Hey everyone, I am new to this and still trying to figure things out. I believe I am a nonsecretor base on foods that are not agreeing with me. Is that usually reliable? I have alot of prbems with food. All grains make me sick. They increase my blood sugar, cause edema, and joint pain. I tried rce one more time this weekendand am still aching from it. |

Hey uniquelymade...welcome to the BTD/GTD forum and this way of life. The best way to find out if you are a secretor or a non-secretor is to do the spit test. You can order this through NAP http://www.4yourtype.com/prodinfo.asp?number=TE002. You don't say where you are from so I am giving you the location as if you are from the USA. Depending on your health issues...if you feel good following the non-secretor foods by all means do so until you know for sure. Especially if you are having troubles with the grains. Have you been tested for celiac? Debra |

Welcome uniquelymade! Yes, the best way is to test your saliva. (There also another indirect way to do it through blood: Lewis Factor test). Though non-secretors tend to have more issues with grains than their non-secretor counterparts, the relationship with food is not so straight forward. For example, blood types O and B tend to have problems with many grains and legumes/beans too, even if they are secretors. |

Hi unquelymade, I am type O secretor - I have recently come to the conclusion that I can't eat any grains at all. Even quinoa gives me body aches and rice just puts weight on me. I also battle with edema. I have recently found a book from the blog Elana's Pantry and am making a bread from it and also scones - all with almond flour! url] http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ.....ativeASIN=158761345X[/url] You should get tested to be sure. I really felt that I was a nonnie also until my results came back that I am a secretor. Tea Rose |

What type of rice did you eat? Where did you buy it?

I was diagnosed as celiac 3 years ago but did not get better by just eliminating gluten. I also had to eliminate all dairy and soy. I still did not imprve much till just 2 weeks ago when I eliminated ALL grains. I really believe I am a non secretor. I had some blood work done and my alkaline phosphatase was low which is consistant with non secretors.
Someone asked what kind of rice I had eaten. It was brown basmati. I also tried rice milk and it made me have joint pain as well. |

Tea Rose, Thanks for the almond flour recommendation. I have been afraid of nuts bc I had a bad reaction a while back, but it was mixed nuts. I should give almonds a try. |

Welcome, uniquelymade! I like your name! Until you take your secretor test, by all means avoid the foods that make you feel bad and stick with the ones that make you feel good. But this does not mean that you are a non-secretor for sure. I was positive that my O friend was a non-secretor, but finally she sent off her saliva and she's a secretor! Nuts are really different on our systems when they are raw and compliant with our blood type or genotype. Mixed nuts are usually fried in semi-rancid oils and contain nuts that might not be good for your type. Try some raw almonds, pecans, walnuts . . in small amounts to test each one. Don't mix them first. That way, you can see which ones work and which ones don't. |

I agree with the others- the best thing to do is have the lab test done and know for sure. I'd also suggest getting a SWAMI so you can further refine your food choices.
Until you get these done (whether it's 2 weeks until the test arrives and then you send back for results or 2 years until you can afford it) keep track of what foods work for you and which foods don't, and then avoid the foods that don't sit well with you, no matter how they're listed in any of Dr. D's books. |

Ok, I checked out the cookbook (thanks!) on Amazon.....it cracked me up that if you scroll down to the first review....the person who wrote it totally ditzed agave and copied in "evidence" to support her theory. I never know what to believe regarding agave...all I know is I feel better on it rather than sugar. Anyway, just a sidenote that made me chuckle.....
I'm definately going to check out the cookbook though!!! Anyway, I'm an O nonnie and I was totally shocked that I was! So I guess that goes both ways. No matter what, if a food doesn't make you feel good, then don't eat it. I found that when I did my SWAMI, it pretty much reflected "most" of how I was already eating and so it just verified what I already knew. I didn't make that many "changes" to my diet, but the changes I did make made such a huge difference. I put alot of stock in intuition and I know others may not agree, but if you feel good on the nonnie diet, then just go for it and avoid the expense of the secretor test. You know your body best. |

A lot of us who don't do well on the regular diet, so well on the nonnie diet. By now you know that dairy is anathema for Os & soy isn't that great. I bet as you get going on the diet, you will see improvement. There are other celiacs here. They should come along & help. I don't do well on too many grains, but am not celiac. There are various gradations. You will eventually find your spot! You are in the right place! |

Hello Uniquely! You will have to sort and sift through the advice you get, to get results. Ultimately you are the judge of what will serve you. I bake quinoa, amaranth, and flaxmeal muffins for my gluten-free gliandin-low baked goods, but this may not necessarily work for you. The secretor test opens up all the doors after the basic BTD, and the Genotyping kit help you open the epigenetic side of the dietary system: GTD and Swami. You have already laid down a foundation for knowing your requirements for better health! I have found the Swami Xpress to give much more impressive results than either BTD or GTD. This may be more likely for Explorers, non secretors, and other epigenetic rarities. This reflects the power of specialization built into the program. Where you choose to stop on your journey of discovery is up to you! |

I thought I was too. But I'm not. But I have a lot of Nonnie like qualities. But according to the test I'm a secretor.
