I’ve been traveling for work for the last 3 weeks.  Nov 4-6 Kansas City; Nov 7-15 Kona Hawaii; Nov 18-22 Washington DC.  I am home in Chicagoland this morning where it is 23 deg F.  My fingers are rough and raw.  They feel like sandpaper and look like they are ready to start bleeding.

Now that I’m home, I can regulate my diet, soaps and lotions better.

try covering your hands with olive oil at bedtime and put on some cotton gloves (old ones that you don't mind getting messed up). Sleep overnight with the gloves on.

Diaper rash medication is good for the hands.
When they get better, use it or any cream you like ahead of time to avoid getting rashy again. Yeah, we sure got hit by some lousy weather, didn't we?

I watched Hawaii 5-0 last night. It was a decent substitute for the real thing. Hehehehe....

But I'm sure you enjoyed Hawaii!!!      Tell us about it in Little Fishes or Fresh Start.

Try using any natural oil on your hands after every single time you wash them. I keep oil in the bathroom for that purpose.

I started using this a few months ago for my dry hair.  It helped.

I've had 2 people in person tell me about the gloves.  I put Jobaba oil on them last night & they look better this morning.

I’m pretty sure the cause of the hand rawness is the pink soap in the DC office bathrooms.  My face didn’t get affected & it was exposed to the cold too.  In my own Chicago office, the ladies in the engineering section put their own soap in the smaller bathroom in our section.  I have to go back to DC in January.  I’ll just was my hands in hot water & forget the soap in the office and airports.

You could also carry a small bottle of soap with you. My daughter did that one year in school- this was pre-BTD and she was much more reactive (behaviorally) to artificial colors and fragrances in soaps at the time. We got a 1 or 2 ounce bottle of Dr Bronner's castile soap and she used that at school. It stayed in her backpack when not in use.

I'm going back to DC in January.  I just have to remember to put it in a plastic bag when I go through airport security.

The gloves & Jobaba oil are helping.  My hands are almost healed.  A couple more nights will do it.

Yeah, some soaps are worse than others.  I was recently in the hospital and that soap in the bathroom was aweful.  I only washed my hands after going to the bathroom.  Of course I was going about every hour or 2.  I was in for a kidney stone.

The only thing I've found that helps me is eucerin at night.  I know it's not super duper healthy.  But it's thick.  And it stays put and rejuvinates my hands while I sleep.  Any other lotion I've tried burns.  I'm kind of sensitive I guess.

Good to hear from you!
I was wondering about you for a while, like if those relatives came again this year & how your health is.
I hope your kidney problem is settled. Remember that magnesium might help. Mr T had a kidney stone before I met him. I think it is more painful than labor!

ya, the soap. I have forgotten the ingredient but I worked with a woman with an allergic reaction it ot. her hands were way beyond chapped. they looked like they had been boiled until she fingured it out. I recommend pure shea over lavender oil till it wears off. could take a couple of weeks depending on how bad it got. I use shea on my feet when they start to dry out around the toes. usualy works over night and I do it about once a week before bed with socks. should work on the hands too.

I'll give Eucerin a try.  They sell it at Walgreens.  Maybe I can find a small bottle to take with me vs. the lotions in the hotel.

If I didn't use lotion on my hands/fingers after each time I washed my hands ( or when they feel dry), my skin would be awful and the ends of my fingers would be cracked and painful.

I get the big tub of it, but then I've gotten it in a smaller squeeze bottle too.  Not so big.  At Walgreens.

I wish I could recommend something more "healthy".  But I've tried different oils too and they just don't do much for me.  Olive helps a little.  But not near as well as eucerin.  I should try some other things too.  I've never tried this "shea butter" that someone recommended.  I also thought of trying just cow's butter but haven't tried that yet.

ABJoe mentioned "utter balm" in the last thread we had like this and linked it.  Might be worth a try too.

At least I think that's what it was called.  I forget what company though.

Udder balm works well, but I find it leaves a film. I like the Super Salve Company's Calendula balm...
