Hello,

I have just come across 'The Body Ecology Diet' that seems to help a great deal in candida type problems http://bodyecology.com Some of the testimonials are very impressive indeed.

Has anyone had any experience of this diet or is the BTD/Genotype diet better? I did the Body Ecology test and it said that for me, "Yeast-connected health problems are almost certainly present." I like it because it is focused specifically on candida, whereas there doesn't seem to be a BTD/Genotype diet targeting candida specifically (e.g., in the series of books about Arthritis, Menopause, etc).

Ruby, you  can look a the protocols for yeast candida.

  I am not sure how to explain this but the O diet is all designed to treat candida. O's suffer from candida, particularly O non secretor women.

Dr. D'Adamo has designed his diet around these issues.


I am not familiar with the BE diet so I can not speak about it.

Ok, thank you, I hadn't realised that, Andrea. And yeah, you're right, I just had another look and agree with your impression that it's a lot of products and a one size fits all approach. In addition, I found that I cannot order the products outside of the US, so it looks like a non-starter for me anyway  

Lola, thanks a lot for the links - wow, I hadn't realised there was so much to learn about this way of eating! I hadn't seen that part of the website before. I have signed up for the newsletter  

I hope my Swami kit arrives tomorrow, so I'll be able to calculate a more personalised diet.

I agree with Andrea - the entire O diet is designed to tackle O-type problems, one of them being candida.  The basic "anti-candida diet" is essentially the O diet.  If there are specific things from BE that you think would benefit you, you can always combine those with BTD as long as it allows you to remain compliant with BTD.  There are some people who combine different health strategies; some O's combine BTD and paleo, for example.


There is a good in every bad

Hmm, I think I would be best to stick with one thing only for now. I still haven't quite got my head around doing this D'Adamo diet - I am waiting for my Swami and then I plan to follow that, but not mix it with other approaches. I think that it might be best to do that for a while at least, and then hopefully some health issues will resolve and if there are any left I can decide if I want to combine the diet with any additional things, such as BE or whatever. But I hope that my Swami diet will be all I need!  

I really do want to feel well and have energy and feel young again ...

I'm an A and have candida problems at times when eating too many "fast and cheap" fuels like breads, whole grains, and the like.  They make me feel tired and the energy is cheap and doesn't have endurance.  

I feel a sourness after eating stuff like this and get thrush on my tongue.  Eating solid and long burning fuels like different meats, fruits, and veggies while minimizing most whole grains and fast burning fuels appears to help me greatly.

I use a "paleo" version of the explorer diet, with mostly rice as the main carb i use based on grains, and this minimizes the thrushing, the sourness, and gives me energy that lasts more than 10 minutes without a crash.

Perhaps this is because my momma is a tried and true hunter i am wired this way.

I've used a number of ideas from Body Ecology that have helped me a lot.  They do quote the Blood type diet and while they may not agree totally with everything in the Blood type diet they recommend following most of it.  Depending on your energy you might find some of their ideas useful.  They have a web site that you can get lots of tips from too.

I said that because i ate a bunch of cereals and ate less fresh foods and meats the past few days and my energy levels were lower until i started moving and exercising in the afternoons, like i would sit down and feel like going to sleep!  I'm gonna check it out sounds interesting.  

Rice and oats are good.  The book even has a few varieties of wheat that are superfoods for explorers.  I keep it varied though if i can.  I had chocolate frosted mini wheats and that is what really did it!  I'm more used to eating the right stuff so i can feel it when i eat bad stuff now!!

Oh gosh, lots of replies - sorry I've been away for a while and haven't responded sooner.

@Andrea AWsec and Lola - thanks very much for the hint on Tom Greenfield. I'm actually very tempted to make an appt. He's a long way from me, but manageable on the train. I sometimes find things easier to do when I'm 'told' by someone else what to do, and I have a sense of not wanting to let them down. I know that's a bit silly and I should be able to discipline myself, but well, I'm far from perfect!  

@AKArtlover - thanks very much for the links, helpful, informative stuff there!  

@Sahara - hmm, I didn't much like the thought of kefir anyway - yeuch!  

