Quoted Text
Part of the FDA's responsibility to the public is to ensure that food in the American food supply is safe. Therefore, due to the risks associated with consuming PHOs, FDA has issued a Federal Register notice with its preliminary determination that PHOs are no longer "generally recognized as safe," or GRAS, for short. If this preliminary determination is finalized, then PHOs would become food additives subject to premarket approval by FDA.

Good news, but man do the wheels turn slowly!  Maybe in 2040 we'll be waving goodbye to HFCS.

I can tell by your thread title that we are talking transfats here, but I'm just wondering:  what exactly does "PHO" stand for?  I don't think I have heard of that particular acronym before.

edited to add:  Oh--maybe I should have clicked on the article instead of just reading your quoted bit from it before asking that.  It stands for "partially-hydrogenated oil".  Got it.

I recall reading somewhere that hydrogenated oils were initially designed for soap making, not for consumption.

Eh, they'll just switch to whatever cheap oil is currently available.

In US McDonald's a Canola/soy/corn blend is used for the cooking oil. All fried menu items in McDonald’s U.S. restaurants are now 0 grams trans fat per serving. This includes French Fries, Hash Browns, all non-grilled chicken choices and the Filet-O-Fish.

I think that originally trans fats were developed in France to offset the scarcity of animal fats for cooking in urban areas. I imagine that once the 'trick' was developed it was turned to other uses.

I came across a BBC article which contained what I found a surprising fact.

Quoted from BBC article

According to the FDA, trans fat intake among Americans declined from 4.6g per day in 2003 to around 1g per day in 2012.

There is no explanation as to how this came about but I would assume it to be a combination of less manufactured content and hopefully people detecting the TFA's by reading labels.
