I think Dr. D already suggested that the blood types and genotypes causes people to have different types of gut flora (that is why he has blood type specific probiotics... DUH!). The NY Times published an article today where scientists discovered that there are 3 different types of gut flora so far. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/21/science/21gut.htmlI came across the blood type diet while researching stomach ulcers and h. pylori issues (dad is O and has them... surprise surprise). There was research done at a medical school where they found blood type Os were more prone to stomach issues and that is how I found Dr. D's site. It is sad that the "science" & "medical" community does not do more interdisciplinary research and networking. They would really benefit from Dr. D's research. |

I read an article about this on Live Science. They didn't say if there was a connection between the enterotypes and blood type. I'd like to know if there is! Perhaps in future versions of SWAMI there will be an option for it, but I doubt the test will be available soon. |

Passionprincess, thanks for posting the website. Sounds interesting. If some of you read the full article, I would be interested to know about the three types and their implications in terms of our guts work, since I have no way to access the article. |

speaking of the probiotics. does anyone know which ones should be avoided for different blood types? the info page about Dr. D's probiotics says that some should be avoided but which ones? (If I could take the type A probiotic it wouldn't be a problem, but I have fructose malabsorption and can't have the inulin or artichoke fiber). I'd like to find a blend containing the probiotics in the type A formula, but I don't want to get a blend that also has probiotics that I should avoid. |

Food for thought: If you are taking a probiotic that is not blood type specific you are creating an inflammatory reaction in your body. This article says that---- Gut microbes are specific as blood types. |

I wonder if you could use a Polyflora A capsule to innoculate home ferments; either yogurt or cultured vegetables. Then, the "good germs" would multiply, giving you what your gut needs, but you wouldn't be consuming significant amounts of inulin or artichoke fiber. How much fiber can there be in a single capsule? |

I would suggest using the polyflora A probiotic I believe that the bacteria in the the probiotic will use the inulin and AF right away leaving no trace in the gut.

It might be that the actual bacteria in Polyflora-A are a problem for type O. |

I wish it worked like that, but unfortunately it doesn't. |

This is a good possibility. I started making my yogurt from Polyflora B back in the winter. After the first batch, I have used a starter from each batch to make the next. After a short time, everything else that might have been in the capsules is no longer there, only the living micro-organisms. |

That's awesome...but how do you do it? I'd much rather do fermented vegetables than yogurt (not a fan) as ruthiegirl suggested, but I really don't know anything about fermenting. |

I also have a question for you: have you actually tried the polyflora A and gotten a bad reaction, or are you avoiding the product because of reading the ingredients?
I'm wondering if the small amount of fiber in each pill is actually enough to be problematic for you. I don't know a great deal about fructose malabsorption, but I do know that with lactose intolerance, many individuals can handle a small amount of the offending substance without getting bad reactions. I'm not sure if FM works the same way or not. |

I have pretty severe fructmal. I haven't tried polyflora A specifically, but I haven't been able to handle a product with FOS yet. The amount in a pill may seem small, but it can cause big symptoms Since I haven't tried polyflora A, I could just to see, but I definitely have to choose carefully where my money goes. Now that I have a backup plan (using it for fermenting), it wouldn't be a waste if I can't take them so I'm more inclined to try. |