@Easy E - yes, 'fast and cheap fuels' certainly need to be avoided to keep tiredness candida at bay! However, even though I know this, I still find it difficult to change my eating.

@Lin - I have found some of the stuff on their website interesting too. I've given it a lot of thought though and I think I probably need to do one thing or the other and at the moment I am more convinced by the BTD and GTD. Less sure about GTD as I haven't really done it properly, because of uncertainty about which one I am.

Dr Greenfield would probably run a SWAMI as part of an office visit. That's even more personalized than GTD, and you don't need to worry  about "not figuring it out correctly" when you have a professsional do the measurements, interpret your fingerprints, etc.

If you are going to go see him, I'd suggest following BTD until then, to keep things simpler.

Ruby, I had a look at the BE site today, which linked my fungal problem with my achlorhydria - I think a lot of secretors may have this sort of problem, not necessarily food related (i believe) - although they did suggest (for me) to include more ''fermented foods) which i can't really have due to swami.

Try fermented  vegetables instead. Here's a great website that explains all about fermenting veggies. He gives a few specific recipes, but the techniques can be used on any vegetables that are good on your SWAMI.

You can use "wild bacteria" like Sandor Katz reccomends, or use a capsule of Polyflora as a starter. But there's no need to consume dairy to get your probiotics from food.

I took his book out of the library, at the same time as a  bunch of other books on similar subjects. If I was going to spend the money on one book about fermenting, I would buy Wild Fermentation. however, reading it once  (along with lots of online discussions about fermenting) was enough for me to feel comfortable with my homemade ferments. I don't feel the need to use any books at all at this point.

I'd suggest getting the book out of your local library and checking it out for yourself. Then you can decide if it's worth owning, or if reading through it once (or however many times you want to read it while you have it out) is enough for you to have the same kind of confidence in your ferments.

Sandor Katz (author of "Wild Fermentation") also has a good video on how to ferment cabbage (though you can use any vegetable in its place) on YouTube.com. Just do a search on that site.

I wish i could check it out of my library, i already tried it but they don't carry it.  I've even tried going to book stores just to look at it to see if it's worth buying, but can't seem to locate a physical copy anywhere.

When i get the money i'll probably take the plunge (though i may try to get a used copy) and buy it.

Can you request it through inter-library loan? My local library is part of my county's library system. There are a whole lot of books that they don't have in my library itself (I can't walk in there and find it on the shelf) but I can request it online (or in person, but I find online easier) and they'll send it from anotehr library in the county and I can pick it up at my library.

It still can't hurt to talk to a librarian. They might still be able to borrow the book from a neighboring county, but it's a slightly more involved process and takes longer. You can also request that the library purchase the book. If they get enough requests for the same title, it goes on their shopping list.

I think Donna is a wise woman and has a lot of good things to say.  AND, she devotes a lot of time to blood type variation in her book.  Her book helped me quite a bit and I have used some of her techniques and wisdom.  I think cutting out sugary fruits for a time helped me.  But I don't think it's something you should do long term.  I think Donna's diet could make you skinny real fast, because it's very strict.  But I think there is some wisdom about the body, healing, etc etc that can be incorporated in life.  

I think Dr. D's plan is very very good. It's all good info.  It is also my opinion that no one person can be right about everything.  So......  you have to learn to follow the things you know that work for you.  This is probably the best place to start learning though if you want to overcome some ailments or whatever.  Meaning Dr.D's books.

I've contemplated Body Ecology for about 15 years and frankly, it's just too OTT complicated, just my O opinion.  My bowels are perfectly fine despite occasional use of alcohol etc; my system seems to roll along just fine.  She did introduce kefir & the fermented veggies, I'll give her that.  15 years later I'm still not gonna ferment my own vegetables.  Kefir is neutral for Hunter, I indulge in one container a week or so.  Frankly what's helped me the most in years is my big nightly feast.  Just eating a huge meal at night cycles with raw fruits and veggies during the  day has improved my digestion/bowels 150%.  That and tons of exercise.   I've been using whey protein powder, an avoid.  Maybe that has helped as well.
