as some of you may know my mom has scleroderma an immune disease.  she just recently signed up for the forums here but hasn't posted yet and she wanted me to ask a few questions.  she also has Raynaud's.  this is also part of scleroderma-Raynauds is a circulatory disorder.  she is taking butchers broom for this and wondered if it is ok for her blood type B?
her fingers get sores on them in the winter and get VERY sore.  her fingers are always cold and now one has a small infection from one of the sores.  ouch!!
does anyone know any herbs or supplement for circulation right for the B blood type?

Also she suffers from this TERRIBLE cough.  she always says if she were to get sick this may just do her in.  It is part of the scleroderma. she is trying to figure out what causes this cough. she trys everything she can think of to rid it but nothing is making a difference.  in the past she suffered from gerds.  things seem to be better in that area except she gets heartburn on a VERY empty stomach.  such as in the middle of the night when she hasn't ate for 6-7 hours.  she wakes up in the middle of the night coughing all the time and then can't get back to sleep.  if she could get her fingers cleared up and the cough taken care of she would be a lot better.  

She trys to treat herself naturally and her disabilty doesn't cover any of the doctors she prefers to see.  you know the ones who believe in natural healing  

any help would be greatly appreciated.  we've go to get my mom better.

Hi Mandi,
I've got to honest, I had to "GOOGLE" scleroderma to see exactly what it was. I saw a movie a few years ago about a lady that had a disease that turned her face and limbs to stone and I wasn't sure if it was the same thing.
I'm sure it's frustrating for you and your Mom. Eat as anti-inflammatory as you can for a "B" my husband and daughters are B's as well. I hope Dr. D comes on the board and gives you some advise.

she is slowly starting the btd.  but some of the bene's really bother her such as the yogart.  bananas are said to bene or neutral and they tear up her stomach.  i think she still needs a little convincing that the blood type diet is for her, but she did sign up for the forum and has  a few of the books.
when she gets a little money she wants to get the sec. test done.  but i think she is a nonnie and is following the nonnie food recomendations.

If Banana's bother her ( Neutral for a nonnie) perhaps she is a nonnie, also the yogart ( could she be lactose intolerant?) my husband and 2 girls are all lactose intolerant and if they don't take lactase with anything dairy they are buckled over in cramps..try lactase and see if it helps.
I also question if you know FORSURE if she's a B

1. DHEA: 20mg daily (not anything stronger!). This should help with the lupus

2. Magnesium and Malic acid: for the fibromyalgia

3. Black current seed oil: for the tender breasts.

You may have to tweek the doses of the others.

Hello, I am Mandi's mom and this is my first post.  I just started the BTD 2 days ago.  I have had my blood tested and I am B+.  I was diagnosed with scleroderma 3 years ago.  My worst problem is a chronic cough.  Every 3-3 1/2 hrs. like clockwork.  It starts out like a dry cough, but once I can get it broke up I'm fine for another 3-3 1/2 hours.  Mandi was mistaken about my cough at night though.  I [u]usually don't cough at night.  When I do cough, it is a real bad cough.  Sometimes so hard I spit up or throw up.  Most of the time when I do spit up, it is like plegm.  I hope I spelled that right.  If my stomach is empty, I get a feeling of heartburn which last approximately 20-30 seconds.  When this happens, its like I know I'm going to get coughing.  The rest of the time I cough without any notice.  This cough is really exhausting.  This has been going on for around 5 years.  About a year ago I had a pulmonologist tell me that so far the scleroderma had not caused any fibrosis in my lungs but I did have mild asthma.  I don't know if this has anything to do with my cough but when it started was around the same time I had pneumonia and bronchitis.  What had happened was I had tried out the air conditioning unit in a recently purchase of a used car.  I had about a 30 minute drive from work and the closer I got to my destination the more I realized that the air conditioning was really bothering me.  The doctor told me that I could have got pneumonia from a microorganism.  Also those crazy doctors had me on Protonix, Prilosec, Nexium, Prevecid...well you get the idea for a little heartburn.  I had pnuemonia 6 times in 5 years.  I have heard since that these types of so called medicines could make a person more likely to get pneumonia.  I swore off all prescription drugs, those types of doctors, and the like 1 1/2 years ago.  I really feel that if I don't get this cough under control, my cough is what is gonna' kill me.  Other than the cough I have Raynauds which goes along with scleroderma.  The type of scleroderma that I have is called CREST.  I use butchers broom but I'm unsure if it is compliant for my bloodtype.  My fingers do good summer months but come winter I have problems.  So far this winter I've had 2 infected fingers and we've had a really mild winter.  I had a herbalist tell me recently that my fingers looked as though it could be yeast.   It seems that certain foods on the BTD which should be beneficial for me really bother me bad with indigestion. (Yogurt, bananas, green tea, raw broccoli & raw cauliflower).  I've had a allergy skin prick test done and it showed a allergy to peppers which should be beneficial and celery which should be neutral.  I know I have laid alot out here but I really need your expertise.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Karen,
My first thought is that the GERD is irritating the base of the esophagus and causing the coughing to start.  I think this because I use to have GERD very badly before I found out that I'm a non-secretor, and I was eating some foods that really made it worse.  Every time I had an acid flare, I would start to cough.  I had to eventually stop eating all gluten foods, and all cow dairy.  I have switched to goat yogurt, and eat toasted rice cakes instead of bread.  And I follow my BTD to the letter.  It has helped tremendously.

