I wanted to thank Dr. D for also changing the way I view water.  I've been experimenting with drinking water 1/2 hour before meals and two hours after. I used to drink water constantly including with my meals. Now, I find it so much nicer to not drink with meals and my digestion is so much better.  Have any of you experimented with this? Are there any other reasons its best to keep water away from meals besides the diluting of digestive enzymes?

Hi Sharon and welcome; I don't know if there are more reasons, but for As and ABs with low stomac acid is very useful; if I need seldom I drink a cup of tea, of pineapple juice or a quarter of a glass wine with guests or friends, but not water with my meals.

I never drink water with a meal if at home...if I'm out with people I will drink sips of water with two or three lemon wedges squeezed into them as I wait for the meal to come

I read in the book "Your Body's Many Cries for Water" ( a VERY interesting book), that it's important to drink 1 cup of water, 20-30 minutes before eating, 1 cup 2 hours after eating and 2 cups before bed. Also to drink your water around these times as opposed to all day. It says your body uses water to digest your foods. If it's not available where it should be, it will pull it from other parts of your body. This can leave you dehydrated. It says that by the time you are thirsty, you are in the later stages of dehydration. That's what "it says".  

And also, is this in the right forum????

Being an O, I wait to eat a half hour after drink and just one hour to drink after eating.
       I used to wait 2 hours after eating but I have not noticed any difference changing it to 1 hour.    Now I have more time to drink!!!!!

       One time I did eat something and took a drink.  I could feel the enzymes getting
getting washed away,

I think i remember correctly..that in the eat right for your type...it said 0 blood can drink with their meals. Am i wrong?

Given that we should have lots of stomach acid, that would make sense. What I read was not written from a blood type point of view, so that wasn't taken in to consideration, but I think the wider opinion here is to not drink w/ meals so as not to dilute digestive enzymes/juices, etc.

I recently read Your Body's Many Cries for Water too and am trying to follow the rules. One important thing is that I wasn't drinking water before breakfast often enough. I think ensuring you do that at the least is so important so you don't start the day out in a dehydrated state. Does Dr. D. also say to drink 30 minutes before and then 2 hours after? It does make sense for the A type. I have to be better about the 2 hours after rule, but I want to sip my tea. I think ensuring I drink plain water before meals and at bedtime helps to ensure I don't go overboard on tea/caffeine. That author isn't a fan of caffeine, but I feel that I should make sure to get my beneficial teas. I do keep my coffee decaffeinated since I am sensitive to caffeine. Tea doesn't affect me as much as coffee. It's too bad that A's don't do well with carbonated water. I do love carbonation.

Same here, I feel like 2 hours is far too long to wait.  But then again, you do need water to digest protein.  As an O, this is important.  I've eaten some meals (mostly eating out) where I've had to drink while I was eating, which helped a lot.   If I wait too long after eating, I end up getting so thirsty that I drink way too much & end up having to use the restroom for the rest of the day.

if the food you are eating is dry, by all means, do drink, sipping of course.....

I never have the need to drink while I m eating, cause I make sure I am having enough veggies, which are very hydrating and do not require extra liquid.

there are no set rules in that regard....we are all different and require adjusting accordingly.

If you need to take meds or supplements with meals, you might need to drink a mouthful of water during a meal.


My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

I drink whenever I'm thirsty, and haven't deliberately tried or tried not to drink with my meals.

"Your Body's Many Cries for Water" helped me a lot. Even though I drank a lot of water anyway, I was able for the first time to see a connection between not drinking enough water (for me -- probably individualized) and getting headaches and not sleeping well at night. I can't even remember the last time I needed anything for a headache, but it was probably a couple of years ago -- and then I drank two large glasses of water with no medication, and it went away. Whenever I feel one creeping up on me, I just drink a big glass of water.

Sometimes, though, I don't notice that sign of pre-dehydration, and go to bed without having drunk enough. *Big mistake*! I toss and turn all night, until I finally go and drink a big glass of water. Then I can drift off to dream-land (until my bladder wakes me up  ). Still, I've found I get more water that way than trying to sleep dehydrated.

