For me, significant desired weight loss has always been achievable by diet alone, as long as I made up my mind to do it. I've noticed on the Forum that most assume an intensified exercise/fitness program to be absolutely essential to weight loss, and, when I've mentioned that it isn't the case for me, folks seem skeptical...?

I'm wondering: Since this is obviously a minority case, is it B related? Is it more common amongst Nomads? The B/sec/Nomad combination is found in only about, what, 5% of the population? That might explain it.

naw, i have not been strick or regular about exorcise myself. i have lost a dress size every year sence starting this program. i feel i might excelorate it if i did work out but i have so much to do already that exorsice gets left behind.

I have not been working out at all, and I've lost 15 lbs since starting BTD last September.  I put a few of those back on over the holidays, but I've lost most of that again within a week and a half, just by following my SWAMI recs.  I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop...holding my breath here.     I do need the exercise, though.  It makes me feel really great.  Boosts my metabolism, but always makes me hungry as a bear afterward, too.

I don't get much exercise and I'm underweight.  Mine's got more to do with a inbalance in the gut.  But, I'm sure that not eating junk food has something to do with it to.  Sticking to good food and food that is probably "right" for me, probably causes less weight gain.  Plus, I think my metabolism is pretty high.  Whether that's right or wrong, I don't know.  But I'll lose weight in my sleep.  Literally.

So far I have done little in terms of exercise and am still loosing weight.

Each strech of weight loss requires me to either tighen up my dietary practices or to supplement more.  I am anticipating lossing more weight and have started taking the Weight Management Pack.  I have also changed some of my regular eating.  I still have a couple days worth of avoids that I am weaning myself from - slowly.

My goal is to get my exercise-less weight loss to where I will find exercise possible, frequent, and motivated by natural desire.  As far as I can tell the Pack is a great boost my energy levels - this is just Day 5 and I am taking only one each per day.

The tide is gradual - just as it begins it's biggest change.


My weight loss goal: 220 lbs.  A 6'4" dyslexic oddball: the size of a line-backer, the silhouette of Winnie-the-Pooh.

O hunter hubby dropped a lot of weight even not being on his excercise routine. Was kind of on a SWAMI Xpress I did. Went on a pro SWAMI by Dr. Nash. A few supps. But the main thing was she got him off the wheat. I told him, but he said he needed the certainty of her SWAMI and to pay her to tell him not to eat wheat. That one change was the most significant for him because he was already doing a lot of the right things-- veg, red meat, etc. His energy and brain power shot up significantly after this change.

He does so much better with excercise. It's a logistical thing right now. He will get back to it, because it is true for him that he functions so much better with intense excercise.

I am a supertaster. My concern is more on the maintaining weight side and making sure I don't drop it. Which reminds me, I need to get off here and go eat!

I've been an on and off again avid exerciser since my teens.  I don't do it for weight loss, i do it because it makes me feel soo good!.  I think it's most important for O's to exercise.  I have a very hard time losing weight and i probably wouldn't exercise if it didn't make me feel so good.  Maybe i've been doing it wrong all this time, maybe i need to stop exercising then i'll see some major weight loss!. (ha! ha!)  I actually can't see my life without exercise, though i'm not athletic by any means!.

never really been an "overweight" person even when the dr scales said i was obese. i still luaph at that. two years ago i was at 185 at 5ft2in. no one would have said i was obesse. even wearing a size 16 most people (espeacaly around here) would have said i was maybe just a bit heavy. giggle alot of them would have concidered me a lightweight. (obessity is a real problem in arkansas)
i feel better for exorcise but i just have so much ealse that needs doing i often don't find time for it. oh and the last pants i bought here 11/12

OK, a B, here, San j!  

It's about food for me, and not the amount of exercise I do. I keep a good balance between movement and resting, work, tai chi, restorative yoga, work, walking, meditation.  I have not increased my activity level and neither am I inactive.  I am definitely not a "heavy" exerciser.

For a decade on the BTD, I only lost a few pounds.  At least I stopped gaining.

When I started the GTD diet 3 years ago, I immediately lost 8 pounds over a 3 month period and have gradually lost a few more to bring me down to my college-age weight, which I consider my ideal size.

