I read in the book that I should be in bed by 11pm.  I confess, I am a night owl.  I usually don't hit the sack until 12 - 1 am.  The book also says I should get a min of 8 hours rest and I do that just fine.  It is just getting to bed by 11pm  AZ time that I have trouble with.  I just don't get tired until then.  I have tried Valerian tea, but it has not helped.

Anyone else here a night owl?  What are you all using to get to bed earlier?

Actually one should be in bed and asleep by 10PM.  Your adrenals will kick in for a 2nd shift if you're up past that. Not a good thing. Your body does it's repair work between 10PM and 1AM.  Once your adrenals kick in again, it's very hard to wind down and get to sleep. Have a look at some of the adrenal threads here, if you're interested.
Are sweet potatoes okay for your b/t?  Try having a good carb to relax you. If you can have s/p, smother it w/ ghee

Maybe try and get up a little earlier?
are you getting good exercise in during the day to help burn up that extra energy?
And of course limit caffeine and sugars in the PM {or all the time}

By nature I'm a morning person, but lately, say over the last two to three months, I've been having a difficult time going to bed by 10pm. Mostly, I knit in the evenings and knitting is like meditation for me and I can go on and on and on without realizing it's suddenly midnight.

One thing I've been doing lately is to take a dropper-ful of White Chestnut Bach Flower Remedy just before bed; this helps me go to sleep by turning down the repetitious thoughts that can circulate in my head.

Another thing you can try is eating some starchy thing (compliant, of course) at your evening meal. Starchies make me tired.


Let go of resistance; feel appreciation for what is, and eagerness for what is coming.

I can have sweet potatoes and butter.  I am not a big fan of them, other than as french fries and that really isn't good for me.  But, I will try it with ghee on it and see if it helps.  My fear is the calories and fat before bed, I'd like to lose 20 lbs.

I just started back to exercising this week.  My body feels like it has been beaten with a crowbar!!  It is tired beyond belief.  It is my head that doesn't slow down.  I have tried the getting up early and I still stay up late.  I am just cranky all morning, feel crappy all day and then can't sleep at night.  The cycle just continues.  Perhaps with the more exercise I incorporate into my daily routine the more tired mentally I will be.  I know with exercise I am certainly more hungry and that didn't take anytime for my body to give me that response.

My husband is an A and can fall asleep anywhere at anytime.  It is frustrating.

I can sleep through almost anything (even when I had an MRI done on my lower back) if I'm tired enough. I just have trouble going to bed before midnight.

We are all different. Maybe that is natural for you.  If you are alert later, then don't worry.  I am a morning person, but used to have trouble sleeping. If you have trouble sleeping, but are tired, try what was recommended & add cal/mag/vit. D, etc.
But if you truly are a nightish person( my aunt is a 'night owl' who natually can stay up all night & normally wakes up around 2 PM!), be yourself!
Many folks naturally have your kind of schedule.  I think they are called 'afternoon people' which most of my family I came from were. They hit their stride in the afternoon, when I slump.  So, I don't know your work schedule or if you have kids that need you that you have to be up early.  I think you are a nurse. Maybe you should work 2nd shift if you can. Don't agonize if that is your natural rhythm.  Maybe Dr. D can shed some light on the sleep issue.  If you must wake up early, use a light box or something like that. Best wishes!! BTW, as you do more BTD/GTD, you may find you need less sleep. I used to be useless unless I got those 8 hours. Several years ago, it went to 7.

Exactlly the same Drea, but my usual schedule is 1-2am till 7-8- and  in the weekend a little bit more .please tell me crazy I need it ! I'd like to be in bed around midnight !
2-7 is really a too short sleepnight.

I used to be a  night owl....especially when I was in college and we'd drink coffee all
night to study.  Got into really bad habits...And then when married, I found the only time I had
all to myself was when my kids and husband went to sleep...so that's when I'd start reading or watching TV...staying up way too late...start my next day really tired because the kids
had to get up and go to school and they needed breakfast... It became a vicious cycle...throwing
off my entire day...burning out my adrenals and making me irritable.

I've discovered I'm not a night person at all....I feel tired around 10:30 and naturally want to
wake up around 7.  I need a lot of sleep...8-9 hours and love to wake up feeling rested and be able to remember my dreams.  

I take a cal/mag supplement before bed plus 1,000 units of D...it's very effective for a good night's sleep for me.  Sometimes I drink chamomile tea with a chunk of fresh ginger and
honey around 8 pm...

some nice sea salt is good on the s/p with ghee too.    I understand your concern about gaining weight when eating before bedtime, but I used to eat twice as much ghee as I do now (maybe more) and I didn't gain weight. Ghee is a good fat, in 2 ways.

