But scientists are discovering that — to a surprising degree — we contain genetic multitudes. Not long ago, researchers had thought it was rare for the cells in a single healthy person to differ genetically in a significant way. But scientists are finding that it’s quite common for an individual to have multiple genomes. Some people, for example, have groups of cells with mutations that are not found in the rest of the body. Some have genomes that came from other people.
The other people part is beyond transfusions and so on. Think motherhood:

Women can also gain genomes from their children. After a baby is born, it may leave some fetal cells behind in its mother’s body, where they can travel to different organs and be absorbed into those tissues. “It’s pretty likely that any woman who has been pregnant is a chimera,” Dr. Randolph said.

So cells live on after? And I'm part Armenian now - like Kim Kardashian! Oh I can hardly wait for my second marriage to a redheaded B...... I'll be a glorious Silk Road then oh yes AB is for me! And no wonder we feel so strange throughout pregnancy |

Love the idea.
I myself had a scary experience regarding my blood type (who else but me). During my army service I had my blood tested for blood type (I think for donating blood) and the result was B. I got it written on a special card. When I was back in civil life, I had my blood type tested again for blood donation (I used to donate blood every year), and at that time the result was O. Also written in a card. Thank God I didn't need a blood transfusion between the two tests. Since then I had my blood type tested several times, and every time it came out O.

My best bet is that the mis-typed you the first time.
So I might be walking around with bits of my ex- husbands' genetic material? Scary thought! |

This has always been my guess and my hope. 99.99%. The last 0.01% is for the scary possibility that they switched samples and labels in lab. On a second thought I raise it to 0.5%. |

This fascinating subject also makes me shiver and get covered with cold sweat. I was thinking about embryos that don't make it. Maybe that is what happens with lots of them. |

....this should be sobering reading for ladies who opted for abortion, shouldn't it. No doubt about it - pregnancy changes EVERYTHING. In more ways that man can see with the naked eye. |

My mother doesn't because she never had boys. Now I do from my son - who is an aggressively good tennis player! QUESTION: if the cells came from a type O, or B, and live in another blood type liver.....what happens? |

Good question. Maybe the body just accepts it. I think there are many things that we may never know. Kinda like the girl who got a liver transplant from an O+ (she was O-) and it supposedly changed her bloodtype |

Even for women who never intentionally aborted, many pregnancies end VERY early; often before the woman is even sure she's pregnant. Cells from a boy embryo could still be in her body, even if that boy never lived more than 2 or 3 weeks and she thought she was having a late or heavy period.
Right before I got pregnant with Hannah, I was SURE I was pregnant. I had the morning sickness and fatigue. Then my period came on time- but was very heavy and full of "clumps" (which, since age 35, are normal for me, but that was very unusual for me at the time.) I still don't know if I had a very early miscarriage or if I was sick for a couple of weeks followed by a wacky cycle. |

I'd assume that since type O is the universal blood donor, cells from an O might be well-tolerated. But I'm sure it's more complicated than that. |

“It’s pretty likely that any woman who has been pregnant is a chimera,” Dr. Randolph said.
So maybe O cells coexisting in liver, and some B cells come along and attach to the O cells..... |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lydia_FairchildI watched this documentary years ago called I Am My Own Twin. The documentary featured two women in different situations, including the 52 year old kidney transplant recipient mentioned in the original link Lloyd posted. The link I left was about the other chimera woman. In this woman's case it was eventually believed that she was a result of two eggs that fused days after conception, carrying two different sets of DNA. |

So thought provoking!!! I agree with Seraffa about abortions.... I suffered an early miscarriage years before my sons were born. Science, humans, biology, faith...intriguing and awesome. I am so thankful for Dr. D's curiosity and hard work!!!! |

That is like "vanishing twin" phenomena, sometimes the remaining twin has two sets of DNA if they weren't identical. Fascinating stuff! Given my sons are Ao's I hope they gave me some of their cancer protecting O DNA |

Interesting. I had a customer come to a Trade Show we were doing (we are Dr D'Adamo's distributors for Australia and New Zealand) in Auckland and he told me he had been tested in the army, as you had, and was an O blood type but would like to have it checked again. I did his test and he tested as an A blood type. I suggested that he go to his Dr and get a lab to do the test for him. My testing turned out to be correct and he was in fact an A blood type. |

My cranio-sacral practitioner asked me during one of the first treatments if I had a twin sister. I never had, yet as a child my imagination was busy with this possibility. In my childhood I read a story about a girl imagining for a long time that she was having a twin sister, was talking to her and playing with her. I gather that such children stories are actually anchored in the reality of the early embryonic stage. I prefer this explanation to any psychologic explanation. |

How interesting about the army blood type testing mistakes! I could have sworn my husband was an O based on his body type, personality, need for regular strenuous exercise, etc. etc. He kept telling me that the USMC told him he was an A, so that is what he was.
I made him get retested anyway. And he actually is type A. He is also a nonnie like me.
He still is awfully O-like. I am sure that one of his parents was an O and perhaps one was Ao.

ginny, Yup! Exactly what I have observed! I truly believe that one does/is able to inherit so many things from the opposite blood type parent. Even though I got my A from my Mom, she is an Ao, I am soooo my Dad's daughter in soooo many ways more than I am like my Mom He is an O- So, Mom an Ao, Dad an O, I am an Ao and my husband is an O. Our youngest son is O in every sense possible!( For starters, he requires lots of meat and strenuous exercise.) |
