I can't have dairy and needed some milk yesterday so I decided to try Rice Dream because I'd heard great things about it. I used the shelf stable one because it was the only kind available to me and I ended up feeling horribly sick not long after having it. I noticed later that it had safflower/sunflower oil in it which are both avoids for me...is it possible for me to have gotten sick so fast from the milk? |

If very sesitive - yes but it could have been a bug I have often had Rice dream if I made something for my daughter and never had any bad effect from it.
Why can´t you do dairy ?
I would use homemade almond milk if I wanted to subsitute real milk. Ricemilk IMO is just carb-juice |

sprouting any grain renders it sweet..... home made manna tastes like honey. with malt, made of barley, it s the same thing.....so I believe you can make malt out of any compliant grain actually, by sprouting, dehydrating, grinding into a fine powder and adding it to either baked goods or smoothies or whatever suits your fancy. faux milk in this case |

the safflower/sunflower dose it to me too. i tried the terro brand terro chips (I usuly get them from nutsonline) and i ate a couple of hand fulls and within twenty minutes i wanted to throw up. lesson learned stick to my "nuts". i have tried every sub for milk out there and can only say it is a good thing i don't actuly drink milk. i hate them all. too watery, no taste, the wrong kind of taste, fortunatly dairy only makes extra mucus for me and i don't use it often so i will get goat milk from a local milker of goats and make alot of spelt bread for my freezer with most of the gallon. |

Ok thanks for the information everyone. I have allergies to dairy so that's why I was using rice milk. I only use milk when I need it for baking which is rarely since I have celiac disease I pretty much never bake. That was exactly how I felt battle dwarf, I was nauseous pretty quickly so I knew it wasn't a gluten contamination because that takes quite awhile. I think I'll try almond milk next time. |

my mom is trying to find the dimond brand almond milk. it is saposed to be good but i will have to check the store in the bigger city when i go monday. they don't have it locally...the place that sells certafied angus is catering to some aspects of gluton avoidance, i wonder if he would get the dimond bran if asked. he is locally owned and seems to be easier to work with than wally's world. |

Oops!! I somehow missed the oils in the Rice Dream that I'd recently bought! That may be one of the reasons why my energy has been going down, although I only used it to make rice pancakes.
I noticed the energy drain to a greater degree when I had bought the Terra Chips in the second month of my BTD, in a desperate fling for crunchy snacks!! |

I think I remember the Diamond brand to have carageenan in it. |

Ahhhhhh it was definitely the milk!!! I'm up late studying for finals and decided to test my milk theory to see if it really was the safflower/sunflower/canola oils that made me sick. Well... within 15 minutes I was nauseous and a had horrible stomachache and wanted to curl up and die. Definitely going to be avoiding these at ALL costs now! |

Carrageenan might also be the cause and other additives |

Carrageenan isn't listed as an ingredient...wouldn't it have to be listed if it was in it? |

It is easy to make you own almond milk I soak almonds in water overnight drain them at put them in a blender with freshwater - a little seasalt andmaybe a date/honey ( depends I don´t like my milk that sweet- but I know americans are used to the sweetness ) blend untill smooth and sive true a fine coloth or metal sieve. Keep it it the fridge max 2-3 days. You can use the almond pulp in cakes etc. Depending on how much water you add you get more or less fatty milk. |

You could also make sesame seed milk, that would give you added calcium. |

You can also use water or juice as the liquid in baking. |