I just wanted to mention about the sleep cycle. Most people's is around 90 minutes........if I have to be up at a certain time, I try to set my alarm at the end of the cycle. For example, if I go to bed at 10PM, I would set my alarm for 7AM, that way I am at the end of it not in the middle. If I were to set my alarm for say, 6:15AM, I would be smack in the middle and in my deepest sleep (theoretically) and I would be definitely be more tired and cranky. I can always tell when my DH gets up during the time I'm in my deepest sleep because I don't hear him. If I'm at the end of the cycle, I do. Does this make sense to you?

I cant comment on the calcium part of the equation, but I know magnesium helps me to sleep better and helps to also keep me more regular. Might add a Vit D at night to see how that helps. I wake up alot thru the night. Mostly from eating avoids I think tho. Even one will do the trick!

Ive been trying to go to sleep earlier like 11-11:30 PM.   I watch the news at 10 M then get ready for bed at 10:30 PM.  Then I read in bed until between 11 PM & midnight.  I get up between 6 & 6:30 AM.   I fall asleep promptly when I put down the book, shut off the lights and lie my head down.

I understand what you said about the sleep cycle perfectly.  Many days when my husband gets ready for work I never hear him.  As a matter of fact I alot of times don't even remember him kiss me goodbye before he leaves because I am out cold, even though he said I talked to him.

Now on mornings when I went to bed a little earlier (with the assistance of a sleep aid ) because I need to be up earlier for an appointment, when he kisses me goodbye I wake up and can't go back to sleep.  It is so frustrating, cause I know I don't need to be up for another hour and could have used the sleep.  Obviously, I am at the closer to the end of my sleep cycle when that happens.

I know these vitamins are off and I am working on getting them back in line.

Oddly I am alert later in the evening.  I wish I were tired earlier, I try, but it just doesn't happen.  My best times for sleep are between 12-1 am through 8-9 am.  I do very well with those hours.  I try and do all my scheduling both for work and personal to start no earlier than 10:30 am.  This way I get my rests, I am fresh and ready to do what I need to do for the day.

I hate it when that happens!!  Some mornings when I am awakened by the DH, I too cannot get back to sleep. I usually have at least 3 or 4 more hours I could sleep. Grrrrr....  
On the mornings you can't get back to sleep,,,,,,,,,,,,count back by 1-1/2 hour intervals and see if you are indeed at the end of the sleep cycle. I do that sometimes just out of curiosity.

Thanks, fellow As, for sharing your sleep remedies.  I have been taking melatonin for years, but I don't think it is effective for me.  I'll try the extra magnesium tonight along with calcium/D/Magnesium.

I suspect that when my adrenals are healthier, candida routed out, cortisol handled better, I won't have as much difficulty.  When I was younger I could work all day and spend the evening, sometimes until 2am rehearsing and jamming, get 4 or 5 hours and be back at it.  For several years recently I took Elavil (antidepressant) which knocked me out like a drunk and slowed me up way into the next day.  I slept, but gained  10 pounds a year for 10 years, even with the chromium picolinate to counter carb cravings.  And it was no fun being a zombie.

My father and his father rarely slept more than 4 or 5 hours and were up very early every morning, very active guys, but they did meditate a lot.  I let myself take little breaks when I remember to during the day, and when I can't sleep, I rest.  I wake up several times a night usually.

My mother needed the full eight hours or more to keep it together at all.  

There have been times I've been so involved in a creative project that I don't want to sleep, all revved up and concentrated...OCDish.  I don't seem to be able to just drop out at the click of a finger like my O husband, who, given the opportunity can sleep for many hours starting any time of day or night.

I wonder what makes a person an "afternoon" person or a "night owl."  I'm curious whether the time of day or night one was born has anything to do with it.  I was born late late afternoon in winter.

But I agree that when there are significant health issues prominent it is important to sleep like a baby, detox and repair as thoroughly and as soon as possible.   Not getting enough sleep or waking up too many times frequently leaves me shaky and uncoordinated.  I have that problem with going straight into delta and thus waking up shortly after I fall asleep, disturbed cycle.  It doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough.  And if I fall asleep during the day, it happens then.

OMG that is me tooo.  I get to working on my website or an art project and don't realize how late it is.  I am my most creative in the evenings later.  Odd huh?  I think it is because I have no interuptions when it is late.  No phone ringing, no errands to run, no appointments etc.  So I probably am a little OCD and perhaps a little ADD.

I started drinking valarian tea in the evenings.  I was hoping it would help me sleep, but no such luck.

Frosty: Do you have enough magnesium, boron, silica, etc.? I need those to sleep.
The chiro (in 2004) said not to overdo the boron, but I need it most nights. Maybe after a few years, I won't need as much as I get saturated with it.
Again, maybe your schedule is natural for you & you shouldn't force it.