Karen-Manidi's mom-a big welcome to the forum and the BTD way of life.  I feel for you with this disease schleroderma that has been inflicted upon you.  I have a best friend who has it, type A, who has had it for many years and has gone through hell.  Alas, she does not do the blood type diet.  She has tried many other things and lots of prescription pills including steroids.  She even has the Eat Right book, but...has not adhered to the diet.  I hope that you will gain better health through the diet and look forward to seeing your progress.  As Victoria pointed out the grains and dairy gave her many problems and maybe that is what is happening to you.  Keep us informed and when you can please get the secretor test done.  Following the nonnie diet is good, but once confirmed it is there in black and white.  Best of health coming to you.

thank you all so much for the responses, and mom, thank you for getting on here and posting.  right now my mom, husband, and i  are all going together and going GRAIN FREE.  i have some candida issues, my husband is an o, and possibly the infestions on moms fingers could be fungal like she stated.  so we are doing this together.  my mom questioned if she went dairy free like victoria did if ghee would then be an avoid?

I think she needs her secretor status tested.  It could be because some of those things that currently bother her are because she could be a nonnie.

Until she can get her secretor status tested, eliminate those items that are bothering her, and try to have her concentrate on other bennies.  After a while, reintroduce those items, one at a time and see how she reacts.  

As for the allergy skin prick test, I read recently that Mike S. did that years ago.  You can read about that on this entry.

Going strictly gluten-free could help significantly.  Karen- have you been tested for celiac disease?  The tests doctors usually do don't show much in the spectrum of gluten sensitivity, but if any of them were at all suggestive...  skin and lung conditions can go along with it, as well as digestive problems, such as GERD.

There's a recent book called The Gluten Connection that goes into gluten sensitivity pretty well, and all the associated autoimmune and other conditions.  It can be just as bad for a person's health as full-blown celiac disease, though most doctors (and patients) would rather only treat full celiac disease.  Enterolab offers some good gluten sensitivity tests, starting at $99, if you want to find out that way, or you can try strict gluten-freedom and see how it helps after a few months...but it can take that long, so you'd need to stick to it.  That book also gives some good advice for supplements to speed the recovery process, which you could tailor to your blood type.


Type O+ blogger, secretor afterall. Gluten intolerant. With two gluten intolerant sons:  A+ Secretor 10 yo (also fructose intolerant and slightly egg allergic), and  O- 7yo.

I think Ghee would be healthy for her, up to a few tsp/day.

She might have better luck with goat's milk yogurt.  Lots of B's can't handle cow dairy.

