Does anyone have any hints for improving vericose veins without surgery? I've heard of some herbs, but I don't know if they work. I don't sit for long periods of time. I walk a lot. I take a baby aspirin every night. Dr. D says blood type A is thicker. The veins in my legs are getting worse and worse. It used to be that you could only see the big blue ones. Then there were were bumps you could feel. Now you can see lots and lots of red ones, almost as if my legs were transparent. My legs look like a road map and I can't wear dresses or shorts. Starting two days ago, the back of my legs started hurting, almost as if they wanted to cramp. I don't eat added salt. Any ideas that could help? It could be from my heart not pumping right, or faulty valves in my upper legs, or ????? |

It's about the valves in the veins, they wear out I've found that lots of exercise helps. Walking is especially good to get the muscle pumps (muscles help move the blood back to the heart) working. I've never found any supps that make any difference. Calf raises are also good, anything that keeps the legs moving. |

I've been having issues with my left leg that has a band of blue varicose veins on it. The right leg is OK.
Grey Rabbit has one idea to help and that is walking, exercises that use your legs according to what you like to do as exercises. Also I've been putting my legs against the wall in the AM and PM for at least five minutes. It helps to getting the circulation going again
There are a few herbs to help and one of them is Horse Chestnut. I've been using it on and off and it does help the veins. Do a search because I don't think you are supposed to use it for long periods of time.
Good luck. Let us know what you find out.

Elevating your legs above the level of your heart will also help a little, takes the pressure off and makes it a bit easier for the blood to travel back to the heart. |

The raised bed method actually raises your head, not your feet. |

And about the raised feet version, aim for / angle, with legs fully supported with a large cushion, so that there is no stress on the back of the knees, no hyper-extension of that joint. 20 minutes every day - late afternoon or early evening. It has stopped the addition of new visible veins along with relieving that end-of-day aching in the lower extremities.
Bouncing on a mini-trampoline is helpful for improving circulation, along with plenty of walking, as others have said.
Sufficient amounts of vitamin C (look for non-corn based - not ascorbic acid) and bioflavanoids.
Dr. D's Connectivar has some good supportive herbs. |

Thanks, all. I do walk a lot on my treadmill and around the house. Don't sit down much. I also use my stationary bike a lot. I have a recliner. I think I will put a pillow on the foot rest and prop up my feet whenever I sit down. I just ordered some horse chestnut. We'll see if that helps. I already take 500 - 1000 mg vitamin C a day for my allergies. I've never had a blood clot, but 23 and me said I am more than 44% at risk for one in my legs. |

Like several have said, elevating the legs is important. I used to put them up against the wall when I worked at the bakery. Also avoid any constrictions like tight clothes or socks. I had a small vein showing in my ankle area that I noticed in 1995, so I have been very careful to not wear tight socks there(or for very long if I have to wear them). It is about the same these years later. Also take vitamin E & selenium. Those are supposed to be great for the vessels(as well as against cnacer & heart trouble). They say that type O doesn't need E, but I feel I need it. Since you are A, you need it the most. I hope these hints help! In general, a good diet will slowly help many things. Best wishes! |

Thanks, Mrs T - I haven't taken E for a long time and I've never taken selenium. I will add those to my "arsenal", along with horse chestnut, and see if that helps. I appreciate all the answers from posters. I'll try all of them. Something has GOT to help. |

I take Gotu Kola herb for my vein... I have one big bulging vein in my left leg above my knee, it can get so painful that I can not walk on it. But after a week on Gotu Kola the pain goes away and after two weeks the swelling is gone and the vein goes back in to hiding... By week 3 I have some really vivid ugly dreams and I have to stop taking it. I seem to get flair ups if my lower back gets out of line. I use Organic India Brahmi-Gotu Kola Formula. |

DL, I really think you should have a doplar screening on your legs, especially to check out the valves. As GR said, they do wear out. I am so glad I went to a specialist and he helped without surgery. Walking was his first order! I couldn't wear shorts for years....not anymore!!!! I think I told you before, mine were ugly, bulging, and warm to the touch. The doctor said it was a combo of heredity ( my Dad's mother had horrible road map legs),( my Dad has the same exact bad ones as I had).. and lifestyle as in too much standing or sitting ( I stood all day as a dental assistant). Since learning about ER4YT I believe my past eating of dairy and wheat didn't help! PM me if you would be interested in his name..he might know someone in your area that has a similar practice. |

D.L. If you can handle one more suggestion, please take a look at the following sites. I just bought Solgar's Rutin 500mg and took two. I read that it was given to people in England for varicose veins. Sometimes the Europeans, the Eastern parts of the world, etc. seem to be far ahead of us in trying more natural remedies sooner than the USA. The following sites were extremely informative to me because they list some of the uses helps varicose veins, blood circulation improved, etc. l. Rutin benefits/ehow.com 2. http://www.buzzle.com/articles/rutin-benefits.html The fourth benefit listed on this site says "It also maintains the level of collagen in the skin. This prevents signs of aging such as wrinkles and skin damage. *For that reason alone I would take this supplement! Good luck. There is help out there. Joy |

Thanks, Joy. I read the link and it makes sense. I'll try that, too. All you people are wonderful. I feel like I know you guys in person, somehow. |

The following is just my experience and opinions. My varicose veins started to ache about 30 yrs. ago. The pain completely went away by drinking comfrey tea. (Leaf only) Read up on asprin consumption. Dr. West at http://www.healthalert.com publishes a monthly news letter with some excellent info regarding the harm taking a daily asprin can cause. I know A's have thicker blood but you can take Dr. D'Adamo's advise by drinking warm lemon water first thing every morning instead. No side effects. How about that? Wishing you much success. |

Thanks, Enobattar. I actually have a current subscription to Dr. West's newsletters, but I don't think I read about the aspirin. I'll go on his website and check it out. I wonder how the warm lemon water can help the varicose veins. I bought some Rutin today to try, also. |

I am wondering if a topical application of trehalose would work. I have twenty years of experience of varicose veins, but no experience in getting rid of them. |

My heart doctor told me to take an eneric-coated baby aspirin every day, which I have done for over a year. However, I'm re-thinking his advice and may quit. I do take fish oil every day. |

Please try it, Paul, and let us know what happens!! Your blender would make it finer than flour in nothing flat, and it would absorb much easier. |

I talked to a woman yesterday whose husband had some kind of surgery on his really terrible varicose veins. I asked if it hurt. She said she thought the Dr. put him to sleep, so she didn't know, but she said the recovery was very "uncomfortable" whatever that means. I DON'T WANT SURGERY!!! |
