I had bought some unfinished wood cabinets a few months ago to add to my office.  We kept them in the open garage for about three months, to let them out-gas.

We brought them into my office a couple of months ago.  The odor wasn't all that strong, but strong enough that I didn't want them right behind me, as I could smell them.  So, they were placed about 5' from me.  When I stood at the cabinets, I could still smell them.

Last Monday, I woke up feeling really ill.  Achy, tired, totally wiped out.  Very low energy.  I felt this way all week, and never could recover.

I discovered that whenever I came into the office, I would feel even more tired and the odor seemed to be getting stronger and less tolerable for me.  I had been feeling really moody in the room and I couldn't wait to get out of there.  So, I took my work out to the kitchen on my laptop and felt like a different person!

Each time I went back into the office, I felt weak and by now, my chest was becoming congested.

I decided that the cabinets had been making me ill, and also possibly explained the fact that I never returned to the robust energy that I had experienced earlier on the BTD.  I kept wondering why I was not feeling on top of the world, when I had been compliant.

So, I wanted to share this with you all, so as to alert my community to be on the lookout for indoor air pollution which is a huge contributor to our health.

I have done some research and found a product to be a possible remedy for particle board and plywood, which both use formaldehyde.  It's a sealer that seals the processed wood product with the glues from out-gassing.  I've read that it can out-gas for many many years!

I plan to buy some and try it.

You mentioned they were unfinished wood.  Did you paint the cabinets before you put them in the office?

There are paints out there now that they say have no chemical fumes, safe enough for a baby's room.

about 10 years ago I had a passel of teens coming to live with me and so I needed a house and got one with the floors all stripped sanded and freshly varnished..  I figured right , that we could move in and if some cleanup needed to be done I could do it as the kids where in school.  within 4 days of moving in I felt my regular 'cold' coming on and I never recovered.. It was a September that had needed some heat as it was really cold early..  I could neither shake my cold nor did I get feeling better.

NOW taking on the kids was one thing but I was crushed, the strain and stress seemed overwhelming.  I totally understood that these kids indeed had never lived in a house organized like mine, and shopping and cooking and laundry became a chore..  I had no issue with the work, but I felt totally exhausted more and more weak and tired.  I suffered greatly and went to the doctor a few times until I was testing nearly as poorly as a person with HIV.. a case of deteriorating bad health numbers....... It was the middle of the month of December when we discussed my being hospitalized for further tests.  I was to the point where keeping house was a drag on my strength and I nearly begged not needing to breath please..

Finally I was in the doctors office again and was beyond understanding of why I would find it so hard to keep up with kids.. There where many extra stressors with that, as they where high maintenance kids and I wanted to do right, but I just never believed that my age 55 then was supposed to make me feel like I was dyeing in front of my self.  SO: I was in the doctors office and as we always did we talked about a few things other then the kids,,,, when I suddenly REMEBERED that I was having recurring 'colds' from allergies to OAKS!  As soon as I mentioned this to my doctor and told him that: NO WONDER.. I was living in a house with oak dust everywhere in all sort of nocks and crannies... and IN THE HEATING baseboards.

I decided right there and then that I would have the house cleaned out from top to bottom and most of all have the heater units blown out from bottom to top and sucked the OAK wood sawdust into a strong vacuum...

I did just that, with 5 people scrubbing the house to it's last inch, while I was wearing a mask.. BUT we did not move the filing cabinets in the office that had carpeting in it.  BUT we did scrub everything around them as far as we could//.. Even now I till never like going into that room ever since.. 12 years later I can be in the room, but still only go in and out. I never stay there even when the windows are open.

I did get better feeling in about a year, but it was a miserable time, especially as I could not feel as healthy as I wished to be for the kids.doing BTD saved me and them... Well the teens now grown out of college survived me and I survived them and the house and all are are ok today .. BUT I will not forget how bad I got from a allergy to OAKS.  (I loved it when I moved to Thousand Oaks near LA- years ago. ..  Karma!)

If I had to do it again.. or if I was you.. out with the new and back in with the old.. Years later I still can feel the differences in the office and all that is in there are a few cabinet's that are against the wall... I wish we had moved them.. still do..

BUT I AM GRATEFUL for at least having figured out what was making me deadly ill in the nick of time.

just my story..

I remember when we got our new stove we were told to let it run an hour or two. Well whoever installed it didn't talk out some insilation (I don't know what it was) and made me and my husband very sick. We had the company came out and check out the stove and that was the problem. You would've thought they wouldn't try to kill us...

I worked for a company that moved into a newly renovated office and had to deal with "sick building syndrome" as well as growing sensitivities to perfumes, and office / industrial chemical fumes - printer toner, varnish, etc...  It can be very debilitating.