The biggest changes in my diet, in my opinion, was the addition of ground chia seeds and extra virgin coconut oil.

not so much when it is cold like it is now. if it is nice tomarrow i need to go out there and pull up blackberry stems sence my helper for putting the goats in the freezer is sick. i have cleaned rabbits myself but it would be nice (at lest the first time) to have the help of some one who has done goats before. i will be doing extra weight lifting tomarrow becuse i need to get both goat (three 40lb bags) and cat food (another 25lb) pluse the two loads of wood i hual in every day (say 35 to 40lb each)....i suddenly feel very tired.

I wish I was there to help you BattleDwarf, sounds invigorating!

I have a different thing going on.  My type B hubby likes long hikes and yesterday we xc skiied a little more than 8 1/2 miles.   We were going to do a 10 mile trip Sunday, then return same distance on Monday.  But after the conditions here at Yosemite,  I told him I don't think I can do it.  Trails are not groomed for stride skiers, which is what I can do, and my muscles are in revolt.  This sort of exercise is not helping me lose weight.  
I wish he would understand the concepts behind this diet, but he is into a sort of carb heavy diet when hiking/ skiing.  He looks bigger to me also......

   Weight loss is a constant struggle for me.  When I exercise regularly I find it much easier to stay compliant with my eating.  I think depression factors in there too.  When I exercise, I feel better, which makes me want to eat better.  I am definitely an emotional eater.

Have come accross tapping BCgal?

I think the official name is EFT - Emotional Freedom Technique.  When you tap yourself, you can "reset" your current emotional state.  I have tried it to calm down when I am angry and it works - even if you know as little as I do.

Young children have an "emotional attention span".  If they are crying or pouting there is a time limit for each kid for how long they can keep up the behavoir without some stimulus to react to.  We all have this, but you can short cut your emotional time limit.  The only drawback I have found is that when I am angry enought to need to do this, I am not thinking about this behavoiral escape hatch.

Maybe, if you try this, you can get rid of the emotion that keeps you eating.

Wouldn't that be nice.

I have never had to work to keep weight down.  Of course, as I was growing up, I worked enough just doing chores, etc. to maintain weight.  As an adult, I have been in basically sedentary work positions, but only gained weight when the digestion / elimination functions got so bogged down that the body had to pack the waste into fat and store it.  Now that I am getting healthier again, the junk is being disposed of and the weight is back down to less than I was when I graduated high school.

This concept may be restricted to the B / Nomad portion of me...

Now I really know the only thing consistent in life, is change.

I agree with the weight thing though.  I only put on weight because of bad food.  Exercising did nothing.

I requested and got SWAMI for Christmas.  I had to re-measure because I had tossed the original measurements, and in doing so, realized that my sitting height to leg length had changed proportion.  I can only attribute this change to healing in the lower back / pelvis allowing me to sit straighter.  Of course, my head is also healing, although my total height hasn't changed that much...  I still need to do major healing, so will probably make a note to re-measure every year or so just to make sure I'm still on track.

BCgal, losing weight has been a struggle for me as well for quite some time.  I have been preparing  for the past few weeks...buying the GTD book, taking measurements, ordering the Swami...so I can start the GTD diet.  I have prepared my meal plan & done the grocery shopping.  This week will be the first week I officially start the diet.  I am quite heavy so exercise is not on my happy list...but, weather permitting, I plan to ride my bike at least.  I have plantar faciitis and walking makes it worse.  I am also looking into a membership at a local gym.  I want to go on a tropical vacation when I lose all my weight.  

I am soooo hoping the GTD will help me...

Here are my observations, both of my own personal experience and what I've observed from others on message boards (including a low-carb board I frequented before I found BTD or this forum.)

If somebody is obese, they can lose weight from diet alone. Sometimes, if somebody is moridly obese, they may find that exercise is counter-productive at first, leading to increased appetite that interferes with weight loss. Some people are simply too sick to do any exercise at first, but then when they lose weight through diet, they're able to begin exercising.

