Hey anglii...welcome to the forum and this way of life.   For a secretor test it is done through spitting into a tube and sending it off to a lab to have it analyzed.  Since you are in Canada, the test will be sent off to Nova Scotia.  To order a secretor test you can get it through ABO essentials with Mike Staffieri who is located in Toronto.

So what would happen if you tried using the blood typing card with saliva? Would the test simply not work?

Thanks Debra, Lola but the test is $70 and out of my budget for my family of 6. I thought maybe the blood typing cards might work since we are all A, B and AB. I don't think it would work for O types Ruthie.

Here's what I thought might work: I mix a drop of my daughter's B blood with my AB spit on the Anti-A circle. If this agglutinates then I must be a secretor because the B blood wouldn't clump on the A circle. Using just spit wouldn't work well because you wouldn't be able to see the clumping.

Thanks for asking this question as I also had wondered the same!
Will  the secretor  tests ever run a sale or special? The economy is weak right now and it would be so helpful for many of us.

Well my 'budget approach' would be this - the majority of people are secretors so chances are your family are secretors - put them on a secretor diet and see how everybody is doing.  If the secretor guidelines do not agree with one of you try them on the nonnie guidelines and see what difference that makes...

If you can affort to buy some tests but not six or not six at once I'd get anybody with serious health issues that need to be addressed urgently tested followed by any As - the largest number of differences in food values are in the A diet.

I actually reused a blood card this weekend. Person typed as an O negative, so no agglutination in any of the circles occured. My friend thought she was an A.. so we put her blood on top of the O card. Not sure how well it worked but it did agglutinate in only the A section.

I don't trust it 100% but figured we would give it a try.

Not sure  that this would happen because most of the fee is probably for the processing which is not done by NAP but by the Smokie Mountain lab. Have you ever seen a lab have a sale?

The secretor test via saliva is based on hemagglutination inhibition. Assuming there are free ABO antigens in the saliva; when saliva is mixed with anti A, anti B, and or anti O lectins these antigens neutralize the antiserum or lectins used in the test. This disables the normal function of the antiserum/lectin thus inhibiting agglutination when group A, group B or group O cells are used as part of the testing.

Eldon cards will not work with saliva. Secretor tesing is based on a different principle than normal ABO blood grouping.
