Well, I actually got my test results today. Did anyone else (actually) feel excited as they waited for them to be downloaded on the Internet?
I'm not quite sure how this will 'change' my life, now I actually know that I am officially a Secretor but ......
To be truthful, I was hoping to be a nonnie, but no, just one of the 80%

Ha ha ha! I know the feeling. I had mine mailed to me. Opening that letter... I was hoping I could eat Lamb. But to no avail. I secrete, therefore I am. |

Yes, you're exactly right Olerica, it was the Lamb for me too!! I guess you are missing some meats too. It certainly is a change of diet for me but mostly for the better, I have to admit.

I was afraid to look!
But I turned out to be one of the "lucky" ones.
When I told the gal at the local health-food store (who is well versed in the BTD), she said, "I had a feeling about you!" Apparently, she had a hunch I was a nonnie, because of my weird little health problems.
Which raises the question: Why does everyone want to be a nonnie?
In my case, I already knew that I had those weird little problems, regardless of how the test came out. And I had drawn up two lists -- foods that only secretors can eat, and foods that only nonnies can eat. Boy, did I want to be a nonnie! (And I'm a vegetarian, so it definitely wasn't the lamb that did it.)
How about the rest of you? Is it all about the food? |

Oh! I actually am NOT craving lamb. I just thought it would make it easier for me living with my strapping big "B" secretor hubby. I really do well on mostly green things with a bit of rice/sprouted grains and soy thown in for good measure.

Oooh, I remember the excitement when my co-worker and I checked the web every two hours for days! I had a hunch, I was a seccie. I mean, my teeth have always been excellent, I don't have any health issues that I know of, and I have no reactions to almost any food (except mussels - blech! ) I had a hunch hubby was a nonnie, and I was right. When I have one flu, he has two. When I have one cold, he has three. He didn't have good teeth as a young boy, and he has allergies. I was a liiiittle unsure about my co-worker, because she had several health issues, but she turned out to be a scretor, too. (She's just a type O who has been a vegetarian since she was 8 years old!!! )
Quoted from Carol the Dabbler
Which raises the question: Why does everyone want to be a nonnie?
Heh, my co-worker was almost crying, when she got her answer. She so didn't want to be a nonnie. Don't know why, really, but she certainly didn't! Hubby seemed almost a little offended, when I told him his status, but when I told him all the benefits he had being a nonnie (he could have tomatoes) he was OK with it. Besides, I find the B-nonnie diet easier to fit with a O-sec diet. I was thrilled to be a secretor. I was happy to be able to have a little more grains than the nonnies - I was SO tired of the restrictive Atkins regime. (Turned out I still have to watch those starches, but if I keep oat and spelt as a weekend treat, I'm OK) |

Well I was really worried to be nonnie- but I have good teeth and I am hardly ever sick- so it was not a surprise. however I would have loved to have some more fun beneficial fruits; blueberries, figs, cherries etc - SO when they are in season I just change into a nonnie and eat LOTS of them |

Hey I can have Lamb?? I never even bothered to check because I thought I could have nothing of meat that was not from poultry. Guess I will be at the Toet-anch-amon restaurant this weekend for some shoarma (kabab) that they make with Lamb meat here. weeeeeeee!!!!!!! Oh and for the rest, I am totally okay with being nonnie, I can have coconut, tomatoes, Mango's all things I absolutely love. Okay so I can't have sugar. I can live without. |

Now Sandra, did I hear you mention Lamb Kababs!!!! you know that is just my favourite thing. Fortunately, they are nowhere to be found in Almeria, not Shish anyway. Still can't believe I'm this secretor person - I've always had allergies, teeth could be better etc.
Ah well, life's tough!! (no LAMB) At least I know that Tomatilla is eating my share - prefer to chew it myself.....but... thanks Tomatilla, very kind of you.
Well, I'm in for more excitement. Posted off my husband's test today, so will have to wait about 3 weeks for the results.
Which is the best book for the most accurate food list for this secretor??? |

I think being an O nonnie with extra allergies bummed the HECK out of me. I mean, no sugar, no maple syrup, absolutely no cheese. It sounds like the food list for A nonnies is better than O nonnies! Anyway, what we are is what we are....but I'd bribe the gods to be able to have sugar occasionally.
Not thrilled about the health stuff, either....but it could be worse. That is, I could have NOT learned about this and continued to add health problems (like my folks, whom I suspect to be nonnies, too)! |

