Hi All,
I recently found out that the Seasonal Flu & H1N1 Vaccine has 25mcg of methylmercury per dose.
I've tried to find out how much fish has - i know the older the fish is, the more mercury it has...and i found some other info but nothing conclusive or credible.
Anyone? |

From Starkist Tuna - i cannot compare ppm to mcg.
Quoted Text
Q. Is there Mercury in Canned Tuna?
A. Canned tuna is safe and canned light meat tuna is listed on the EPA/FDA advisory as one of the fish that has very low levels of methylmercury. The trace levels of methylmercury found in canned tuna are far below the 1.0 parts per million (ppm) standard the FDA has set as safe. FDA testing has shown that canned light meat tuna has an average of 0.1 parts per million (ppm) and that Albacore (white meat) tuna has an average of 0.35 ppm. StarKist has appropriate testing procedures in place to ensure that both our light meat canned and white meat canned tuna are well below the FDA limit of 1 ppm.

Can of tuna might be 6 ounces.
6 oz * 28.35grams/ounce = 170 grams of Tuna
170 grams tuna * .35parts methylmercury/1000000 parts tuna = 59.5 millionths of a gram
59.5 millionths of a gram is the same as 59.5 mcg.
There is some difference between injecting a substance and eating that same substance.

light meat calculation
Can of tuna might be 6 ounces.
6 oz * 28.35grams/ounce = 170 grams of Tuna
170 grams tuna * .1parts methylmercury/1000000 parts tuna = 17 millionths of a gram
17 mcg per 6 oz can of tuna

Single dose's already drawn up in a syringe may not contain the mercury. Multi dose vials ( cheaper) contain additives. |

Actually canned tuna often contains less mercury. Mercury level is not changed by the canning process. Different types of tuna, different sizes of fish, and where the fish swam also affects the content of mercury in tuna. As you can see from the comments above one type of canned tuna contained 3.5 times as much mercury as the other type of canned tuna. Sometimes the factors is even than 3.5. In general tuna steaks will contain significantly more mercury than canned light tuna. |