Most people reach a certain point where weight loss just stops, even if they keep on the same diet. I personally think of this at the point where a person stops being "obese" and becomes "overweight", regardless of what their BMI is.

I lost 15 lbs easily on a low-carb diet, even without being healthy enough to exercise. Then I maintained that weight for over a year, and got frustrated (and switched from low-carb to BTD.) I still didn't lose any weight on BTD at first. When I started SWAMI, I also started on the SWAMI exercise recomendations. I easily lost another 10 lbs in a single month! Then the scale budged again (but that was clearly due to my not  being consistent about portion sizes or exercise.)

I've regained some of that weight, but I expect it will come off again easily once I resume my healthy habits. But I also expect that I may plateau again, and I may need to step up the exercise to lose beyond that point.

So, there's a certain weight that I can lose to and easily maintain via diet alone (around 175 lbs) but to  get to 160 I need to walk 2 miles, 6 days a week. To get to 133 (my "ideal" weight) I may need to walk 5 miles daily or 2 miles daily plus more intense exercise 2-3 times a week. I'm currently getting back into the "2 miles almost every day" routine, and I'll ramp it up if I find the weight stagnating again and/or when I feel strong enough to do so. Right now, 1.5 miles every other day is my goal (and is more than I've been doing this winter.)

Wow. That's not the case with me, but I can see it is for you and others, rg. I lose all the weight I need to, via diet alone. I simply have to decide how compliant I want to or can be at any given time. Exercise has its benefits, but for me, it's not necessarily about weight at all!

I have noticed that when I exercise, I do get hungrier...many times I get cravings...many times I go nuts & eat everything in sight...then feel guilty...sometimes I try again...most of the time, I have given up.  

In addition to eating better, right now I do need to follow the Swami exercise because my heart beats fast when I climb upstairs...not a good sign.  I am thinking something not strenous in the beginning, so my body does not get shocked.  My game plan is to really focus on eating the foods on my Swami...maybe drink more tea...and stay focused.

I am new to BTD and this community. I officially started on Friday and on Monday evening I weighed myself. I CAN NOT believe what the scale said.... A six pound weight loss!!! I got off the scale and back on again about four times yesterday and I did it again twice today. WOW, is all I can say... I am not an expert at this way of living yet (still new to learning it) but I am happy about the results so far. I had not exercised at all during this time however, today I start back to doing an intense workout called "insanity".  Any thoughts as to how I lost that amount of weight so quickly when I had been trying to lose weight being a raw vegan for two years? I am now 169 pounds. I WAS 175 exactly.

As a fellow type A I strongly advise baby steps with exercise...slowly adding more and varied walking, cycling and free weights...or dance around to music. At the same time follow your bloodtype or genotype diet as closely as possible! You will lose without really trying!
I believe type A needs a balance of diet and exercise to lose AND maintain a healthy weight.
Yoga is wonderful but we A's ALSO need to get the cardio in a few times a week.
(If you need motivation and like to dance I suggest joining Jazzercise classes. I've gone for 20+ years and its always new and fun!)

Oh, I forgot to mention the tea!
I noticed when I began to drink extra (hot)black tea in the am and hot chamomile just before bed..ALONG with more (cold) homemade sun tea (green with acai) throughout the day, I lost weight steadily. Just be sure to drink plain water often, too.

Although O's need exercise, I have never exercised.  I hope to make that change in the future but I'm not making ALL the changes at once.  I do find I am more active with the diet and weight loss.  I've been on the diet, first BTD and then SWAMI for 3 months and I have lost 25 pounds.  

I have about 70 to 75 pounds to go.

As a matter of fact I LOVE dancing...all kinds of dancing, especially latin salsa.  After my two sons were born (19 & 20 yrs ago), I was able to lose my pregnancy weight (70 lbs), in 9 months.  My exercise at that time was going back to ballet classes twice per week & reducing portion sizes in food.  It was great.  I was sweating & toning up.  I felt wonderful and kept the weight off for several years until I became pregnant with my daughter 10 yrs. ago.  Since then it has been more challenging to focus on myself.