Where is the list for those of us don't know our status but have a hunch? Is the list in one of the books? I am curious to know my status, but it is very expensive to have the test done and shipped from Canada. Cheers! |

The most up-to-date information is on the typebase4 on this site. You could look at the differences in the food values between secretors and non. But it's no guarantee, of course. |

WAH!
I have bad teeth... always have.
I have allergies... always have.
I did well on "nonnie" diet for over a year. From that I learned I can cheat and not drop dead on the spot if I eat tomatoes or lamb or black tea. I used to love black tea... I find I don't care for it anymore.
I don't think I can give up tomatoes. I would rather have salmon over lamb.
It's back to mind games for me. OK I promise no tomatoes for two months.
No promises on lamb until I finish up what I have.
At least I get corn. I can't go to a Mexican restaurant and NOT do the tortillas. OH WAIT! and dip them into the WHAT KIND of salsa????? Major bummer! |

There is a Lewis genotype that does secrete, but Dr. D recommends that they eat as a nonnie. The A2/A1 thing could also have some influence. You might consider having the full serotyping done. |

Apparently blood donors are told their blood type in some detail, at least by some agencies. So check with your local Red Cross, blood bank, etc., to see whether donating a pint might be worth your while. (And speaking of limited funds, I've heard that some places even pay you money!)
Or was it you who said they were not able to donate blood? |

Gee, the only way I can do Mexican is fajitas, no tortilla, with lettuce and salsa as sides. I'm not complaining (much) but I do miss my burros and tostidas. Not to mention guacamole and chips. Or tamales. Or cheese sauce. Or enchiladas. I guess I'm getting the point across.......... |

Good question, Janet!
Page 44 of the Complete BT Encyyclopedia lists a reference that seems to show the term 'secretor status' was in common use in the medical field back in 1972. |

Just like cybertooth, I was also very surprised to find out I was a secretor. One of the main reasons I started on the BTD was because I was so prone to urinary tract infections. I also get colds a lot, have allergies, got cavities a lot as a child, etc.
So, how and where do you get this Lewis serotyping done? And what happens if someone gets back a status indicating that they are a secretor who should eat like a non-secretor? Does this mean that they should eliminate all foods that neither secretors nor non-secretors should eat?

You can get a full serotyping done from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. You can contact them at 480/970-0000. Testing includes: ABO type A1 or A2 subtype (if needed) Rh +/- Lewis type MN type The result of saliva secreter test is the determing test, if there is a conflict between the saliva secretor test and the Lewis type test, as to whether you should follow the secretor or non-secretor food plan for your BT. |

Just like cybertooth, I was also very surprised to find out I was a secretor. One of the main reasons I started on the BTD was because I was so prone to urinary tract infections. I also get colds a lot, have allergies, got cavities a lot as a child, etc.
Gail
Gail How long have you been on the BTD? When I had my son and me tested I was surprised that he was a secretor because of his bad teeth and slower recovery time from colds. I recover faster and I’m the non-secretor. Since we started our reformed eating, neither of us has been sick in January. With Chicago’s warm cold rain snow winter this year, it is surprising. So the longer and stronger you maintain the BTD, the more you’ll see your symptoms disappear. Arlene |

Don, do you have a reference for this?
Quoted Text
The result of saliva secreter test is the determing test, if there is a conflict between the saliva secretor test and the Lewis type test, as to whether you should follow the secretor or non-secretor food plan for your BT.

How about this.
As Peter has indicated in the past, he puts nearly all his LDN patients on the nonsecretor diet. In fact, Marshal is the only LDN I have ever heard of who has produced a positive secretor results through the saliva test. Now you see that Peter's office gave those instructions precisely because the saliva result is the ultimate determinant even in very rare cases like Marshal's.
Since you obtained a secretor result through the saliva test, there is no need to go further to the Lewis test; as you see by the above, the saliva test rules.

