I'm going to have to get a second job to pay for my husband's food!

He is 45, A+, 5'9.5", 196lbs and full of muscle (lifts weights daily).  He feels best at 185 and at the rate he is losing weight he should be there in 2 1/2 weeks!  He has a very square jaw, broad shoulders and is a real V-shape.  He always had a high metabolism and now it is off the charts!

He eats almost double what I eat and as much as LR4YT suggests him to eat.  I don't know his secretor status.  His sugar cravings have improved and he feels GREAT but is an eating machine.

He says he urinates so much now and also has up to 4 bowel movements a day.  He says as soon as he eats the food moves through him and soon he is ready to eat again.  Though he says his stools are normal and he has no stomach pain just grumbling.

Is this normal?  I cannot keep up with this eating machine...he is in the fridge at 10pm looking for more.  He looks great and has so much energy.  I am thinking of increasing his fats and protein even more though I give him quite a bit and a protein shake and bar to top it off already.  I'm thinking of getting Swami for him in hopes of that helping until I can schedule with Dr. D.  We do have limited funds so Swami would be more in line with what we could possibly afford.


Is this much eating and going to the bathroom normal?  What do you all think???  This is sort of funny until I look at my food bill!!!!

I probably eat more than WW and DD combined.  As far as I know, I always ate mounds of food as a child/young adult.  I know that most of the food I ate growing up was avoid, so that may have had lot to do with it.  

I don't know if my metabolism will slow down when I get the toxins cleaned out or if I will always burn this much.  I think it will slow down when the toxins are removed because when I was healing, but not detoxing, I didn't have as much appetite as I do again now, when I am detoxing heavily.

So you think he has some detox going on?  Very likely...he was eating wheat and cheese like a machine before and downing everything with coffee...probably drank more than a pot of coffee a day before.

Also, his gallbladder was taken out years ago.  This limits his ability to deal with fats right?

I eat a lot more than most people do...especially compared to the rest of my family...five to six meals a day (lots of veggies) and I am still losing.  I feel great also.  When we eat right our metabolic rates go up and our bodies run properly.   And like a furnace...we need to be fueled to keep gooooooiiiiinnnngg.

Debra...glad you and he don't live together...you would need 2 shopping carts!

Andrea...I like what you said and hope you are right.  He's always been ravenous and didn't get fat from it but his health was suffering.  Prior to BTD he was very easy to anger, his joints hurt, he sweated a lot, he was very fatigued and often had an upset stomach.  Now all of those things in one week have nearly vanished.  My biggest concern was how quickly food moved through him.  Fast!  I didn't think it sounded right but he swears he feels great.

I give him 3/4-1 cup brown rice or quinoa with every meal and add lentils and beans as well to his salads and they are HUGE!  I am not supposed to eat that many beans myself or grains so I can't compare there.  We eat tempeh once a week.  No tofu here...I can't eat it and he likes the tempeh better anyway.  We eat fish every single day (sardines, sockeye salmon, cod, tilapia or tuna) and have turkey at least twice a week.  Now I'm adding lamb tonight.  A portion of fish or turkey is at least 8 oz for him and pair that with 2-3 cups of veggies, 1 cup of rice, 1 tbs of oil and he still goes back for tastes out of the pot. (Remember he eats that much at lunch and dinner)  I also make miso soup to give him now and then before a meal and he eats fruits and nuts, celery and carrots throughout the day.  He eats 3 main meals and at least 3 snacks.  Type A shakes with ground flax, fruit and plain Westbrae soy milk...Unibars...OMG!  Oh and he drinks 3 or more cups of green tea a day too.  I'm exhausted thinking about feeding the beast.  .

Lori, I have a huge appetite, too. My husband can eat two small meals/day and I eat like a truck driver with 4 or 5 meals/day! I was also eating more when I first started the BTD because my body had never had beneficial foods. I think I was craving all the vitamins and minerals that I never had before.

I really think it is a Warrior thing. I actually marvel at how little some people eat
( I am married to a Gatherer  just like Sharon). My husband is the same way, leaves food on his plate and I can't understand it.

When I was a teenager ( 14-15 years old) I would go to my friend Joanne's house and eat.. everything. Like that children's book about the beast that eats and still asks for more.
Joanne had 5 kids in her family, I can still see the look on her face as I ate two or three pieces of fruit and asked for more.

