Since my last post, I seem to have lost my ileum . I know there are injections and even nasal gels to replace B12 that isn't being absorbed, but I was curious if the duodenum or colon could be retrained epigenetically to absorb more of this and other nutrients like iron. I read a post that says avoiding wheat gluten helps as does being a secretor. Any suggestions about helpful foods would be appreciated. Kidding aside, I did have surgery for Crohn's disease and I am recovering nicely |

Oops, I meant jejunum, not duodenum. I still have 2/3 of the small bowel. |

Ok what part is gone I am confused? I think the other portion of your small bowel may take over the task given some time.
Live cell and a probiotic might be in order to help the gut heal? |

The ileum (the final section) was removed along with the appendix and a few inches of colon. About 2/3 of the duodenum (the first part of the small bowel) and jejunum (middle section) are still there. I hope that what's left can adapt with proper nutrition to absorb more B12 and iron.

Wow! Sorry we didn't know about this surgery! We could have sent you good wishes & prayed for you. Glad you got through it & I'm sure between the internet & your dr., you will figure out the B12 situation. I think modern medicine is concious of the ability to absorb all nutrients. I think the duodenum is more important, but don't quote me! I bet if you search the internet, you will find the right info. as well as waiting for an answer here.
I bet Dr. D, if he reads this(& he reads a lot of us), can direct you where to get the right info. Meanwhile, relax & recover - with our blessings! |

I've read about a form of B12 in tablet form which you dissolve under the tongue and it's absorbed by the oral mucous membrane - thus avoiding any gut involvement.
Ask your doc about it. |

Active b12 or methyl b12. NAP makes the best one on the market. |

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I don't know the answer to your question but as a ulcerative proctitis/colitis sufferer for about 15 years I've often wondered about my ability to absorb things. Feel better, Jane |