The tomato thing is bad, as in so sad. I am an O sec, but can't eat the lovely things because of arthritis, anyway. I loooovvvve them and wish there were some version of them that I could have....non found yet. I tried the carrot based sauce that is in the recipes somewhere, and it was ok in chile, I have doubts about spaghetti. Jayney-0 |

Makes it kind of difficult to dine at a mexican restaurant! Corn, tomatoes, tortillas, avoid beans, cheese, etc..... I miss mexican food but I don't miss the way I used to feel. |

Sorry about the above post - I'm trying to work out how to do a 'quote'!!!
Anyway, to add to the above - Oh, Peppermint Twist, you are so right - 'thin feels soooo good!!' I've 5lbs to go, so will let you know how it feels!!!
Have read the posts re saliva testing - yeah, reckon this secretor had better shut up and just get on with it!! |

Actually, what I said was "Nothing tastes as good as health feels". It was the commercial for Jenny Craig that said "Nothing tastes as good as thin feels." I much prefer the word "health" because "thin" can feel wonderful or horrible, depending upon how/why ya got there. |

Not quite. There is still the individual. Within the framework of BTD, he can still have different preferences from you. He can still have foods that will work a bit better for him. The balance of food types and portion sizes will be different. In a general sense you are eating the same diet. By and large eating the same menu will be good. Just be aware that his needs individually will merit consideration. Not to be eating pork, or something like that, but within the framework of BTD. All in all, congrats on the good news!!! |

It's actually working out pretty well that Hubby and I are both A's, even though he just (yesterday) turned out to be a secretor (as we had guessed). He started out making funny faces at what I was planning to eat, and having a lot of ready-to-eat cereal for his own supper. Then he gradually started trying what I was fixing, and I gradually expanded my repertoire. Most days now, he eats whatever I fix -- and on Sunday, he even baked the spelt bread while I had a nice bath! |

Lloyd, that's exactly right. We already know about his individual needs! Actually, joking apart, he can eat things which don't suit me and me not him. Anyway, it's a good start for us both. We both have a couple of kilos to lose, so the race is on.................. |

I don't want to be a nonnie but I probably am. There are already so many foods I can't eat and I'm not a raving fan of avocados.
I finally purchased a secretor test but I am not sure about mailing it in. I live in the boonies so I have to find out if there can be a pick-up. |

The directions make a big deal about shipping your spit off the day you collect it, via next-day-air, and if something comes up, you need to refrigerate it until you can ship it via next-day-air. Maybe they're just covering their rear, but it sounds like it actually could make a difference. Considering how much the test costs, plus the fact that you're planning to base how you eat for the rests of your life on the results -- I'd say ship it next-day-air if at all possible, and if that service is not available in your area, phone the lab for advice. Not meaning to worry you, Victoria, but maybe you're actually a secretor, and the reason your test came out nonnie was that all your antigens died on the way to the lab. (Just a thought. I specialize in paranoid.) |

When I told the gal at the local health-food store (who is well versed in the BTD), she said, "I had a feeling about you!" Apparently, she had a hunch I was a nonnie, because of my weird little health problems.Carol if I might be so bold, what wre your quirky little health problems that led someone to believe your were a nonnie? Ummmm. Not to rain on anyone's parade, but when I got my secretor test the instructions told me I had to either send it out on a Monday or a Tuesday so that the spit would make it to the lab by Friday. Otherwise, the spit would not be any good. It had a packing slip in it for DHL to pick it up and I checked off the airmail box when I sent it as it was going from Ontario, Canada to Nova Scotia, Canada. I spit on a Monday and it went out the same day. Debra |

If I weren't so lazy, I'd go looking for what I posted in answer to the same question on another thread. I can't say for sure what she had in mind, but it could have included any or all of the following: Spastic colon Food allergies Teeth full of fillings Brain fog Lack of energy/motivation Respiratory congestion Most of the above has improved to one extent or another since I started the BTD. (My fillings haven't fallen out, though! ) |

You're welcome! In order to quote you, all I did was click on the Quote button at the top of your post, and it automatically took me to the More Post Options page with the Blah Code all set up for your quote and the box. I just typed in my reply underneath your quote. If I wanted to focus on one particular portion of a quote (especially if the post was a long one), all I'd have to do is delete the rest of the quote -- being very careful not to delete the Blah Codes inside the square brackets at the beginning and end of the quote. It's very easy to delete one of the square brackets by mistake, which is why you'll sometimes see something that's trying to be a quote, but it says either "[quote=somebodysname" at the beginning of the quote (without the square bracket that should follow "somebodysname") or "/quote]" at the end of the quote (without the square bracket that should go before the "/" sign). Sue -- if you mean my previous list of health problems, I'll look later tonight & see if it's still around. |

