A quick question concerning walnuts.  They are supposed to be beneficial for O's, but everytime I eat them, I have a gurgling in my intestines and everything gets loose.  It makes it tough to "eat right" when things go wrong.  Could I be a nonnie (I haven't done the test -but I have a lot of metabolic syndrome symptoms) and my system is not accepting the walnuts?

Hey doc...are you eating the walnuts on their own or with something.  How many are you eating at a time?  Secretor test would be a good thing to get as it would help you fine tune things.

yesss of course that might be, I do have several clients, nonnies and O'sechis' with the same problem, they merely get similar symptoms as allergic reactions = this is your own individuality which marks
*your self *...or better said= genetically determined

I usually eat about a handful at a time.  Sometimes alone and sometimes with food and it doesn't seem to matter.

I second Lola's suggestion--soaking the nuts makes them more digestible and also rinses off mold and dust, which might be causing your tummy rumbles I used to have trouble with walnuts causing some allergic reactions. Soaking them overnight and air-drying them has solved that problem for me. Might be worth a try.

I also found that more than a few walnuts didn't agree with me... & they are beneficials for everyone, I think.
We all have individual allergies/intolerances.
Also, I'll have to try rinsing them.  It could be a cantaminant lilke dust/mold.

As suggested above, soaking over night and then drying really makes a difference. But it is even more helpful for me if I then put them in my cast iron skillet and cook them for about 15 min, stirring stirring till the are more crispy. I have had none of the problems since doing this. I can only eat a few at a time, but it is worth it

Lisa--if the nuts are in the shell it's often hard to tell how fresh they are, but since they are still whole they should be okay to use.

It's nice that English walnuts come in the shell still. Black walnuts have to be shelled because otherwise you'd be putting them in a vise to get them free If you buy shelled nuts of any kind, try to get the kind in the crisp plastic bag or better yet, a can. They're usually better-protected. A regular plastic bag will permit air to get in and make the nuts stale or even rancid.

I love any kind of walnut, especially right out of the jar, but toasted walnuts sound good, too. I've been looking at the hfs but I haven't ever seen the illusive black walnut...are you sure they even exist?

Yes, they exist & the wood is what is very valuable.  Trees takes decades to produce good wood which is very expensive & of high quality.
The nuts are supposed to produce every 2 years if I remember correctly.

There are associations of walnut farmers, not huge, but nevertheless in existence.

Yes they exist, albeit I believe they are more of a specialty item.  Perhaps try purchasing them over the internet from a specialty nuts/seeds company.

Hi Mrs T O+,

Yes, definitely soaking the walnuts, or any nut for that matter, for 8-10 hours in either salted or unsalted filtered water,  rinsing them well and draining them for a few minutes, then spreading them out on cookie sheets and putting them in a slow oven (150 degres) for 8-10 hours, testing them towards the end until they are crisp, makes them more easily digestable.

Walnuts have to be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container (I use empty glass jars with their tops) or they spoil. Other nuts don't need refridgeration. My husband likes pecans and I treat them the same as walnuts...but they dry out and crisp faster than walnuts and so bear watching after 6 hours.

Learned all this from the Weston Price Foundation and the book "Wise Traditions" by Sally Fallon.

I have never heard that you are supposed to store nuts of any kind in the fridge.  I store mine in the cupboard and never had a problem.  I am pretty sure that I have never seen nuts in the shop stored at below room temperature either.

Actually, it happens once in a while that the walnuts that I've purchased in a shell turn out
to be moldy, dusty, dried out and/or shriveled up and sometimes even black ... YUCKS !!

Actually to keep them even fresher u can even store them in the freezer ... since nuts go rancid VERY quickly

We have a large english walnut tree in my mums garden- ( mine is just about to bear nuts- so I┤ll have to be patient

The nuts in a less good quality ( shells not proper closed etc ) we shell and put in the freezer or use right away.
The good ones we store in old nylon stockings on the cool loft or in the larder/pantry- in all the wintermonths
- around May they are gone
- and personally I think it is time to stop eating nuts untill sptember/Octobre when nuts arrive naturally again.
I have never had a reaction to our own nuts- but often got slightly rancid nuts from the shops.

When I buy nuts in shops I 90 % of the time, soak them in salty water  and dry them again- seem fine then
- but most of time I don┤t do that with our own nuts.

If I were a nonnie, i would stay away from walnuts already deshelled out of a bulk bin or deshelled packaged....Walnuts get moldy fast once they are out of their shell. Invest in a nutcracker and eat walnuts fresh
