Don't know if I just ate too much food or it was the pumpkin bread yesterday, but had the worst backache and then bloating, had to lie down for hours. Then when I went to get up, it felt like something popped just under the rib on the left side. I have had this struggle with diverticulitis for the last couple of months, but it has been lower on the left. I had just finished the second round of antib. and then this. Does not seem to be an infection, no fever, no diarhea, no nausea. This morning it has abated considerably, and it makes me think that it was too much food for the inflamed colon. Does this sound to be right? Cannot get a hold of the specialist to make an appointment, so will wait til monday. Think I will stick to broth and soft vegetables for the next several days. I do appreciate all your thinking. |

I would go to a pharmacy and get some fleet items and use them.. to clear the rectum colon area.. trying to leave the material in a s long as possible lying on the side so make sure you are comfortable.. I am not talking about a high enemas, but clearing the way to allow things to move down.. I would do that before I would push more stuff from the top..
the reason you have pockets is that the walls are brittle or stretched and so any pressure from above will just add to things.. clearing on easy path on the left side would be my suggestion.. do it several times gently rather then once harsh.. |

have a look at this thread, http://www.dadamo.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?m-1319768008/I got positive results by eating fruit first thing in the morning, eating zero grain, eating small salad with soup spoon of oil, salad should include OKRA just one a day. evry day increase you cold pressed oils to a table spoon a day. reduce water as you reduce grain. continmue this for a week. a salad a day, no grain and note water only helps with constipation if you have grain, and grain makes it all worse. short term use a husk if you must , but to fix it for good you have to cut grain, drink less water, eat a little fruit, some raw salads, and eat sensible and completely compliantly. don't forget the oils!!!! sorry to repeat everything , but need to get it across. read book "fibre menace" or as it title is not for UK market "Fibber menace" - weird spelling. but eat for you type too, (very important. love and peace and |

I am certain it was the pumpkin bread, as I have not eaten anything that heavy for a long time. It was pretty much gone yesterday, and things seemed back to normal. I have ordered the intrinsia and fucos plus, and am still doing the glutamine water twice a day. I am a bit afraid of the fleets thing, as I worry about damaging any of those diverticuli areas. This last location was different than the last, more up high under the rib, even just above the hip. Almost makes me wonder if it was the pancreas. I am thinking too much, but at least it is gone, and I have learned more about this wonder of aging. Who would have thought it would take so much figuring! and PC, is that the vegetable okra that you are talking about in your salads? |

Yes must be Raw Okra, one or more per person on salad.
salad, includes
half carrot, i eat the other half while making salad lol one celery stalk small ampunt of red pepper (capsicum) 1/4 or less spring (salad) onion. (emily has only green part as lower in fructose) very finely chopped. 1 Raw Okra lettuce to taste. one heaped soup spoon of Basil Pesto (olive oil, garlic, [small amount of perorino cheese or Parmesan] sea salt and Basil of course)
you can put more of the Okra in to suit you taste
Tris - check email for some alternative views on constipation also. A bit of a read but worth it. |

I will try it, have only had okra cooked in a gumbo, but I am ready to try anything. Thanks for the note about the book. It definitely makes sense. Had my yogurt and prunes for breakfast, and will lay off the hemp powder for a while. Think I will get out my juicer again, too. |

Yogurt, milk yogurt? I didn't think Hunters could have yogurt. I would highly recommend that you cut out the yogurt if it isn't on your good list. The hunter I live with has a lot of trouble when she eats regular yogurt. |

I am a nonnie and try to eat no grain, but it does pop in every now and then. I try to drink a lot of water and now I read that with no grains, water does not help with constipation? Oh my! My mind is spinning. Please elaborate! |

It's a theory that many have agreed with over the years. more recently people recommend bran and water to help constipation. There seems to be little logic ro indeed evidence behind this. After reading the book "The fibre Menace" or fiber if you can't spell lol (joke ) I'm convinced that any grain (perhaps most) will make constipation worse in the long term, and like wise with too much water. goggle gut sense and see what you think, but i have done an lot, and i mean a lot of research around the subject and find the reverse works for me now. I should point out that most of my thinking is aimed at O's, but not exclusively. eat right for your type, drink a sensible amount of water ans eat an adequate amount of beneficial oils. fibre from fruit and vegetables is fine. |

Dietary fibre, eight glasses of water, and a low-fat diet — the sacred cows of nutritional dogma — break natural bowel movements, and cause hard stools, irregularity, constipation, or constipation-predominant IBS. I used to be fine with loads of fibre too but it catches up with you, and the too much fibre and too much water will get them in the end.
I'm convinced of it. |