Yay!
If you click the Modify button of your first try, you'll see that you accidentally deleted the Blah Code at the end of the quote (compare to your second try, by clicking the Modify button on that one). Once you have a little more experience with the Blah Codes, you can just hit Modify and edit your post to fix any errors that you've spotted. (I bet nobody always gets it right the first time -- just count all of the revisions on, say, my most recent post!)

Quoted from vjmiyagi
it's not just the tomatoes.. it's the dang chili peppers that I love as well.
Can I be a closet nonnie?
Count me in. I haven't been able to give up the cayenne at home or chilis when I eat Mexican or Thai. |

Tomatoes and peppers are only Tier Two Avoids for A secretors. If you're basically healthy, an occasional Mexican meal shouldn't hurt anything.

Well, I've officially been a sectretor for nearly 2 months now and I have to say it's not so bad. I've managed to wean myself off the foods not so good for me and into a pattern of real healthy eating. My stomach feels all the better for it and some weight loss, as a bonus. If I do eat something not too good, but enjoyable (treat!!) I know it's not the end of the world and take it for what it is.
Who would have thought it - I was so disappointed to find that I was a secretor but it really is OK!!! |

Hi all,
I just got the books from the library. I also bought the small A food guide and the encyclopedia. I will be recieving my saliva test in a few days. I just wanted to say hello.
I feel that I am probably a non-secretor. I have just been treated for my 5th intestinal infection. I have been extremely ill with attacks of vomiting, diarrhea, shaking and palpitations that last 6 hours. Toward the end of the attack I get short of breath. Benadryl helps. I have figured out that it is reactions to foods. My doctor said that I have leaky gut. I am extremely intolerant to molds and yeast so I don't eat those things or dried fruit at all.
I also have one of the genes for celiac disease,(found out about 2 years ago in my search for health.) I was a vegetarian for 10 years before that, but did not do well. I suppose that it was because I was eating wheat and dairy. Now I am only eating eggs, meats, veggies, fruits and nuts and feel much better. I started taking betaine after reading the book. It has helped my bloating after jsut a few days. I am almost 5'9 and weigh 128. I can't gain weight to save my life.
I am also the typical personality for A, sensitive, need a lot of quiet, love alone time, would rather listen than talk, don't like crowds. I never watch disturbing movies, I wouldn't be able to sleep and would think about it for days!
I will make sure that I meditate and do yoga every day. I am looking foward to learning a lot about my blood type!
Have a great day. Sincerely, June
P.S. Where do you get the lists of secretor versus non-secretor foods? Thank you. JV |

I’m not sure which books you have, but you can find out through them. For individual foods and to resolve a conflict between older and newer books, look at the type base on line. http://www.dadamo.com/typebase4/typeindexer.htmYou can also order a wallet card when you find out your secretor status. Many of us make individualized Excel spread sheets. |

Well, a very big welcome to you June and i hope you will enjoy participating in the BTD forum.
So sorry that you have so many health issues but I think that's one of the reasons that many people come on board!
I just know this way of life is going to help you, along with all the good advice which will soon be forthcoming.
You are right to go straight ahead and find out whether you are a secretor/non secrector - this will help you fine tune your eating habits.
Once again, welcome.....

June welcome! typebase has all food values, and you can always check it when in doubt or want to create your own list.
check Dr D s health series books, also, for more targeted information, once you get your test results. |

Hi June, You are really on the right track, and it's great that you've already done your secretor test. I would also guess that you are a nonnie, but sometimes we get surprised! I think most of your questions will be answered in the book LR4YT. It explains the secretor status, along with much more detailed information for each blood type. And it has quantity and frequency recommendations for foods, which has been very helpful for me in fine-tuning my diet. It's a good thing that you already know you are celiac, so you don't continue damaging your gut. There are definately some things that will help. One is Ghee, and the NAP formula, Intrinsia. Lots of people use it for healing leaky gut and improving intestinal health in general. Click HERE. |