I know her mom didn't want me to come over again, unless I brought my own food.

And yes I can go to the bathroom 3 times a day.. and sometimes 4, and the portions are big too.

Eeek if we ever meet all I will think about is what I just told you, but I guess I am among friends, right?
Knowing that Dr. D reads this is even weirder, I think I will have to wear my dark sunglasses next time we meet.

Just think how my poor hubby will feel as I posted this for him!  I told him I would and he looked shocked then said..."if it will help the cause".  He used to be such a private guy...

Andrea, I know what you mean. I am very open on this site and sometimes can't believe how much I talk about bathroom issues. My O gatherer husband is still shocked at how much I eat. It probably is a Warrior thing. I used to also eat too much at sleep over's and at friends houses.  

Lori, I think it's great that your husband is going 3-4 times a day. I think this is very healthy. Tell your husband that I'm envious. I only go to the bathroom 1/day but this is a miracle since I was constipated my whole life before BTD. I used to only go 1 every two weeks!

My WW thought at one time that she was missing out on her "fair share" if she didn't eat as much as I did...     It didn't take her too long to realize that she would never be able to keep up...  

GRAPHIC Alert!
The only time I have ever gained weight was when I wasn't moving anything out...  Everything just backed up, got compressed and stored.  I added about 40 lbs. of that!  Now that things have finally started moving again, I usually do 2 or 3 movements within 2 to 3 hours of getting up, then nothing the rest of the day.  The first is hard, second is what should be, the third is too loose.  I'm sure that as I continue to heal, this will even out, as well.

Andrea, Sharon and good ole' ABJoe...I just adore you guys!  I'm laughing so hard in my studio I absolutely cannot paint.  I'm sitting here wondering what this conversation would be like in person...I have a total visualization in my head and it is hysterical.  My DH is quite "proud' of his abilities.  I'm a 2 times a day gal in the AM.  I was always constipated as a kid and usually go that way if something I eat is wrong.  All's good now for me I just really can't get over is ability to stuff down food and it leave his body and boom...six pack abs!  Ok...anybody else reading my jealousy?  I guess I better keep painting pretty pictures to afford his appetite.  I will eventually genotype him.  Watch him be a Warrior.  It would make sense.  I get Warrior or Explorer from him.

Sharon...I will tell him you are envious...I can see him laughing now.

Funny you all talk about eating too much at parties/sleep overs.  So did I and now people tell me they "miss their favorite eating buddy".  Geez...to be known for that.

I relate to all of this...

As a child I ate a lot. However I ate things that totally stopped digestion like lots of meat, cheese, and maybe (maybe probably but I wish not) wheat. I was a large child with bad teeth.

Now I feel like eating quiet a bit. I seem to be losing weight. However I try to keep the complex carbohydrates down or things are not as pleasant. I do well with lots of fruit. I am sure I need to eat more vegetables. I wish I did not eat a half pound of tofu at a time because it is costing too much buying the pre-baked stuff. Sugar is ok but it sends me up and down a little but not impede weight loss (unfortunately it makes my nose go a bit allergic when I eat chocolate sun drops but I do it anyways).

The more elimination I have the better I feel. Nothing makes me feel better than having stuff move and go away. It is for that reason I have a new disgustingly expensive love of figs and especially compressed fig almond rounds sold in the cheese section of our local health food store as slices. Oh and the bigger the elimination the more proud I am.

ABJoe I had your problem too but the more fibrous things I eat and the less complex carbohydrates the better. Funny thing is the sugar I have been eating has not been fighting me at all it seems to not stand a chance to feed any form of candida so long as the flow keeps going. I do get some more compact elimination but sometimes I need to drink some more water or I realize I ate something with zero fiber in it.

Zero dairy works best for me I think. If I consume any my tooth that is a problem hurts. It makes me sleep extra hours, all sorts of things. I am going to go back on the polyflora A.

