My main tips right now are:

1.  "Don't pull the trigger" meaning no large masses of carbs that start the cycle of blood sugar swings

2.  Carbs eaten primarily if not exclusively from vegetables supplemented when needing certain nutrients with fruit or other low quantity carb servings.

3.  If I feel hungry and need calories, eat protein

4.  If I feel hungry and don't need calories, exercise

Any other tips along these lines?

Could you clarify the issue a bit? Not real sure if you are just trying to deal with cravings or if you are having diabetic issues, or perhaps something else in between.

I've delayed losing weight for a number of months because my motivations have been too short term.  But now the time is right and it's time to change.  I know my challenges come from cravings and cravings primarily from blood sugar swings.  Blood sugar cravings are just false panic by the brain that it won't have enough glucose to operate.  That said, no matter how well I comprehend that cognitively, it's very difficult to face that kind of physiological draw and it requires weapons used by discipline and direct resistance to everything that draws me to carbs and calories.

I thought some good tips might help and I wondered if others have any.  I may not be diagnosed diabetic, but I clearly resist insulin or I couldn't have built a belly (46-in waist) with body weight of 285 pounds at 69 inches (175.26 cm) tall.  

Carbs are confusing to my logical brain because when I eat them in large servings I get a short but very clear period of brain activity which can be extended with more carbs.  When I stop the extending, it's because I resist cravings or eat so much I sleep it away some.

Being sedantary and sitting at a computer, thinking, and enjoying reading and googling things all that learning, makes my brain want to function at a solid level.  This makes it very tempting to sit at the computer at eat off and on for long stretches.

I got into this obesity from an emotional reaction to the end of a relationship which I'm responsible for.  The weight climbed until last February when 285 jsut became a number I wouldn't allow to increase.  In March I briefly went down 10 lbs as I started to swim every morning for about 10 days.  Unfortunately some major projects in very, very short time periods came at work and all bets were off because I tend to obsess on a project until completion.  Completion is now in the recent past for all the intense projects so it's time to get back to where I left off in March.  

Speaking of this topic, are there tips for not obsessing about a project to the point it interrupts exercise and weight loss?  It's bound to happen again.  And job cuts always loom in my industry though my career in general is solid.  I'm just hoping for pragmatic, practical tips from real people, tales from the front if you will,  which might help when I need a nudge.

And as far as Genotype, I'm still resisting the testing conclusions that I'm an Explorer.  I feel more confident that I'm a Gatherer.  There are several measurements like jaw angle and leg/torso measurements I made myself which I don't trust.  But I do know it's one of those two GenoTypes. None of the others make sense with me.

It can't hurt you to try the Gatherer diet, if that's what you're leaning toward.  Give it a shot!  One of its focuses is on helping people with insulin resistance.  Once you get down to your optimal weight, perhaps you can re-evaluate if you want to try the Explorer diet, or stick with the Gatherer diet.

L-tyrosine, pumpkin seeds and oregano (either the oil or the spice on lots of things).  This helps aid in the dying off of Candida which causes a lot of cravings as it feeds on sugar.

And Tom...please try and get compliant meals done ahead of time and freeze them.  Take one day on the weekend and just cook up a storm and put them into individual servings so you can have them ready when you need them.  I do this and take them out the night before.  As a 'Gatherer' I need to have things ready as I am on the go alot.  Proteins are so easy to do into 4-6 oz. (your fist size) servings.  Go buy a turkey (although I usually just buy turkey parts, the legs and necks are what I like the  best (Isa says it is a nonnie thing ), boneless lamb roast, beef (it is a neutral but my body is much happier now that it is back), buffalo (I buy mine in already pre-made burgers and they have no avoids in them.  Not pre-packaged...just pre-made in a butcher shop in the big city of Sudbury).  Also,  wild salmon...whether canned or fresh.  This one is really great for cravings and hunger.   I was eating only half a can with veggies and found myself hungry after about an hour or so.  Then I reread Genotype and found that I wasn't eating enough of any of the proteins.  Much better now.  I always measure with my fist now.   

Also, the grains...basmati rice is great.  Although Dr. D. says 2-3 servings a day...I have only been doing 1-2 which has helped tremendously.  I was still stuck in BTD mode with no grains.  Quinoa is a diamond food and is also great.

Fresh diamond and superfoods veggies with your proteins whenever you can.  If you have to eat frozen or canned it is better than not eating any at all.

And...getting on that treadmill to get the sweat and tension out.  Did you ever get a mini-trampoline?  You don't even have to jump high on it...just enough to get you moving up and down on it.

Oh yeah...and no avoids in the house if possible.  That way if you are hungry you eat the things that you have prepared.  Sometimes I have overeaten the prepared stuff, but I don't feel bad the next day, at all, because I didn't eat any avoids.

Yerba Mate tea and green tea and water with a pinch of sea salt too.

And good oils and fats like ghee, olive oil and walnut oil.

If you can, try and stay with mostly the diamond foods whether you are doing 'Gatherer' or 'Explorer'.

Oh yeah, what Debra said about candida is good info too.  I just went through a 3 week stint of very low carbs/sugars (also excluding most compliant fruits) trying to kill off the rest of my yeast overgrowth, and cravings are murder.  Us nonnies are particularly susceptible to yeast overgrowths.  Hang in there, those critters are making a last stand, you just need to outlast them!

Oh Tom, maybe it's because I'm another O-nonnie, but I can SO relate to how you're feeling. Especially the sugar and the obsessing.