I like this idea of dancing for exercise & was playing around with the notion of going to bellydancing classses.  I am too heavy right now to go back to ballet...maybe after I have lost some weight. Jazzercise might be fun too.  I like yoga too & have a local place I can go.  But you are right, we A's need our cardio also.  

For right now, I am recovering from rotator cuff surgery & cannot lift my arm above my head yet or hold my arm behind my back.  So dancing & yoga will have to wait 2 - 3 more months.  I was able to ride my bicycle yesterday for 30 min.  If the weather holds out, I will do some light walking today...I am too sore to ride my bike again today.  I will take your advice to go slow with the exercise.

Cajun, about the tea...  Yes, I like the tea idea...it helps me get my daily H2O.  I have been drinking green tea & ginger tea...they are diamonds on my Swami.  I might order some of Dr. D's type A tea online to sample.  I will try to drink more plain water too.   Thanks for your thoughts.

The body is an amazing machine that can tolerate many abuses, and usually the reason for anything is a very complex mix of reasons, but fixing a little here and a little there can make a huge difference.

Here are two possible scenarios - or parts to the puzzle...  

Your body was starving for meat, as such, it was holding onto everything as it didn't know when the next proper meal was going to come...

Without the meat your body may have not been able to process the foods and eliminate the waste properly, so it was storing it until the cells were properly energized to clean the waste out...

Welcome to the BTD community! Glad you have found this sustainable way of losing weight.

Our type doesn't process grains and carbs very well... especially wheat- and corn-based food, and esp if you are a non-secretor or a Hunter like me   In time you might want to find out more by doing the secretor test and reading the Genotype book. For now, just enjoy the continuous weight loss and a new way of eating and living

Good job with the cycling and walking, Vivian! I do both of those about 3 days per week. That will keep you going until you can add the yoga and dancing.

What about calories? In the book it says that A nonnies shouldn't be on a low calorie diet. If you are not eating any of the avoid foods, should you still need to keep an eye on calorie intake?

I used to be a yoga / cycling devotee - not for weight, but for relaxation, flexibility and the commute.

Now; unhappy, unbalanced, unmotivated without a morning walk, swim & jog at minimum every day in summer, less so as the weather temp drops and winter sets in (more Pilates then - love it.) The sun shines and I need to be in it.

Weight has never been an issue, have always wished for more filling out in some places, but learning to love muscle building and tone - Jogging / lunging on sand is giving me an iron butt and thigh.

Bobbier... I LOVE Insanity...I've done it four times already...it's amazing for stress. I have also done p90 x and both systems combined. I love weights and working out until I can't move (I'm an O after all...lol). Unfortunately once my thyroid and adrenals started giving me problems I eventually had to stop...well, I didn't right away...I just stopped about three weeks ago. Now I'm only doing the p90x yoga video and some other pilates videos I own (I've done pilates for over ten years too, and I love it, although I do prefer to BRING IT! And work out like crazy, lol. My dr said insanity was stressing out my body and that if I wanted to lose weight I'd have to stop for a while...he was right!

yeah, me too... dieting works better than exercise for weight loss. in fact, the muscles i get from exercising are making me denser, and you know nomads already have quite a high percentage of muscle

Exactly. I get really muscular too. When I started P90X I went up a whole pant size because my legs get so buff. I hate it. One week after I stopped it I fit into my regular smaller jeans. It's crazy. I think it has to do with how much testosterone you have...is that a nomad thing too?

I am afraid to say as Hunter that I do not need the exercise to lose weight. Actually, when I exercise I become very hungry so if I am not careful with my portions I get very big muscles. I can become very big. Last year I lost 27lb, and maintained the weigh for a year, without any exercise other than some walks.

I want to get back to some vigorous exercise for the feeling of well being but I want to make sure my diet is well under control so I do not succumb to the hunger especially since it drove me toward bad food choices in the past.

Interesting topic.

I have to admit, all my time on the BTD I haven't really made any effort to exercise but the weight still comes off somehow. My normal exercise is running and I am too heavy for that now so I just do yoga and pilates occasionally but not often enough to count as regular exercise.

Hmm, Dr. D. could market these diets as *exercise free*. Hahah, not that he ever would,.. I'm just sayin'...
