...Im not sure if what your referring to is the literal reference ot the fairy tale or something to do with eating.  It made me laugh because all of my life I have been like that and I dont know my secretor status yet.  I cant sleep on rough or wrinkled sheets.  I notice every little flaw in EVERYTHING.  Every piece of lint on the carpet or drip on the tile.  And of course every flaw in myself.  As Ive gotten older Ive gotten slightly better and try to remind myself what my mother would say...."No one will notice on a galloping horse"...whatever that means

I think it has to do with the fact that our systems run best on a very lean energy mixture of fats and carbs.  Too much of that stuff and it just overloads our physiologies too easily, and we get agitated and edgy.

Beyond this, our immune systems don't have the means to fight pathogens pre-emptively, by means of secreted BT antigens, so our systems actually have to deploy immune cells themselves to fight in a much more hand-to-hand combat sort of way.

I think all these things together make up very vigilant and edgy by nature.

I finally looked up "Princess and the Pea".  That's about right!  Like Ron said, nonnies have to walk a thin line to stay balanced and healthy...I sure do.  I suspect that the non-secretor trait is a harmful mutation.  The only good things I seem to get out of it are that I can eat tomatoes and my blood clots faster.

I don't know, but it is real, duuuuuuuuuuuuude.  So real!

My theory is that because we don't have "guards at the gate" (we don't secrete our blood type antigen[s] into our bodily fluids like secretors do), we have heightened sensitivities, much like a blind person might have heightened hearing.  We become exquisitely sensitive in other ways to compensate for the fact that we don't have any antigens swimmin' around to fight the good fight, so to speak.

Exactly.  My parents always complained I was the Princess in The Princess and the Pea.  I think my most uttered phrase was "That bothers me!"

I have had that syndrone all of my life.  I cannot sleep on anything wrinkled.  When I was in my early 20's I developed Graves disease and my senstitivites intensified.  I also found out recently that O's are prone to thyroid disease.

Another Highly Sensitive Person (nonnie) here.  When I get overwhelmed with noise (especially), I'm like "Don't touch me.  Go away."  I have to fight it even with my children.  If they're extra clingy and fussy, it's all I can do to not swat them away and then run away myself.  Too much stimulation makes me way over-sensitive.

Yes, sensitivity to noise is a big nonnie thing.  I am contending with a neighbor (been contending with this guy for ten years now--that'd be a DECADE, for anyone who is keeping count...oh, the horror) who is totally oblivious to boundaries.  The latest thing is, he has bought his son some sort of ATV/go-cart thing.  It is basically a CAR, which his NINE-YEAR-OLD son drives at full speed (about 45 mph) all around the rear alleys (guess who parks in a rear garage, off the alley?  yeah, ME), crosses the street, and goes all over this PRIVATE grass lot that is for sale.  It is totally illegal and very upsetting on many levels (such as that this thing is tearing up the grass on my rear alley easement, between the back of my little bitty, 3-foot wire fence and the unpaved alley), but one of the many levels is the NOISE this thing emits.  Boy howdy.  I'm in my house, windows shut, a/c on, TV on, and STILL this thing gets to me.

But that's an obvious one.  I'm sensitive to any little noise whatsoever.  My mom often comments on this.  I'll be like "Okay, what IS that?", and she'll say "What's what?".  "That NOISE?!!!!!!!!  You don't hear that?!!!!!!  Nope, she never even knows what I'm talking about.  And if I point it out to her and describe it, she will say, oooh, well, I didn't notice it.

Gillian, she is very wise and I have started saying it myself when thinks arent as perfect as I would like.

Noise is a big deal for me, and was an even bigger deal before starting BTD.

On July 4 last year I traveled to Jamestown, VA with friends, who blaired this awful techno and pop "music" all the way there, singing along with it too.  I just put up with it, but man, I was so happy to get out when we arrived.  The time there was fun, but I was ready to go before the fireworks started, and that noise got to me.  On the way back, it was more of the same as the trip there, only I was very tired, and I was on the verge of tears (even wearing some earplugs I miraculously had stashed in my backpack) when I finally asked them to kill the music.

I doesn't bother me as much now, but if I am tired or overstimulated, it shows up again.

Yes.  After a bad night's sleep my tolerance level of noise is 0.  My brother used to have this car --it was a purple '72 Dodge Dart (my dad had one too but it was green) --he did the muffler all weird and it was loud.  It didn't bother me until the mph was about 45-50, then the rpm got to be such that maybe it resonated with my brain or something, but if he drove a certain mph I'd have to clench my teeth and cover my ears to keep my head from rattling.  Didn't bother anybody else in the car.  Maybe that was the same frequency as my thoughts.

I thought non-secretors came 1st and secretors mutated to combat virus which evolved later.  Don’t we clot faster so if our ancestors were injured they could run out of harm?  I think we’re sensitive because our Nonie genes sensitivities are heightened to recognize something different.  This is just my wild opinion.

Could be, that was just my personal insight, with no science behind it.

I'm with you guys.  Noise that's too loud really grates, people standing too close or my personal bug-bear - clothing that's too something.  My husband almost despairs when I need new clothes because it's a constant issue that a) I don't like trying things on and b)I'm really specific about fabrics.  I can't handle anything scratchy or too clingy.  Generally I'm good with cotton or cotton blends, but processed fabrics aren't as good.  Sheets and towels can be problematic as well.

It does have its good points though, I can notice a dip in a floor at 20 paces (helpful when looking at houses), can smell a gas leak a mile off and can hear an ambulance at roughly the same time as our Malamutes (which is useful if they start howling).

hahah this is all so true.  Thank goodness though, I've transitioned from night to day with the BTD/GTD and things don't bother me like they used to.  I used to get irritated at everything, and think the world just had problems.   I'm sooooo much more chill now.  It's great.

Do any of you have the same sensitivities to smells and odors?  I have been driving my family crazy for years about being able to smell any and every little thing.  When I was just a toddler my parents had already noticed that I could smell anything from a mile away.  Sometimes its overwhelming.  I have to practically run past the soaps aisle at the store.  If I have to go down it I try to know what I need before venturing in.  Being around any kind of smoke makes my nose plug up.  The same with stores that have hot foods and smell like old grease, I won't shop there.  I can smell if a table has been wiped down with a not so clean cloth.  It's really a curse.  My family are all smokers and if we get together I am the PIA that can't stand the smoke.  I have to go home and shower and wash my clothes.  God forbid anyone wearing too much cologne sit near me at a movie or event, I just might have to leave.  Febreeze has become my best friend.  I even keep one in my car.