I would ignore the given recommendation for olive oil amounts and use a lot more, it helps me not be ravenous, so does eating some eggs and fish once in awhile. Plus quiet a bit of olive oil in my diet helps me eliminate better

I'm just thinking about "bathroom issues" and how much they tend to be discussed on the internet vs how much we discuss them IRL. I bet I could start a poll about "how often do you have bowel movements" and we'd get a whole discussion going that would spread to several pages. Yet, it would be kind of awkward to sit around Andrea's kitchen table with both of our families there and have the same conversation. My 15yo DD talk about her bowel issues in front of Andrea's 17yo DS?   It's just the nature of online forums- the relative anonymity makes us more open about "taboo" subjects.

Back to the original topic:

I've been making a lot of bean soups lately- the kids come home from school and have a bowl or two of soup at snacktime. Then we have something else for dinner. Filling up on soup first means that they're not filling up on pure carbs after school, and it also means that they're not having an early dinner (at "snack time") and then needing another meal around bedtime.

I sautee up chopped onions and celery in olive oil. Then I add water, cooked beans (I alternate what beans I use-  black, white, or a combo, you can use whatever beans are beneficial for you) and spices- salt, freshly ground  black pepper, sometimes a bay leaf- whatever looks good that day. I do this in the mornings and let it simmer all day (even if I'm going out), and then we eat it in the early afternoon. It's easy to make, dirt cheap, and very nutritious. You might want to try making bean soups for snacktime/ appetizer in addition to whatever else you're making for meals.

That's a real good idea . . having a little quick meal ready for them when they arrive home tired and hungry.  How many of us had our kids fill up on munching while we were cooking a meal and then they weren't hungry for dinner.

Ok...this was too funny and was the topic of our evening 2 1/2 mile walk (yes, I'm back to doing these because I am feeling so good and can enjoy them again).  

Thanks everyone for your input about your output.  This was all very helpful.  Ruthiegirl your soup idea is awesome...I'm going to steal that with pride.

Fed hubby 7 ounces of lamb, a ton of roasted root veggies and beets, spinach salad with nuts and a cranberry dressing I made with ground flax as well as 1 cup of brown rice.  He said he was very full.  We went for our walk and he came home and ate 1 cup of oatmeal with more nuts and some apples!  We laughed so hard.  Today he says he will try to eat more veggies and soup...yeah...I doubt it.  Pray that my paintings sell so I can feed this man.  

As an aside I have an artist friend who loves poop stories so much that he took his little dog's poo and had it cast and had a little charm made of it for a necklace for his wife!  I swear this is true.

As I have shared before, I need 3,000 calories a day to feel satisfied. I eat a lot more oil than recommended. I can't do dairy, so I need oil to fill that void & to feel full. I eat lots of veggies & use oil on them. I'm sure I eat more than my husband & have a huge apppetite.  It is easy to eat a whole pound of meat, fish, or poultry at one time. I try to limit carbs, but can eat a cup or 2 of rice easily.
The rarer times I make bean soup, I eat a few bowls to feel satisfied. Fruit & unsweetened chocolate have ben habits the past few years.

But I can fast occasionally. It is easier to eat nothing than eat lightly. I'm sure I have reactive hypoglycemia, tho my fasting blood sugar is wonderfullly normal.

So let your DH enjoy his food. If it costs too much, make him get an extra PT job. Also see if he can help with the cooking. Ha!
PS I had spent many hours per day in certain years being hungry. It is not pleasant. I am thankful to be able to eat & not get hungry for long. Being hungry kills your energy & motivation. It also makes you focus a lot on food. Somehow you get by, but you lose so much.

Ruthiegirl, thanks for the easy soup idea!  I'm always looking for healthy food to keep on hand in the freezer or fridge for both me and my husband.  My husband has sugar cravings (type A) and I've been looking for something to tide him over before we eat dinner (that doesn't involve sugar)--we eat late due to my work schedule, but he arrives home a few hours before me, very hungry.  While I am quite happy eating meat/veggies--he needs more grains/legumes in his life.  He would be happy to cook dinner for me, but he, sadly is (I don't say this to be mean, but it is just statement of fact) a complete failure and downright hazard in the kitchen.  He just doesn't have the attention span to follow my instructions and I've learned that he can't be trusted in the kitchen!     He does have many other redeeming qualities, though.   He is a wonderful man--I just have to do all the cooking,  which I am happy to do   I am now off to check our legume lists!
