How does being a non-secretor affect your breastmilk and your baby?  Does your baby need your bt antigens?  DH asked me this a couple of days ago and it got me thinking.

yes thats an interesting one.. do secretors grow bigger breast fed babies, personally little Ruby my daughter  was on the lower end of the weight percentile as she grew, but i don't know if i can put that down to secretor status or just the way she was.  as shes never been a HUGE eater like some kids i know.

My three kids were all on their own growth curves. DD1 was always short and skinny. DD2 was always super-short (barely on the height graph at all) and around the 15% for weight (making her a rather pudgy baby and toddler.) DS has always been about 50% in both height and weight, which seems incredibly tall compared to other family members.

All of them got the same breastmilk. I had more than ample amounts of milk even though my diet was full of avoids at the time (I made sure to have plenty of "healthy" whole wheat and full fat dairy products when I was nursing.)

I made a 9 pound 11 ounce baby and at 6 months he is over 20 pounds already. He is long and tall but had good strong dense muscles. He is a jolly jumper fanatic as an O type. He's not fat and the only chub he has on him is on his upper thighs.

He is still being breastfeed. I have lots of milk. I could probably feed 4 babies easy with how much my body makes. lol

O positive baby boy.

But I just wonder how the lack of antigens affects them, if at all.  I wonder if they actually have less trouble because they don't have to work around antigens that might be problematic?

if a nonnie can create such perfection......
we can just as well nurture our babies, no?
eating avoids has given our babies colics.....
so I imagine a balanced nonnie, has no problem breast feeding the baby

Thanks Lola!

And I find that when I eat certain things that don't work with his bt even when I am 100% compliant it give him really bad gas and he spits up more.

Odd side note... I have started chewing food for him sometimes and giving that to him. When my mom an AB secretor and was about to... I jumped up... "DON'T DO IT!" lol My saliva is ok for his bt. haha Or atleast that's the way I see it.

are you following the baby book as well, for advice about the worst avoids when breast feeding and those chameleon foods?

I think babies don't develop the immunological type specific response for awhile. Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure I came across this a bit ago.

So they don't interact with the world the same way. I wonder if by design that is so they can take what is available to them food wise.

Ladies, are you sure that the blood type antigens are missing from breast milk of non secretors?

I think you are right, I too came across it and I'm not sure where, maybe "Eat Right for your Baby".

I'm assuming.  If it's missing from our other bodily fluids, why wouldn't it be missing from breast milk?

Check this out - including the table:

http://www.dadamo.com/science_abh-lewis.htm

Breast Milk Components

Significant variations in the carbohydrate residues in human breast milk are found depending on the mothers ABO, Lewis, and Secretor blood types. During the first week of lactation the ability to produce neuraminyloligosaccharides is linked to the ABH secretor groups. And the ability to produce oligosaccharides with Le (a) or Le (b) characteristics is linked to Lewis and Secretor systems. The consequences of this are that secretors will produce higher levels of N-acetylneuraminic acid and lower levels of galactose in their breast milk than non-secretors. In the ABH secretor groups, blood type A and O secretors also have higher N-acetylglucosamine contents than B and AB secretors (p less than 0.001), while the A and B secretors have higher galactose levels. The Lewis secretor groups are also distinguished by a significantly higher level of fucose. The ABH (+), Le (a-b-) group had higher lactose contents than the other groups. (2