Another tip with sugar cravings, is not to snack on fruit, fresh, juiced or dried, until you have the cravings under control. Candida loves sugar from any source, so minimise your fruit intake right now. If you eat it along with other food then you digest it rather than allowing the candida to get any. Try adding mango to rice, or raisins to curry, that kind of thing.

Debra's right - remove the avoids from the house. I gave away all my Christmas and birthday chocolate except one box. That one box is out of date and I don't even like them but they've been calling to me. I'm going to throw them down the chute as soon as I've posted this!

As for obsessing, I never found a solution. I suppose that's a nonnie thing. We know we're doing something unhealthy and we still do it, don't we? It's as though our bodies tell our brains "stop nagging for crying out loud - I deserve a break!" and bang go the good resolutions. One thing I have noticed about obsessing is that the more compliant I am, the easier it is not to obsess. Maybe I'm just transferring my obsessions from whatever project to doing the BTD the best I can, but at least that's a healthy obsession!

The only way I have found to stop obsessing about sugar is to not have any in the house...stay completely compliant and get that great O exercise in.  Then, I feel I can take on the world.  Right now it has been hard, but I have been doing it, with two girls home from school and a hubby home on the weekends that do not do BTD/GTD and are bringing in the avoids like crazy.  Especially the sugars.   I keep repeating to myself to remember how I feel when I eat that c**p and Lola's signature of Dr. D's quote about looking for magic fixes, reading the book and doing the work.  Also, in my signature...'You are what you do...not what you say.'  When I eat avoids my family sees that and they have kind of a snicker face and think ha.  Last night our oldest daughter had a birthday party for one of her girlfriends and she had made a cake for her.  It was left on the table and I had no desire to eat any of it.  Now...if there had been potato chips...that may have been a different story.

I want to make sure posters understand that I have never to my knowledge had Candida, but I do understand the intent of the Candida advice is based on what is known from Candida in parallel about sugar's effect.  

I did make an enourmous batch of my favorite O-Nonnie Sautee.  I brown fresh grass fed, 98% fat free ground longhorn beef in processed olive oil at a temperature below smoke point then I sprinkle on turmeric and tarragon, in my food processor I chop together shredded uncooked kale leaves and red pepper with a few walnuts and pecans and add it to the browned beef.  I let it sautee until the kale bits are cooked, but still bright green.  I ALWAYS feel good after a meal of this.  I can't explain it, but I feel good when I eat this.

Anyway, I made enough to last the week per Debra's suggestion.

I second this becuase I find the gatherer diet reduces my cravings enormously, I think the daily sprinkle of cinnamon contributes to blood sugar regularity also...

DH and I didn't know we had candida overgrowth either, until we got tested by a natural therapist. Neither of us had any symptoms. I never knew that was possible until then. The symptoms can be as nebulous as difficulty concentrating, or increased mucus, or generalised lowness, which I would never ever have put down to candida. I even read one article attributing smelly feet to it! You could get checked out, or you could just stay off sugary things for a few months and see whether you feel better.

The beef saute sounds delish Tom - might have to try that myself!

Guess it depends on how you look at exercise.  Presumably you did not stop to eat, shower or sleep over the intense period at work.  So if you consider exercise to be of equal importance you will find time to do it.  

Try to exercise first thing in the morning then you have no excuses about how a bad day at work meant you had to work late and stopped you from exercising...

As for obsessing about work - I do that.  But I keep telling myself that I will still be around when I am retired.  And how much I can enjoy life then will depend, to a very large degree, on how I treat my body now!  So obsessing about my health should be just as important as obsessing about the deadline...

Since it was mentioned up there I am going to ask my question on this thread....What exactly is the 'benefit' of seltzer water?  I gave up sodas and other carbonated drinks years ago, except for champagne on special occasions of course, because it makes me so bloated and burpy and gassy that it is completely uncomfortable for me.  So is it the carbonation that makes it beneficial?  I have tried to drink this twice in the last week and havent been able to drink more than like 4 oz.  If it isnt the carbonation then can I let it go flat and drink it that way?

You may measure out as an Explorer, but at Dr. D's clinic they also take into account your current health challenges and if blood sugar regulation and insulin resistance are yours, even the good doctor himself might tip you over to Gatherer.  It's worth a shot.

As for tips, the only advice I can give is that every second of every day you have a choice.  You may not always choose wisely, but you can learn and do better next time.  Good diet habits must be acquired like any skills, through practice.  Nobody expects to be good at a sport, for example, the first time they play, so why expect to be perfect at dieting right away?

Carbonated water gives me a sour taste in my mouth, so even tho it is supposed to be a bennie for Os, it may not be for everyone.
Also, maybe someone can start a thread about the percentages of each BT in the Explorer GT. Is it the same as the general population? Same for the other GTs--Are the B & AB ratios for Nomads the same as the gen pop?  Maybe it isn't exactly known.

OMG, is that what it is!! I've had that sour taste in my mouth for a few days and had NO idea what was causing it. Have been drinking seltzer for several days as well. I'll be darned.    Thanks

Do you think it is the water itself or the carbonation that leaves the sour taste?  

I went home and experimented the other night and found a so-so way to drink it.  I still only drank a small glass though.  I added some lemon juice, some lime juice and some stevia.  Came out kind of like a fizzy lemonade.  Or for those of you who have ever tasted it....Alka-Seltzer Plus cold medicine

Coffea for the obsessing. Neofeedback and biofeed back.

What helps me with the carbs - always eat the same amount of protein as carbs.  

I love the O green tea.  

I can't believe I drink tea without sugar - I started with honey then kept decreasing it till now I am ok without it.
