About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I got pretty sick. I was so congested that I couldn't breathe through my nose while lying down and I had a very sore throat. I ran a fever for a few days. I had some vertigo, which commonly happens when I'm congested, as fluid goes from my nose to my eustachian tube.
It's been several weeks, but some of the symptoms aren't going away. The fever and sore throat are completely gone. I'm not as exhausted as I was at the peak of the illness, but I've been fatigued. The severe congestion has lessened; I'm not coughing up large quantities of thick yellow mucus anymore, and I can breathe through my nose most of the time.
But the congestion isn't going completely away. I have this constant post-nasal drip that goes into my lungs. It's not thick or hard to cough up, and my lungs don't feel congested. It's more like the feeling when some water goes down the wrong pipe and you cough a lot for a few minutes. Then for the next half hour it's mostly gone but there's still a tickle in your throat. It feels like there's a little bit of water in my lungs that won't cough up easily. There are times in the day when this is more intense and times when it's less intense, but it's always there.
Taking benadryl at night dries up the mucus enough that I can breathe through my nose while sleeping. I can't take it during the daytime because it makes me sleepy. I suspect that sudafed would dry up the mucus just fine, but I have a history of high blood pressure (currently in the normal range) so I can't safely take that drug. I tried taking guaifenesin, but it didn't do me any good. The mucus is already thin enough- it just won't go away.
I've been following my SWAMI, using a neti pot once a day, eating lots of garlic and onions, and taking elderberry and probiotics. I'm trying to get enough sleep, but it's hard when my children need less sleep than I seem to need right now.
Is there anything else I should be doing, or something I have been doing that I should stop?

Ruthie, Sounds like the something similar to what I had. I didn't think it would ever go away. This is the first week in months that I've actually felt better. I felt like a mucus machine... I took Chloe's advice and took Sovereign Silver. The big bottle that I ordered after the smaller one was used up didn't come with a dropper and it recommended a couple of tsp a day for immune support. I ordered it from Amazon.
One of my friends also has it and she finally went to the doctor. Dr. told her it was allergies which I find hard to believe.
Hope that you are better soon. It's been a long tim. Jane

I just placed an order at Swanson vitamins- I wish I'd thought to ask for supplement advice first. I really can't afford too many of Dr D's supplements, so I usually see what he recommends then put it together less expensively on my own.
I'm also not sure how many protocols I can be/should be doing at once. I'm still doing a combination of the anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritis protocols (they overlap quite a bit) due to the lower back pain. My back is a lot better but nowhere near 100% and I don't want to discontinue those supplements (cayenne pepper, ginger, and turmeric from the spice cabinet plus boswellia in pills.) I don't want to start on too many different supplements at once.
And wow- 10,000 iu of vitamin A is a LOT! I get plenty of beta-carotene daily- I just quickly checked how much vitamin A is in carrots, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes, and calculated that I'm eating more than 10,000 iu (ie, 200% of the RDA) daily.

Strange, I've gone through something like you but on a larger scale but the same time frame. I was pretty stuffy and had bloody mucous and green globs for a week or so. No fever. But was run down. And it has lessened but I keep getting drainage.
Can you eat grapefruit? I think they are great for getting the sinuses to clear. Although so do garlic and onions. But yeah, I think Vit C might be in order. Berries? Some frozen blueberries? I put mine in the oven on 250 for a bit and let them just start to get soft. Yum. I swear when I ate them one night it made a huge difference with my sinuses.
I'll say a prayer for you.

Yup, I can eat grapefruit, but I haven't had any in a while. I also eat a tablespoon of rose hips each day, in tea, for the vitamin C. I do have blueberries in my freezer.
My problem is that I don't do well on fruit. The sugar messes me up, and try as I might, I can't seem to figure out when to eat fruit that doesn't leave me craving carbs for the rest of the day.

About the betacarotene some people can´t convert that very well
- is it possible for you to get real A vitamin Retinol ? from food ?
From my notes from a very interesting speak:
Groups that might have problems with converting
Babies and smaller kids diabetics If you have thyroid problems Liver problems unbalanced gut flora If you eat a lot of nitrate and nitrite If you eat a lot of betarotene espeacially without fat. and a english survey showed that aprox half of the women couldn´t convert beta into retinol.
Situations that put stress into you A levels. High protein / low fat diets cold weather fever and other disease Hard physically work exposer to pesticides and other toxins in enviroment stress.
I can´t recall but can you do cod liver oil ? What about liver more ghee / butter ?

Ghee and butter are superfoods and I'm already having about a tablespoon a day (in spite of SWAMI's recommendation of 1/2 tsp a day.) Both liver (various forms) and cod liver oil are black dots. I have CLO in the house because my son takes it, and as a special treat for myself I bought 3/4 pound of chicken liver last week, made it into chopped liver, and ate it all within a 24 hour period. I wasn't feeling particularly good that day either.
I get plenty of fat in my diet, and never eat orange veggies without fat in the meal.
I could get 10,000 iu of vitamin A daily via CLO fairly easily, but I hesitate to consume a "black dot" for supposed health benefits. I wish I knew the reason CLO was a black dot for me- for example, if the problem is that it normally has too much vitamin A for the amount of vitamin D it contains, then taking it now would probably be a good thing. But if it's a black dot for some other reason, I wouldn't want to make myself weaker.

