

I buy cayenne pepper from a health food store (40,000Heat Units)(they also have 80,000)  This helped me so much to get rid of phlegm from COPD, ( my whole right lung is closed up and part of my left)  I have been off oxygen use over two years, COPD.

I use 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon daily, on foods, in beverages and years ago I did the
master cleanse (being a diabetic) was advised to use black strap molasses, I lost 17 lbs in 12 days, I didn't want to start eating again, but did.  It was my first time.
Have done it since a few days at a time, they actually showed how to reduce insulin, in conjunction with the cleanse, it worked well.

Also noticed my hair started turning brown again while using, and my breast firmed up. A nice pert!

Cayenne pepper is awesome. It helps to regulate both high and low blood pressure. As well as using powder I use it in a tincture form. Years ago I worked with a woman at a restaurant and she use to liberally sprinkle cayenne in the lasagna trays and leave it sit for a while. It softened up the dried up cheese and made clean up easier. So...I can see how it would clear up your lungs. If we have a sore throat we gargle with lemon, water and cayenne. My sons due it as well. It clears the phlegm and disinfects. Check out Dr. John Christopher, the famous herbalist who has great stories about the use of cayenne.

Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

OMG, is "Pepper, Red Flakes" the same as cayenne pepper? I didn't realize that. On my SWAMI, it is a black dot, whereas "Peppers, Chili, Jalapeno" is a diamond. Why is cayenne pepper the same as red flakes? I have been using cayenne pepper in my diet every single day to replace black pepper, which is an avoid. I thought it was good for me for all the reasons listed above. Do I have to give it up? I can't stand not having pepper in my diet! Jalapeno is not available here; whereas we have small Thai chilis--would that be OK?

According to some of the cooking sites I went to, cayenne and red pepper are the same thing.  

I don't know about other varieties of hot peppers, other than those listed.  A friend of mine just gave me a bunch of different hot peppers...wonder if they're OK.  Not sure which are jalapeno!

I put cayenne on my garlic greens for breakfast. It's the only nightshade I can eat that doesn't cause problems. It tastes great, along with all the benefits mentioned. If it would perk up my tatas I'd be absolutely thrilled, geminisue. That's a great side bennie!

Cayenne (powder) and the red flakes are both dried...  Is it possible that they are susceptible to mold as they dry?

What's interesting though is that I (also Hunter per Swami) get red pepper flakes *and* chili/jalapenos as superfoods.  So my guess is it's not a mold issue.   Ah, the plot thickens......

Another interesting tidbit is that the chilis/jalapenos are listed under "live foods".  Portion size 1 cup!

What a wonderfully written blog, San J. I had no idea that peppers don't originate from the East! After reading your blog, I understand why I can stomach the hot spice so well (besides the fact that I was well-trained in it since childhood) but not my Type A husband

belle- thai chillies are very much like cayennes. i have grown both and can tell very little differance if i can tell at all. jalapenos are a whole nother story.

Cayenne Pepper: Named for the city of Cayenne in French Guiana.  The is a member of the Capsicum genus and is in the nightshade family.

Cayenne pepper is high in vitamin A. and contains vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium and manganese.

Capsicum or capsaicim: appears as paprika, chili pepper, red pepper, cayenne pepper, red or green bell pepper, sweet pepper, jalapenos, as many as 27 species. Only the bell pepper is not hot since the capsaicin gene is recessive.

Resurrecting this thread as I have just rediscovered chilies!! Wondering why it is that in type base jalepeno chilies are mentioned specifically & then also just chili powder (with no particular specifications)

Anyone heard of whether other types of chilies are ok - habenaro peppers, scotch bonnet, birdseye & where they might fit within the recommendations?! Thank you...

Still wondering re those other types of chilies & whether it is just the jalapenos that are the only ones that are beneficial

I'm not so sure this Birdseye chili powder I bought is as good...(that's a type not a brand btw) Or maybe it's because I haven't taken any minerals lately, but I don't think it is doing what the chili sauce was that I discovered - that was Scotch Bonnet & Habenero chillies...I seem to be reacting again which is annoying... Maybe I better take some more minerals??!!