I'll be more conscious about not drinking while I'm eating, and see if that helps.

Since I'm not a dr, I'll go out on a limb here and say the connection between not drinking enough water and many illnesses is pretty much across the board. Since our bodies are 70% water, it makes sense that if we don't drink enough, there will be consequences. Just like if we don't water our plants/ veggies/crops, they too whither up and die.  
I hear ya about drinking alot before bed and then being up to potty thru the night. I agree tho, that's better than being dehydrated.

I have just started reading a book "Health without Medicine by L B Cole circa 1848"

Interesting that Ellen White, founder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, allegedly plagiarised Cole's and put out the information as her own.

Large quantities of any kind of drinks should be
avoided. Even cold water maybe taken too largely.
Much depends upon habit; if we allow ourselves in the
custom of drinking much, we shall want much; if we
accustom ourselves to drink but little, we shall want
but little. The objection to a large quantity is this: it
distends the stomach beyond its natural dimensions,
and therefore weakens it; it also dilutes the gastric
juice, and therefore weakens that. One or two common
tea-cups of any kind of drink, taken with our meals, is
sufficient. If we take more, it weakens the gastric juice,
and injures the digestive process. Laborers, at their
meals, and between meals, are inclined to drink far too
much. Their thirst on the whole is no less for drinking
so largely, and they weaken themselves by it. Besides,
in hot weather, many are seriously injured, and even
destroyed sometimes, by too large quantities of cold
water. If they want to drink often, they must confine
themselves to very small quantities at a time.

I drink wine with dinner.  Tea with breakfast.  Not a lot of either, certainly not so much to distend my stomach.     I drink water on its own, have to force myself.

I find that I tend to overeat if I don't drink with meals. A few sips (or the rest of the glass) of water will keep me from reaching for 2nd helpings.

"One or two common tea-cups of any kind of drink..." and by that they mean a tea cup and not a mug! My tea cups usually hold 6 ounces at the most. Also, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, they advise to never drink cold drinks. The Chinese doctor that I used to see always put boiled water in his glass and then topped it up with room temperature water. His mug was a small 8 ounce type. Drinking hot/warm drinks gets things moving into the intestines and cold drinks can be a shock to the stomach and make foods more stagnant.

We all need to bear in mind that we're all individuals, and much of the "how to consume  fluids" advice is coming from  "one size fits all" sources.

Some people need more water than others. Some people do best having some extra fluids with meals, while others do best drinking water away from meals so they dont' dilute digestive enzymes. People with more sensitive digestion are more likely to benefit from the advice about "what to eat or drink with what" than people with "iron stomachs."

Some of the advice can be contradictory. "sip slowly throughout the day; don't gulp it down quickly" plus "don't drink with or too close to meals" can turn into "not drinking enough at all" if both are followed too quickly.

My advice to newbies is to not worry about this just yet. Incorporate the diet and keep it simple. Look into "how you drink your water" later, and only if you feel the need to.

With all of the various diets I've tried over the years, at some point I did the who water routine.  It just stressed me out.  Now I just listen to my body and I drink when I'm thirsty, regardless of when the food goes in.  Seems to work for me!

I find that not drinking water during meals, or drinking very little if I do get thirsty, helps with my digestion.

If I do feel like drinking something during the meal, it would be either carbonated water (sometimes) or broth (very occasionally). Carbonated mineral water is good for Type O's and I do find that it helps with my digestion.

My ex told me that years ago. It's a yogi thing not to drink with a meal.  I can't do it. I have a hiatal hernia and I need to wash it down. But I try only to drink just enough to assist digestion. Plus I use green tea, or ginger ale, ginger tea.. sometimes soymilk.

I'm with Equipro, I prefer to drink when I'm thirsty.  But I'm also the type who will put off drinking (and eating) when I'm engaged in an occupation because I don't want to stop what I'm doing to go eat or drink, so I will ignore my bodily needs until it gets beyond ignoring.
