I suspect I might be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder. I have not been on the diet in the past 6 months, but I think starting today at dinner, I am going to abide by the BTD. I had wonderful results as far as acne and weight loss go the last time I was on the diet so Im looking forward to those benefits again. Hopefully, I can stick to this and make it my lifestyle. Anyway, I was wondering whether anyone ever suffered from SAD and had good results because of BTD?

The BTD really can help with our emotional well being as well as physical well being.  Many of us can slip into depression if we were to eat avoids.

One aid for SAD is to replace your lightbulbs with full spectrum.  It seems to help me a lot.

It occurs to me, that in recent years I had developed the need to mentally armor myself as it were towards Winter time against the dimming of the light; I used to get worried by the prospect of sunset hour becoming earlier and earlier, and had the habit of calculating the number of days until mid January when the amount of light hours start to increase. A few weeks ago (after 19-20 month on BTD) I wrote to a friend that this year there's a change and I find myself quite comfortable with the dimming of the light, I even like it. It came to me as a surprise, and I didn't make any connection with BTD, but now the connection does strike me as probable.

In the wikipedia they also mention air-ionizer.

Increase your Vitamin D, and take some DHA or omega-3 supplement with it.  More wild salmon is always a good idea.

Pre-BTD it seemed like I was always struggling with depression, though it was worst in the fall.  I took medications year-round, then only seasonally, then not at all.  BTD is my number 1 tool, as well as getting out in the sun, exercise, and taking vitD and DHA.  I still have a few bad days, but it's much better than the whole months or weeks it used to last.


Type O+ blogger, secretor afterall. Gluten intolerant. With two gluten intolerant sons:  A+ Secretor 10 yo (also fructose intolerant and slightly egg allergic), and  O- 7yo.

Thanks everyone! I actually went out and bought a full spectrum natural light bulb.

yael p, I just read that bit on the air ionizer. Interesting since I used my air ionizer religiously last year, but since I moved I havent used it. It's actually still sitting in a box. Time to break it out!

Last winter I was on BTD and had no problems at all with the blues. However, the second we changed our clocks this year, I started to feel blue. Im confident that the combination of BTD, the full spectrum light and the air ionizer will do the trick.

Oh and yes I had heard Vit D could help. I should try that too. What are DHA and omega-3 supplements? Can I get those at the Bloodtype store or is that something I would find in a local vitamin store? Thanks!

DHA and omega-3 are essential fatty acids, found in abundance in cold-water fatty fish.  Or you can buy supplements in the natural food stores.

"There are several types of full spectrum light bulbs. In general, bulbs with color temperatures of 5000K or more produce light that is similar to daytime sunlight. Standard incandescent bulbs coated with neodymium are sometimes marketed under this term, although they do not have the 5000K color temperature. However, they also have desirable qualities, and are able to filter out the harsh yellow tint that is common in standard incandescent bulbs.

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a measure used by the lighting industry to indicate a bulb's ability to render colors in objects. It's why some objects look brighter in different types of lighting. The natural sun of course, produces the full spectrum, which is why we see rainbows in the sky. Bulbs with an index rating of 90 to 100 are best at simulating the quality of light produced by the sun. A light source's color temperature is another characteristic, which describes the color of the light that comes from the source."

There are several different kinds of full spectrum lighting.  Generally the less expensive ones from the store ($5 or $6 each) are the kind in bold print above;  a great improvement, but not true full spectrum.  I have many of these throughout my house.  The bulbs that are closest to natural sunlight run more expensive, anywhere from $10 to $20 each.  I have just a few of these, in my workshop and kitchen, where I spend a lot of time.  You can Google search and get more information.

I was just posting about this in another thread.  Last year I figured out that if I made myself go outside every afternoon and sit in the sun for an hour, I felt a lot better.  It's still a struggle for me, even on the BTD, but then I'm still trying to work through a lifetime of self-defeating thought processes too.   Sitting in the sun helps.

I didn't have seasonal affective disorder ~ I had year-round affective disorder! and it's done wonders for me!  But honestly, my mood was noticeably worse for wear when the weather was overcast for a few days in a row, so I guess that's a similar sort of problem.

mostly the NF-types are prone to this ; but almost infj might be hurt with this, but it comes merely of their outwarded intuition which can just overwhelm them not easy......so to know about this and getting stabilized with B-vits, magnesium, inositol & vit.D3 and sometimes even a bit of Rhodiola (can't harm )should do the trick as well; incl. some lighttherapy during wintertime

Thanks everyone! Victoria, your post on the light bulbs was especially helpful. We asked the guy at the hardware store yesterday when I went to buy new bulbs and he basically tried to explain what your post said, but he wasnt too eloquent so we werent positive we were making the right decision when we purchased the pricier bulb, but after reading the bulb's box in conjunction with your post I think we chose the right one! Now, Ill probably go back and buy a few more for other areas in my apartment! Thanks!

I hope the extra radiance helps.  

When I bought my bulbs, I was told that they last longer if they are put into fixtures that are left on for many hours.  If they are turned off and on a lot, they tend to burn out sooner, which can be expensive for you.  That's why I chose areas in my house where I tend to be for many hours at a time.

If you search online, and maybe at other stores, you may find some package deals where you can save money by buying a large number at a time.  I believe mercola.com still offers a large package.  And the store where I bought mine sold them as singles or at a case price.