In my Swami, it only has Chili, Jalapeno listed as a Diamond.  Although, under spices it does list Chili Powder (unspecified in origin) as a Neutral... so....

Sorry about miss understanding B. it was the black strap molasses during master cleans that firmed the breast and darkened the hair.  I think it has to be taken daily several x a day to work.  No longer has that effect.Dang!

My understanding is that all kinds of hot peppers share the same rating. Of course, individual bodies may react differently to specific varities of pepper.

Bad reactions to a dried spice may be due to other ingredients  besides the pepper itself. There might be corn starch added, or an avoid spice such as black pepper if it's a spice mixture.

Thanks for your thoughts ruthie!! I do appreciate them Hard to tell re the birdseye chili powder as I did have it with duck livers (a probable avoid) which was quite possibly not a good idea, so not a conclusive test... As far as I know the chili powder itself is just straight chili...They usually list if anything else added but will check... Cheers

Hi you all! I have restarted the O type diet after about 5 years. Two weeks in and I am already noticing the difference,however I will have loads of questions as my book was a 2000 edition and some of the discussions on the FB forums has thrown some of the knowledge on it out of the window. So bear with me for the next couple of weeks. I have learned about  the SWAMI, THE GENOTYPE, does it mean that the original ERFYT Concept is not longer accurate? By the way I've gained weight in the last 2 years, due to huge amounts of stress and almost lacking food, and where I gained it, I discovered I am on O negative Secretor. Any suggestions for Breakfast? I have puffed rice not so often, but with Lactose FREE milk as I cannot tolerate any legume/nut  derivate milk, rivytas with low sugar marmalade, Figs, prunes. Since adding kelp as a supplement I AM HUNGRY all the time!!! So I am taking this as a good sign that metabolism is speeding up.  Any feedback welcome.

The original ER4YT book is still valid- it's just as good as it was 12 years ago and worlds better than any of the "one size fits all" diets out there.  That hasn't changed.

Since that time Dr D'Adamo has kept on researching and he's refined the diets (with the publishing of books targeted towards various specific health issues). Then he developed a new system of "figuring out who should eat what" called the Genotype Diet, which factors in blood type, but also many other factors, so the end result (what your food list looks like) is different. Then he went on to write SWAMI software, which computes a diet for each individual, combining BTD and GTD and your own personal medical history.

You can go ahead and use the same BTD you followed in the past, and you'll likely get the same results. If you want to invest in a personalized SWAMI, you can improve your health even further. Plus, most people find the SWAMI diets less restrictive than BTD. Instead of avoid all foods that most O nonnies can't eat, I only have to avoid the ones that are detrimental to me personally. It's an improvement over BTD, which is already a great system.

I would suggest going with BTD for now, and then re-evaluating in a month or two. Maybe you'll be feeling great by then and see no reason to change things. Or maybe you'll find yourself greatly improved, but with a few stubborn health issues that you hope SWAMI might help you clear up. Or maybe you're doing well on BTD, but really miss eating cheese, and you want SWAMI to get a broader range of foods to eat. But you don't need to decide that right away.

Another O- Secretor here.  I often have eggs (usually an omelette with fish or other meat protein for breakfast), or a smoothie with frozen fruit, pineapple juice, nuts (walnuts/almonds/pecans/pumpkin seeds etc), flax meal etc for breakfast - both really hold me over well.  I find that grains don't really work so well for me as a staple for breakfast often - sometimes I'll have quinoa 'porridge' or oat  porridge for breakfast, but not very often as I find I'm really full for about an hour and then really ravenous for about 3 hours after.

Hmmm I know it happens (& am guilty of hijacking as much, if not more, than some others so am NOT pointing the finger) but I am wondering (since this was originally a thread on "Cayenne Pepper for O's" which muted to a Chili discussion)... how is Atlantis going to find this discussion on breakfasts fro O's later on??!!
Should it be moved (I mean the parts on breakfasts?) Mods?

Mmmmm... Quite right Poss! Back on topic then.

I add a dash of cayenne pepper to my morning smoothie. It's a diamond on both our Swami's and I think it really helps keep morning mucous (historically an issue) at bay. I think it's also a metabolic enhancer.
