I suffer from Hyopthyroidism so constipation is a big problem. I am taking 50mg synthetic hormone daily but still continue to be constipated. I had discovered an Aloe Vera & Liquorice supplement that works wonderfully to alleviate this and keep my bowels moving regularly but see that Aloe is on my avoid list, as is senna. I am taking a magnesium supplement and lots of fibre in my diet but I need additional help....does anyone have any suggestions? |

Drinking plenty of water, prunes and citrus helps me out. Lately I've had to be careful not to have that problem. |

been experimenting with intestinal cleansing and found that a combination of bicarb of soda (one teaspoon in a glass of water, followed by a chaser of mms cured water) followed 6 hours later by glass of iodine water 15% 6 drops) works as one serious laxative whether it was designed to do that or not lol. |

This is interesting.. but the iodine might be a concern as the thyroid meds might take issue?? interesting but the taste ?? |

Not long ago I was asking these guys about constipation. Someone suggested to soak flax seeds in water overnight and eat them and the gel water the next morning. It is a grand cure. I can tell when I forget. I think my flax seed bag says 1:9, as in 1 tablespoon flax seeds to 9 tablespoons water. I also used Konsyl, which is like Metamucil only has no sugar. Good Luck. I hate to be constipated! |

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - already being eating the soaked flaxseed in the mornings - but to no avail (1 month so far) Have tried psyllium husks (which is the ingredient in Konsyl - also to no avail, and I'm exercising and drinking plenty
Can't get kohlrabi where I live - but I guess I could try the bicarb of soda - though not sure I'd like to be taking that everyday.
On 400 mg of Magnesium for 1 week now - have heard it takes a while to kick in - anyone know how long? |

Can you tell us what you do eat on a daily basis?
Senna ( as does other long term laxative use) causes changes in the colonic cells, Melanosis Coli.
It can be seen clearly on examination with a colonoscopy. |

flax seeds, phyllium, all seed type fibers constipate me terribly. Just eating my hunter vegetables and magnesium at night are all the Dr ordered. Works wonderfully! Even thinking about bulk other than veggies has me turning. Believe it or not, too much sugar of ANY kind constipates me as well |

Thinking in terms of a less pill/ supplement mindset takes time and will require looking microscopically at your diet.

bE SURE YOUR HOME FOR A COUPLE HOURS IF YOU TRY THIS ONE
SEA SALT FLUSH 1 tablespoon sea salt in 2 cups of warm water, stirred, have 2 cups of cold water ready to drink. drink sea salt water down the hatch then follow with two cups cold water, generally works, within that time, and you know when you are finished when it feels like you are peeing from the back end everything you drank plus elimination endings.
Safe to do daily, if necessary. |

If I'm eating compliantly I don't usually have a problem but when I try to be a smarty pants and step outside of range too far I must increase my magnesium. I've taken 2-3 more than usual, until things start to happen. The doctor (I found on the BTD reference page) told me to add one magnesium a day until it works. Don't think I ever had to go above 3. |

Is constipation in someone with low thyroid necessarily a magnesium deficiency? I'm not sure loading up on magnesium if you're constipated is always the way to go... I know the thyroid requires iodine...and when I started taking Iodoral (tablet form of lugol's solution), my cold hands and feet disappeared and my constipation problems disappeared. When I used lots of magnesium (prior to the Iodorol), I found myself feeling lightheaded, dizzy and weak, even though as a laxative, magnesium citrate in large quantities did relieve my constipation. I personally would eat as much fiber as possible....and drink lots of fluids....prunes, berries, a variety of nuts and seeds and make sure to get a proper amount of essential fatty acids. And have your iodine levels measured. If you're low in iodine, your thyroid isn't getting nourished properly. Generally people with low thyroid who are constipated are still low in the raw material that supports good thyroid function. http://health.learninginfo.org/iodine.htmhttp://chetday.com/iodinesupplement.htm |

I'm not sure Mg has anything to do with thyroid, but for me it has all to do with regularity. As far as loading up on fiber such as nuts, seeds, prunes, no good for me. Some "bodies" don't like that kind of fiber and it took me a long time to figure that out with all the "eat fiber for constipation" recomendations. Everybody is different. veggies are my ticket, nuts and see are definately not. green veggies, artichoke and celery are my everyday staples, never fails |

magnesium seems related to the thyroid in the rat. http://jn.nutrition.org/content/77/4/455.full.pdfThe thyroid requires many nutrients for proper function.. I was just suggesting that people with low thyroid function (of which constipation is one of the symptoms) to have their iodine levels checked. Magnesium deficiency still might exist. I was horribly constipated when I followed the A type diet. I'm perfectly normal following SWAMI. I gave up gluten grains...I feel having more normalized gut flora helps with everything! |

Goldie, iodine not advised for people with thyroid issue, but the taste is fine. like drinking chlorinated water. We are used to filtered. |

I had chronic constipation until I started this diet. I used to go only 1 time per week if i was lucky. Since starting this diet I go every day and it has made my life so much better. Keep eating the foods in your list of beneficials and stay away from all avoids. Kiwis are a beneficial for me and they work very well but sticking to the overall diet is just as important. |