Green tea:  try different teas and different brewing times.  It's recommended to not let the water come to a boil.  If water is too hot, it brings out the bitter tannins and can irritate the stomach.  Dr. D suggests Genmaicha (my favorite) only brewed less than 1 minute.

Raw Broccoli and raw Cauliflower are very hard to digest.  Why not try them steamed?

I don't know about the peppers and celery.  Allergies often show up when a person is having an auto-immune dysfunction.  They might disappear later if she avoids all avoids for a few month, and focuses on as many beneficials as possible for as long as possible.

She should find out her secretor status.

Wow, you guys are great.  I am thankful for all of your responses.  I have not been tested for Celiac disease, but this is the third day that I have not ate any grains.  The only dairy that I use is ghee or butter.  I prefer ghee.  I'm planning on sticking with this to see if it makes a difference.  If I could get rid of the cough and the Raynauds, I would be in pretty good shape.  I am very determined to do whatever it takes to beat this disease and I will never give up.  That is why I am here on the BTD.  I have modified my life extensively.  I eat as much organic as I can.  I go for whole food.  Try my best to stay away from processed food.  No additives in my food such as chemicals, preservatives, artifical junk, etc.  I don't drink tap water.  Only shower with a chlorine free shower filter.  No more mercury fillings in this mouth.  And the list goes on and on.  If I found out that eating dirt would cure my disease, I would be having dirt for meals.  Mandi has worked in a health food store in the past and she inspires me and is a great help to me.  Please share any information that you feel would benefit me and keep me in your prayers.

Good job, Karen.  It takes determination, and you seem to have it.  You've made a lot of great changes and if you are staying away from all avoids that is one of the most important.  Eating as many beneficials as you can is the second most important.  And the third is getting your secretor status, because you may be eating avoids without realizing it.

That Acid Soothe may help with the cough.

wise descisions dear Karen, very fine; hmm about reactions on benefics; it might be that's just your own individuality and/or another issue, when fungii are around anywhere, it change the pic. completely;
especially if we don't know what kind of fungii it might be....
and I think the aminoacids are one of the good propositions (glutamin,l'cystein, perhaps also the 75 mg's aminocomplex from Solgar, called Neuro-recovery works amazingly,)
but here lets see .......B-vits. as a comlex, magnesium, and whats about B13 & B15? those are very special...but also to be found in your aerea, perhaps look into www.puritan's pride.com  for such special things.....but here please important is: to read the labels.....

Hello again,
I am currently taking magnesium and B complex.  I will be looking into your other suggestions.  I am planning to get my secretor test done asap.  I've often wondered if my cough could be caused from a fungus.  I have watched "Know The Cause" on television plus have a couple of Doug Kaufmann's books.  Fungus can cause a variety of ailments.  This is day 4 with no grains.  No dairy except for ghee and butter.  Also I was wondering if colostrum would be something that I should stay away from considering my problems.  Thanks to all of you for your help and suggestions.

dear Karen, colostrum works very similar to Moducare; calms down an overactive immunsystem and enhance a lethargic immunsystem if needed  it is a fine balancer but many ways lead to Rom, so far up to you to decide what you want to use; important here is that lactose and casein should be taken out; so nothing can trigger anymore

no Colostrum is similar in its effects like Moducare; Peter recommends Moducare, I say this stuff is simmilar to Moducare an immunbooster or calmer might have both effects
B - proteinpowder & fruits as a smoothie-
Rice with fruits in warm or cold (cooked in almondmilk he-he or ricemilk
rice & veggies & B-meats or fish
ricepops with ricemilk or almondmilk and B-fruits....
may I recommend basmatirice, ther's not that much of starch in as in other ricebrans

Oh my gosh!  You mean I can have rice since it is a grain  I dearly love rice, but I've been avoiding it since going grain free.  Should I just be avoiding gluten grains?  Also do you know of a brand of  protein powder that I could use that is dairy and grain free?  I will try almond milk.  I've never had it before but hear it is really good.  Also I'm a veggie freak.  I can eat veggies with every meal and be perfectly content.  Thanks for the suggestions.