Gosh, these stories are fascinating to me!  I like to buy old things too.  I've never had a problem with unfinished wood, though.  We bought some bookcases from an unfinished wood store and painted them.  I never felt ill from them.  Also, we bought a pale wood dresser from the same place for a guest room.  I suppose there's a clear finish on that.  I like the smell of unfinished wood.  I have heard of formaldehyde in plywood.  People are much more aware now of building materials in their homes.  I don't think I'm all that sensitive.  Who knows what I inhaled/ingested as a child.  We didn't know about all this stuff.  I'm just lucky I wasn't a thalydamide baby!  My mother was almost prescribed that.     Sometimes newly painted rooms have made me feel ill.  I just stay out of them until they are dry and keep the windows open.  My problem seems to be wall to wall carpeting.  I don't know if it is dust, or mold under the carpeting after they've been steam cleaned, but carpeting in public places - specifically libraries for some reason - makes me cough and hack and get congested after I've been there five minutes or so.  The 2nd floor of our house is carpeted, but it's new and we haven't had it cleaned yet.  I prefer hard floors throughout the house.  We have area rugs, though.  You know, I  don't like curtains.  I like blinds and shutters because you can just wipe them down.

Nope!  Had not painted them.

The unfinished wood cabinets had particle board components.  The sides and back were all particle board.  So, it's not the wood but the glues in the particle board that were making me ill.

Most cabinets today, even the finished ones, are made up partially of particle board.  The worst part about this, is that formaldehyde is supposedly odorless, so you can't even tell if you're being poisoned.  However, I did smell some strong fumes from the other chemicals in the glues.

I am looking into buying some glass computer tables and shelves, as I've noticed since this incident, that my office is made up of 80% of laminated particle board products.

Thank you!  I feel sooooooo much better today!  Unbelievable!!  I had been racking my brain trying to figure out what I had / hadn't done re the BTD, as I was going downhill here lately!  I thought that I was detoxing again, but I just kept feeling bad continually for a week and it seemed that it was not letting up!

Now, I feel like I'm on an uphill swing toward getting back to feeling great again!

Goldie, your symptoms sound so close to mine.  Just feeling like I couldn't do anything!  I lost a whole week's worth of work!!  But, thank God, I discovered this before my health got out of hand!

Oak allergies?  BTW, these cabinets were unfinished oak.  I didn't know that people could be allergic to oak.  I did notice that my symptoms got worse after my husband drilled holes in the oak to install the pulls......hmmmm...

Maybe they are not solid Oak? ???  I think it was the formaldehyde, the out gassing and the glues.  We experienced a similar situation with our custom made mattress, that needed two pieces glued together.  My husband could smell the glue.

whatever it is you will be able to deal with it once you can figure out what is causing the issues.. if its dust wash it down.. with me it was so severe because the heaters kept cooking the saw dust.. I killed 2 hair blowers cleaning up the heaters.. best kill ever.. ha-ah

my allergy was detected when I got a 'cold' always about the same time.. like Sept.. and then ended up in Doc's office for meds in Oct.

It really helps to figure it out : as I did to find out that cyclical I feel somewhat depressed on empty moon and stimulated (great) on full moon for each of 2 days..

get a good vacuum into the cabinettes keep the windows open while doing it.. vacuum as if your life depended on it.. no more holes.. or at least not without thorough cleaning after..

as for early childhood.. they did not have the chemicals they use now.. we had asbestos instead.. mom got lung cancer -wonder why- we used to sweep the asbestos 4x4 plate on the floor..

good luck fixing the issue.. glass actually sounds like a great idea..

The fronts were oak.  The rest were particle board.

Goldie, the cabinets are outta here!  They were removed last night and they will not return.  I've decided to let my DH use them in his tool shed, as he doesn't spend much time in there.

I'm looking for glass and metal now, or some really old solid wood furniture.

I had been noticing that I felt tired on the days after I exercised.  I think it must have been due to the fact that the toxins from the particles borad were getting stirred up and was being dumped into my blood stream.

It's amazing what toxins can do!  I had been struggling emotionally lately, without cause.  Now, since the offending objects are out of the house, my mood is up again and I'm feeling more and more energy in my body by the moment!

It's scary what kinds of chemicals lurk in everything these days.

This past summer, I researched buying a new desk for DD1, since the one she was using (about 60 years old and solid wood) was falling apart. The unit itself was sturdy, but the legs weren't attached properly and the whole thing was unstable and unsafe.

After seeing what IKEA, TArget, and Staples had to offer, I decided it was worth the effort to repair her old desk. Even IKEA, which is the least-toxic of the available brands (especially in the lower cost segment of the marketplace) didn't have a single desk without particleboard or plastic. I did well there with a metal bunkbed and  nontoxic mattresses last year, but struck out on nontoxic desks.

So, we fixed the old desk. I bought some new screws, nuts, and bolts, and we also had to glue some parts where the wood itself was split. I was a little nervous about the chemicals in wood glue, but it was still a safer choice than the poisons in a new desk.

You can have allergy (abnormal sensitivity) to any substance (and emotions).  I can't count the number of food, environmental and chemical sensitivities I have dealt with!  You can even have allergies to combinations of things and emotions...

Yes, Goldie!  Thanks for taking the time!

I was not enjoying the benefits of the BTD while these cabinets were in the house!

I am feeling even better than earlier today!!  The spring is back in my step and I am able to move around more quickly and energetically.  It's amazing to think that offending substances can be so debilitating!!

I'm fine with almonds.  I think it was the glues in the particle board, because even carpet glues make me feel ill.

The glues are pretty wicked...  I had problems with carpet glues and particle board as well...

You seemed to question the ability to have an allergy to emotions...
I can only say that we don't know what we don't know until we either hear/read about it or experience it...  It struck me like kind of weird until I experienced it...
