Hi Comper I find dandruff linked to wheat (gluten and/or gliadines) or /nd lactoalbumine (dairy) intolerance. My scalp is better with gluten free diet and oly BTD A allowed dairy seldom. Probalbly I should avoid dairy as a whole as gluten 100% for one year or at least six months and try again allowed dairy then, to understand if I tolerate it really . Eventually as I cannot be as compliant as this, I cannot know if the culprit of my dermatitis is all dairy, or if I can really eat the allowed dairy items. In my opinion Rosacea (one remarkable case is the red nose or face of heavy drinkers), dermatitis seborrhoica, and dermatitis herpetiformis, the gluten dermatitis of celiacs, are linked with poor digestion, stress and fungal overgrowth (this with an inflamation background is the common cause of these dermatitis); the common dandruff is well won temporary with antifungal shampoo or lotion containing Ketoconazole or fluconazole as Rosacea, but they can sensitize the skin and sometimes (especially with dandruff, after some months you need to treat it again. Hope these two cents helps Maria Giovanna |

What about nuts? Almost everything I've read about dandruff on the internet says that nuts are a common allergen that aggravates the problem.. but considering they are the good fats, do you think they might be helpful to the problem in the long run? |

For the last 5-7 year I have been getting scalp treatments at the School of Beauty... They part my hair and brush on cholesterol then massage it in put a cap on my head and put me under the dryer for 20 mins... I get one about every month or so... the texture of my hair changed about 10 years ago and my scalp has always had flakes... sometimes like snow especially in the fall and spring.
It only cost about $6.00 and it a treat that a really enjoy... one man comes about every week and swears that that is the only reason he still has some hair on his head...
Anyone know of a mixture that I could put on the ends of my hair while in the sanna... my skin loves the sauna but the ends of my hair are really taking a beating... |

cholesterol - is what they put on my hair... you could do it yourself... which I have done I just like to be pampered and the cost is so low... You can get the product a beauty supply shop.. in VA we have a place called Sally's Beauty Supply...
For some reason it's the schools or the high tech salons that provide this service... the normal beauty shops only provide cutting and styling hair.. |

Along with dryness the ends of your hair may be losing the protein that's in the actual hair shaft. Using a protein treatment bulks up hair by putting new protein into the hair shaft, but many can be drying unless followed by a moisturizing treatment. My favorite gentle, moisturizing protein treatment - what I'd put on the ends, if cost isn't a problem, is Framesi Biogenol Ultra Deep Masque (the last item on this page): http://www.biogenol.com/biogenol_conditioner.htm#UltreDeepMasque-C(I've gotten it for maybe $14 for a little/medium tub or about $22 for a bigger one.) You could just put a deep conditioner of any kind on the ends, but I'd lean toward one with some protein as well as moisture because I know hot oil treatments (of which the cholesterol you mentioned is one) can leach out color and perhaps some protein from the hair shaft. At least at some point - maybe weekly - do some kind of deep protein treatment that sits on your head maybe half an hour. The cholesterol treatment may be a variety of this: http://www.hairproducts.com/view_product_BLA-QUE101.htm...by the way, mineral oil is a big component of it... my scalp doesn't like this kind of thing but if it works for you, great. |

I have a horrible problem with dandruff. No shampoos worked. The thing I've found that works great is apple cider vinegar. You can take 1/2-1 cup of apple cider vinegar (depending on how long your hair is) and pour it over your head. Comb it through and let it sit a few minutes and then shampoo. You may need to do this 3 or 4 consecutive days before the dandruff is cleared and then just once or twice a week as needed. It worked well for me. |

Coal tar shampoo's the only thing that works for me, aside from staying away from wheat and in topicals, silicones. |

I sometimes get a dry scalp (usually from a new shampoo that doesn't agree with me) but no more flaky dandruff since using apple cider vinegar - takes care of it almost overnight for me. I usually dilute 1:3 with warm water and leave in for 2 mins, then do a last rinse. Only use it when needed, not all the time. As a kid and preBTD used to get the flaky dandruff quite often, swimming in the sea improved it (let salty hair dry naturally & wash out hours later). Coconut oil might help dry hair ends but only on the ends or it will make your whole head greasy & all hair limp! I use a leave in conditioner (for hair ends) ingred: rainwater, coconut oil, aloe vera, lavender oil, wheatgerm oil. They also make a great rinse - instead of shampoo (to alternate with regular shampoo) containing kombucha & papaya extract etc & it's really softening. Don't think they're on the web, small local herb manuf. I reckon we O's would have more than our share of dandruff! prob from lectins trying to get out... :8 |

I stand corrected on the cholesterol, I thought for certain it was Kolestral by Wella. I wonder how long Queen Helene's had her product out? |