Also - diets high in "irritating" fibre especially if only taken spasmodically, serves to clean out the recent food, but can leave impacted faecial matter on the colon wall... |

No, not at all... Irritating fibre are things like psyllium husk, wheatbran, senna etc & then it does depend on BT of course.... |

The pumpkin bread that I overindulged in on Thanksgiving day and the next, had a cup of flaxseed powder in it, as well as two cups of spelt flour. I am sure I ate half the loaf over the two days. I am sure it was just too much at once, If I had had only a slice each day it probably would have been fine. So quantity of anything I think is important, probably even water....we live and learn. |

Before BTD I used a colon cleanse capsule with both senna and psyllium, wow was that not so good. I think it had aloe also. Just like Possum said, it did make things move, but it wasn't comfortable so to speak. Now I stay far away from such things. I love my polyflora, and larch arabinogalactan. Also Deflect is great for the gut!!!! My swami allows me lentils. I just want to say that I love the french puy green ones for fiber occasionally. I mean I will make them with onion & garlic, have some nice white fish over it that's been sauteed. Really does the "fiber" trick. |

I read something very important recently. When people have infections they often end up low on magnesium.
Low magnesium can equal constipation especially when consuming anything with doses of calcium in it (beneficial cheeses). The people may also be lower on zinc. I have found cal-mag-zinc supplements to completely cure my constipation. However they do not cure the poor gut flora I seem to get from perhaps digestion not being correct and ending up with too much bile in the wrong place. (get some burning action as things leave) It does not make me more consistent with shape and form.
I could not over-recommend omega 3 rich food for better intestinal cardiovascular health. Also turmeric, lots of it. If you make rice add a spoonful or two in the cooking process (but be careful if it boils over it stains). Turmeric is perhaps one of the best things for colon health bacteria wise.
Stay up on things like lemon juice too as the blood will get better quicker with it.
Inflammation could be from digestion not being proper... like how I was talking about inappropriately passing bile along. |

That is good information. I usually take extra magnesium, as I seem to need more. Get muscle cramps when I don't take it. I am about out of my calcium, and will look for the one with mag and zinc in it this time. I love turmeric, and had not thought of adding it to rice. Good idea, tho I have been limiting rice. Maybe I will look for the capsule form. I also think that I need enzymes, as when I eat meat, I feel like it is stuck in my upper gi tract for hours after. I take so many things now, that I have to look at my list, or I forget. The fish oil I take in the am, but the evening one I easily forget. I can't imagine that in ten years I will even remember to look at the list, ha. |

This all brought up one more question. Is it ok to take the glutamine water in the early am with my thyroid med, the probiotic, and the astragalas? All at once? The later in the day things, I think I have a handle on, but want to be sure that these three things do not contradict each other. Thanks. |

PC, The only prescription that I take is levothyroxin. Was on Armour, but my insurance is not paying for it any longer. So for supplements I am taking the glutamine water twice a day, vit C, cal/mag, astragalas, fish oil, ALC and alpha lipoic acid, B complex, probiotic, magnesium, D3 and B12 sublingual, just started taking MSM and Colostrom and have ordered Fucose and intrinsia from this site. Oh, and I used to take enzymes once a day or so, but am out right not..... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Forgive my memory links for http://www.drugs.com/pro/levothyroxine.htmlre supplements why not just take Dr D's Polyvite and Phytocal that has vit c, cal/mag astragalas, vut b, b12 d3 , b12 ? it just simplifies everything and means also that you are taking less of the capsules containing the supplement and less binders etc. Possibly coincidence but when i simplified and started just using Dr D's stuff things got better. humour me and keep a food diary and email it to me after a week. oxo also intrinsa has magnesium in it already. Intrinsa is a great by the way. |

I understand about simplifying, but some of those vitamins and minerals are way lower than I want to take, or some that I don't want. And to take the recommended dosage, those would be way over budget. So I think I will just stick to the ones that I ordered for now, plus the polyflora, which I want to get in the next few weeks. I would be happy to send you my food lists by email, I would be grateful for your time. Have not checked the magnesium in intrinsia yet, but I need to take 250 mg twice a day for the cramps. I noticed decades ago that I was deficient in that one. Used to have lots of muscle spasms.....ok, just looked, and I could cut back on the magnesium to one pill, and only at night. So that is fine, the less I have to take the better..... |

did you mean food dairy - it's helpful it's actually exactly what you eat on a daily basis day by day including amounts of oils, water, bed time awake times, moods, feeling. the more complex or detail the better. not just a list of foods that you can eat but don't necessarily eat.