Make your own almond milk. Raw almonds and pure water in a really good blender. keep adding enough water to thin and strain through cheesecloth.
I agree with Isa, get some Moducare( here you can get it at" Real Canadian Superstore" and even " Walmart" for a pretty good price) and I bet you can have basmati rice. Isa recommended it to me and it's a lifesaver.
Also try 1 or 2 cups of hot water with the juice of a lemon( pucker) first thing in the morning before you eat anything. It's a miracle for phlem and congestion

I have been very reluctant to even mention this product, because I have changed the main theory of how stem cells operate.  To me, they are an integral part of the learning process; filling any gaps.  A common knowledge re. children is their incredible 'plasticity'.  I very much believe this characteristic is about the presence of stem cells.  Rigidity is characteristic of aging - also lack of stem cells.

Can this help?  I really do not know ... maybe!

I've thought a little about this ::: what are the differences between children and adults?  We could say youth ... and much emphasis is placed on the reparative nature of a youthful metabolism.  So we enhance energy towards a youthful output with NADH, or add more hormones like human-growth hormone, pregnenolone or DHEA (it is even possible to regularize elevated cholesterol with a hormone cocktail that is the same as a 30-yr-old).  We can increase the level of RNA/DNA towards a younger age and it will bring a more youth-filled metabolic output to older cells (us).  The extreme about this is colostrum but colostrum's high level of support can come from its many growth-factors.  [Chorella with chlorella-growth-factor at http://www.shokos.com compliments colostrum's output.]

There is another way to help fill this old-too-soon that many of us run into.  To me this gap may be best met with StemEnhance.  It might be best to use the strategies above ... colostrum + high RNA/DNA + NADH [and likely CoQ10 + acetyl-L-carnitine] with the StemEnhance, not instead of it.

please understand that I think it would help, but I have no idea if these thoughts are correct.  One of the reasons I mentioned StemEnhance here, is because scleroderma is a real toughie.  It may/may not yield to such an approach.

I've seen it in the Protocols, if I'm not mistaken, it's in the Fatigue Book for type B, but I just don't feel that I have a grasp on it.  Not like the more common ones like Acetyl l Carnitine, Siberian Ginseng, etc.  I'm wondering what a person should expect to experience if taking it.  No worries, I'll Google when I have time, and see what I can come up with.

Victoria, fit now ...
I am taking this stuff twice daily 2x7,5mg's) and it helps me to go for stress and too much of work ...so I am still able to fuction and my brain is working a bit better and quicker than normal
and yess I go also for once 250 mg's of chin. ginseng & dong quai; works amazingly and no more problems with hot flashes

You and your mom are really on the right track, no matter what health issues need to be worked on.  The right food for your bodies will give those dear bodies all they need to balance themselves and also heal.  
For non-secretors, it's even more crucial to have the right blood-type food choices because we don't have the capacity of dealing with a steady intake of avoids (poisons).  When nonnies become completely compliant with our blood type diets, we can often see faster results than anyone else.

Thanks Victoria for the vote of confidence I have been staying away from ALL avoids.  If something is neutral for for non-secretors and avoid for secretors such as pumkin seeds, I will be staying away from it until I find out my secretor status.  Another example is soy beans.  Neutral for secretors and avoid for nonnies.  Not taking any chances.  I read my labels but try to stay away from most processed foods.  Today is day 7  I'm trying to expand my taste buds and try foods which I have not experienced before.  This evening I had parsnips which I've eaten before but only a couple of times.  My dinner consisted of venison, boiled vegetables(parsnips, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage with a little butter), and seasoned kidney beans.  I'm trying real hard.  I want results!  Thanks again for your post.

Thanks Lola I needed that.  Mandi is my only child and has never given me or her dad any problem(other than a little sas)  She is a good kid.  I think Scleroderma has changed my way of thinking.  I am truely blessed I appreciate the little things alot more.  Don't take things for granted.  I have never had much money in my life, but money means nothing to me.  Life is not about material things.  What's most important, money can't buy.  Ah, LIFE IS GOOD!!!