Mucinex will help thin the mucus. Perhaps also add saline spray for around-the-clock use.
The sinus infection I had all December and most of January required rounds of two different anti-biotics plus prednisone, aside from the Mucinex, neti-pot, and saline. I hope you fare better than I did.
My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant. Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index. DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.
That just makes no sense to me. 1/2 teaspoon of oils a day??????????? How can anyone survive on that.
I think it's one area swami seems strange. I guess maybe it's calculating all the oils you get from the meats... But that seems WAY too low.

I tried following SWAMI recommendations for fats and oils for about 2 days; then I got too weak from hunger. I now completely ignore that part of the portion size recommendations, but try to follow the recommendations for all other foods. It's always a challenge for me to keep my portions low enough. I think I've gotten plenty of fat so far today: 3 whole eggs cooked in butter, then mixed veggies cooked in ghee, then for lunch turkey meatballs with some leftover veggies (some of which were roasted in olive oil), then a bowl of veggie/bean soup (veggies roasted in olive oil before water and beans were added), then a rice cake slathered in butter, and just now a can of sardines in olive oil.
I feel like I'm choking on all this watery mucus- taking a drug that thins it further truly doesn't help me in any way. At least not in any noticeable way, and my instinct is always to not take drugs unless I really need to. Potential harm outweighs the benefits when there are no benefits.
I'm still debating the merits of taking cod liver oil for the vitamin A, at least for a few days. Would the benefits of the vitamin A outweigh whatever harm the black-dottedness might cause?

I went ahead and took the CLO today. I figured it would be best absorbed with the fatty sardines I just ate. I'm not sure if I'll continue doing that after today.

We like mullein tea, as mentioned in the pulmonary support protocol. Also, slippery elm is something else I would take. Both have helped myself and others in my family.
ISFP Sirach 37:27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.
I has something similar. I had to do a second round of antibiotics after the Zithromax.
I'm finally feeling like I can go back to covering court proceedings now, but I still haven't gotten over it completely.
Mucinex never did it for me ruthiegirl. Made me feel icky. I took astragalus (sp?) Nettles, MSM, Boswellia, Probiotic O, Deflect and Proberry. Didn't seem to touch it too much.
Knowledge is power. SWAMI gives you the diet that will unlock the key to better health, and it's all based on your unique individuality.
I also have something that has settled in behind my breastbone (pressure, tightness). Some mornings I clear out quite a bit from my lungs; other mornings, there is nothing. I can't tell if I have bronchitis, new asthma or what. I don't feel sick, but not quite well either. I fought a very mild flu off and on for the past month - never really sick, but not up to my usual good health. This has been going on for at least 5 weeks. Strange.
This all happened after some dental surgery which involved a round of antibiotics - the first I've taken in a decade.

Victoria, That's EXACTLY what happened to me - all these antibiotics for the dental implant surgery. At one point they even had me take steroids and antibiotics - I fought it but they insisted I needed it. I had the same tightness under the breastbone and enough mucus to fill a good sized stadium for over a month. I'm finally feeling better and wouldn't you know I have a dental appointment today - just a cleaning though. I still have a minor amount of mucus but that may be because I've been eating too much dairy. The liquid Mucinex helped with the chest congestion and allowed me to sleep. Jane
If I followed my SWAMI recommendation for fat, I'd be starving and living on carbs. I agree... the recommendations make no sense to me either....
There's no way 1/2 teaspoon a day would be enough. You can't even cook with that little amount. I get a tablespoon and try to stick to it. But I'll tell you what, the two times I went and stayed at a resort, with good food, they use more oil than I would ever. And I ate it and I really think it made me feel better. I didn't feel like I needed my CoQ10 as much. Or any of my vitimans. Like the increase in oils gave my body more nourishment. It was really good food I was eating. For example, one meal was a nice big cod fillet and they roasted butternut squash and zucchini. And red peppers. The veggies were on the bottom and just swimming in oil. Which I'm pretty sure was olive oil. I never did ask about what oil they use. I know it wasn't coconut because I requested they not use it. But anyways. I didn't sit there and slurp up the oil, but I ate the veggies.
My point is, yeah, I'm not sure where these oil recommendations come from. Because I feel like I do better when I get more. But when I'm at home, I find myself trying to stick to the tablespoon a day thing because I guess I'm afraid of over doing it. Either way my cholesterol has gone down eating more red meat and eating more oil than I had in a long time this last year and a half. I would think an O would need a good amount of fat.

JJR. I have to agree with you...But, besides just measuring fats and oils from a spoon, we all get nuts...and many of us get avocados for which portions are very generous...plus a specific amount of fat grams would be found in fish/meats/eggs...Given I eat eggs rarely and would be allowed 7 per week and don't eat much cheese but could have as much as 3oz many times a week, what I do is eat more nut butters and cook with more oil...
I think when calculating everything that complies individual SWAMIS, all fat grams from all foods were computed....and became a particular percentage of our caloric intake. If your cholesterol profile has improved then you're doing a good job of eating right....As far as not feeling satiated, the one food group that I seem to need to adjust is fats....More fat is better for my mood, my skin, my satiety and my immune system...but in all reality, perhaps I'm not eating more fat than SWAMI recommends, I've merely changed which foods groups I'm getting my fat from. More plant fat than animal fat. I honestly don't feel I was designed to be eating a lot of animal fat anyway.