Thank you everyone for your replies! They were very helpful.
I'd like to know what people eat for breakfast. I have been eating eggs sauteed with veggies and a little olive oil. I think that maybe I have been eating too much protein. I haven't had grains for breakfast because of the celiac thing.
Victoria, I haven't done the test yet, I ordered it.
Thanks again, have a great day. Sincerely, June |

Hi June, Thanks for the clarification. Soon, you'll know, and then your meal planning should get a little easier. You could start a thread on What do A's eat for breakfast? . We all like to talk about what we eat!! |

Thanks Victoria, Did you get the results on the Web? Also I am thinking of doing the test Friday since I am off. I have too much to do tommorrow to do the test in the morning. I don't want to get stressed out. I don't see any reason that I couldn't send it out Friday, unless someone else knows something I don't. Thank you, June |

The saliva should arrive as quickly as possible, and if you send it through the post office, it will sit on Sunday, wherever it is. If you send it another way, like FedEx or UPS, you should find out if it will travel over the weekend, or just sit somewhere. That is the only consideration. You want your saliva to still be fresh enough for an accurate test.
And, yes, I got my results online. |

Junevarn, I sent mine by mail from Spain to America, which probably took one week to arrive - the company said that was not a problem, and I received my results on-line.
Like you, my husband is also the same as me....A+ secretor. At least you can both work towards the same aims!! |

Thanks everyone, You all are so supportive. Yesterday and today I did food combining and feel much better. For breakfast today I had mund dahl, yellow split peas that I cooked with ghee, onion and a little spinach. It was great. I am going to eat mostly beneficial foods since I have had a lot of health problems. I had a snack of pumpkin seeds that are roasted and have garlic and turmeric on them. I get them at Whole Foods. I will have a stir fry tonight with broccoli, green beans, onion and spinach and will add either turkey or salmon. Have a great day! JUne |

I live in South Africa. It is not possible to have secretor/non-secretor status tested. I did, however, go for an allergy/food intolerance screening and from that info I could determine that I am a non secretor. (I am AB) |

Welcome to the BTD Forums.
If you click the Member Center button at the top of this page, then click Avatar Settings on the left side of the new page you will be taken to a page where you can select a blood type avatar. Having a blood type avatar is an easy way to share your blood type with other forum readers so that they can respond to you in a blood type appropriate way.
You can add information below your avatar setting, such as Rh+/-, A1 or A2, MN blood typing information or whatever else you want to, by going to the Profile Information section in the Member Center and typing in the Personal Message box.
You can also create a Signature of any other information you want to share that will go at the bottom of every message you post.
I also encourage you to indicate your gender, age, and location in the world in the Member Center Personal Information section, Signature, or Personal Message box once again so that other members will be able to better respond to you. |

Hi, all! I have just returned after a long hiatus; recuperating from surgery (to remove cancer), and delighted to be back on! I've been following the BTD to the best of my abilities, and would like to perfect it, though I can't recall whether I tested secretor or nonnie. (My memory has been affected, unfortunately.) I don't even remember my previous screen-name, so I reregistered.... Anyone with metastitic thyroid cancer here? I'm having difficulty with the synthroid regulation, side effects, etc. and would love to communicate with others about it. Thanks all for being there! Looking forward to being back, anytime I go to the library. (No computer in my home). Take care all, and best of health to you! |

Hi Diffy, and welcome back! Considering your recent health challenges, it could be worth the effort and investment to get your secretor status checked again so you can sure. Dr. D has a wonderful book on dealing with cancer through the blood type diet and particular supplements. The diet for non-secretors is different enough that it helps to have the information.
When I had breast cancer 7 years ago, I followed that book 100%, and stuck with it for a couple of years afterward. |

In The Genotype Diet book, Dr. D mentions that Rh- and Non-secretor status are common in areas of the world where people seem to live forever. Explorers seem to live long and have a tendency to be Non-secretors. However, it seems that Non-secretors seem to suffer more health problems than secretors do (as was mentioned in Live Right 4 Your Type). Is it accurate to say that Non-secretors live longer even though they suffer more health problems? |

We tend to suffer from lower grade health problems that keep us honest but don't outright do us in- as long as we follow the BTD, GTD or Swami, that is.... |
