I just finished reading a book which speaks highly about a liver\gallbladder stone cleanse. The books states that most people have liverstones and that they are responsible for lots of illnesses (fatigue, problems with digestion, skin problems etc). The author recommends a liver\gallbladder stone cleanse which is quite involved. It requires a few days preparation with apple juice, then you need to take epson salt and olive oil with citrus.

Has anyone of you done such a liverstone cleanse? And if so, what did you think of it?

There are some very long threads dealing with the subject matter. Would suggest taking a look at them. This one might keep you busy for awhile.

That said, Lola's advice is good.

Thanks for the link, Lloyd. I finally read through all of it. It seems everyone is positive about the liver/gallbladder cleanse. Mybe I should take the plunge and give it a try.

I go to a Acupuncturist who was suggesting I consider doing one of these, but recommended waiting until spring.  I think with the idea that in the warmer weather it is easier on your body to do something like this.  Good luck.

We are having summer here. Would that be ok, or should I wait until spring as well?
The main thing that worries me is that a stone gets stuck somewhere and I end up in hospital

If warm weather helps, then summer sounds like the ideal time to do it...  Lin was stating that waiting was recommended for her as she is in the middle of winter, with cold storms happening regularly...  Although, if you are concerned about moving too much, use the gentle cleanse described in The Genotype Diet book.

Yes I agree with ABJoe that summer should be a good time to do the flush. I must admit I'm nervous about a stone getting stuck so will use a gentle flush.

I did the heavy duty liver/gallbladder cleanse 13x over a year, trying to keep my gallbladder.  I had a stone stuck in the common bile duct before I started the cleanses.  Had to have it removed. Having had the duct cut to get the stone out may have allowed me to pass all the other green marbles when I did the 13 cleanses later.   I did 3 day fasts with apple juice and then the epsom salts and oil & lemon juice.  I felt good doing them and passed lots of green marbles each time, but in the end I had to have the gallbladder out anyway.  In looking back I wonder whether I should have done it that way.  For one thing the apple juice is an Avoid for O's, but at the time I felt it was what I had to do for the gallbladder.  Between the fast/cleanses I had blender drinks for breakfast and salads & fish or meat for my other 2 meals.
What is it that leans you toward wanting to do a liver/gallbladder cleanse?  You're probably better off, like Lola says, to just start with the gentle cleanse in the GTD book.
Nearly forgot, and as for doing it in warmer weather, I got so darn cold when I was doing the 3 days of fasting.  I did do it through the winter too, but if you have the choice, warm weather would be better.  I've also read that the liver benefits from a cleanse in the spring and fall.

BCgal, thanks a lot for sharing your experience!

The reason why I was thinking of doing the liver/gallbladder flush is that I think I don't absorb my food as well as I could and that it might be due to gall/liver stones. I also have low Vitamin D although I am in the sun quite a bit. Again, I think it could have to do with the liver.

13 cleanses sound a lot. Why did you need to have your gallbladder out? Were there still stones in them after all the cleanses?

I did a one-day version of that a few years ago, where I ate no fat all day, and no solid food afternoon, and then the epsom salts/olive oil/grapefruit or lemon juice at bedtime. The next day I pooped out a lot of gunk and eased back into normal foods by lunchtime.

I only did this after an ultrasound diagnosed "fatty liver and gallbladder sludge." I was comfortable doing this flush at home as I didn't have any stones big enough to see in the u/s, so I figured nothing would get stuck. I doubt I would have done this just as a precautionary measure without having some lab diagnosis of liver issues first.

I did this flush a total of 3 times. I did two  between my first and second liver/gallbladder ultrasound, which revealed my gallbladder was now clear but my liver was still fatty. The third flush made no difference in my liver (as shown my a 3rd u/s), so I didn't do the flush again- I figured it had already done all it could for me.

All of this was before I found BTD. If I had it to do over again, I'd do the gentle liver cleanses from the GTD book rather than this harsher version that I'd found online.

Since that time, I lost a lot of weight (first with low-carb and then with BTD and SWAMI) and my last lab tests showed that my liver enzymes are now in the normal range. It was elevated liver enzymes (blood test) that led my doctor to order the ultrasound in the first place.

I continued to have painful attacks and I was planning on a 3 week backcountry canoe trip which I didn't want to have an attack on.  I guess I figured that if all the effort I put in over that year hadn't prevented it, then I might as well get it out.  I still continue to take supplements for my liver though because of all the research I did made me see how the liver affects so much of our health.  I went to see this fellow that does "live blood cell analysis" about a month after I had it out and he said that this bacteria I was constantly battling (been seeing him for 7 years) had now disappeared.  So as much as he's into natural health, he said it was a good thing that I got it out.
I had also learned through my researching, that the liver can hold HUGE numbers of stones, and as I passed one batch, more would roll down into the gallbladder.

I've done the cleanse that you mention Curious 4 times once a year to rid my gallbladder of stones that started to come up from when I was pregnant.  In 2007 however, after a cleanse I was in too much pain, was rushed to hospital by ambulance and the specialist advised to remove my gallbladder as the stones would just keep reoccurring each year.  When it was removed the Specialist told me that the gallbladder was extremely inflamed and just as well it was removed or it could have burst causing other complications.

I would highly recommend you first have an ultrasound to determine what size your stones are before proceeding with the cleanse.  My stones where only as big as the nail on my little finger, so it was no problem flushing them out each time.

Unfortunately stones do reoccur, no matter what you do, they are most likely hormonally driven not by the diet one follows.  This makes sense to me as I was following a Mediterranean diet, not a fatty diet that many professionals say is a large cause and it they first came about when I was pregnant not before!  I must say that since having my gall bladder out I've never felt so good + following the BTD I feel great

All the best.

I did the gallbladder cleanse once a few years ago.  It seemed like a positive thing, except that the epsom salt felt very harsh on my body.  If I ever repeat it, I think I'll forgo the epsom salt and use chanca piedra (stonebreaker) herb and gold coin grass for a few months, then plenty of apple juice for a few days before.  Then a good dose of regular magnesium from the health food store with the olive oil/grapefruit juice.

Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.
Let me not pass you by in quest
of some rare and perfect tomorrow.

Thanks everyone!

I like the idea with the ultrasound, I'll get my doctor to refer me for it.

As for the gentle cleanse in the GTD book: I bought the book when it was published and, because it did not feel right with me, I gave it to someone who might have more use than me. I think I might have to get it back to check how to do the gentle liver cleanse.
