Given we have entered the cold/flu season I was wondering the effects of BTD on colds/flu.

I am curious about issues such as:

Do BTD followers get colds/flu per year more or less frequent than before following BTD?

Do BTD followers get colds/flu stronger than before BTD?

What do BTD followers do once first symptoms are there (Hopefully I can avoid it treatment)?

What do BTD followers do once established. (Rats! I got it treatment)?

I generally get 2-3 per year, the same as before, but then again I am not very compliant.

But, I have noticed my colds are much lighter. I have not had the flu since I follow the BTD.

I get very annoyed with colds as my nose waters a lot. I find them very messy. With each cold I do a different treatment and I am still searching for a good solution for preventing and dealiong with them.

They have never gone down to my lungs (never had lung problems even though I was a very heavy smoker for nearly 20 years).

I rarely get colds/flu since BTD-ing. I used to have a good bit of the stuffies, all the time, and would come down with a cold/flu at least 2-3 times a year, if not more. I can't even remember the last time I had the flu...I rarely get sick being around the DH when he's got a cold either. BTD rocks!

I rarely get colds or sick anymore - and that's even with my not being all that compliant lately I recover from things much more quickly.

I used to constantly be stuffy and now I'm only stuffy when I have avoids - especially dairy - I can count on the stuffy dairy nose every time - but it clears up quite quickly once I'm back to better compliance.

Only one case of the flu in almost 3 years of BTD; no colds!!!!

Pre-BTD, I would have had at least one cold/flu per year, maybe even a few more colds.

Well, I am not sure if I cold or it's allergies acting up.
Since a couple of years ago, I got allergies. I watch my diet and there seems to be some improvement since I've started taking Chinese herbs, but I still have chronic sinusitis.
I predict the same number of colds as last year, however, I suspect I will have more energy and recover faster.

Depends on my funds. Can I afford the immune boosters recommended to me? How can I not?

I spent a lot of time last year sick. This year, utilizing my expertice, and funds, I have fought off three episodes of flu, virus, and infection. But hey, I am 50, and used to smoke. I also have had a severely accelerated immune system sicne I was a little girl, because of I am sure, of improper diet.

I intend to not be sick at all this year. I do know what to do.

What good news to start the day with! Everyone seems to be doing much better.

I am even more grateful to Dr. D. and people that have voted/posted their results as this morning my husband said that last year, on his first cold, when I recommended the cold pack from NAP he ended up with the longest, most complicated cold. What!

Nonsense! He did not last more than a day. And that I am sure of, and the proof is that the packs (except proberrys) are still full as I did not use them because I did not get a cold last year. Well done proberry! He soon took a heavy pharmaceutical treatment which he followed up with injections. Actually the bad cold was one he got 15 days after the 1st one. It was really bad and I am convinced it was the first one leaving him too weak.

Needless to say, he is not BTD compliant. Actually, he and his family are constantly rubbing off their good health on me. No problem, I am now happy with BTD and the results I read here are most encouraging. Thank you for sharring.

Well, not everyone

I hardly had any cold/flue for about twenty years pre-BTD. However, I happen to fight cold/flu twice a year now.

Perhaps my immune reactions are increasing

Or maybe I'm a little negligent about adjusting to the weather, now that I feel so great upon BTD'ing

Cheers,
Yaman

I'm a bit like Yaman in having at least two viruses a year after not having any for a number of years before btd.  BUT the good news for me is that they are less severe, (if as long, unfortunately).

When I saw the photos from Samos I could not help noticing the smell of a wonderful cigar. I wondered what were its effects with BTD?

I thought that because with BTD we are stronger, your body would react better. Considering your results, perhaps that is what it is doing even though you throw my wonderful statistics out of perfection.

Or, stop stepping on those puddles. Besides, what are people going to say when they see you stepping on the puddles with a cigar! It is not good advertising for the effects of BTD on the brain. I hope you do them at separate times.

On a serious note, I can not understand why you would be getting more colds. I hope someone can share some light.

Eh, do you do naughty things like Yaman?

I really wonder why both of you now gets colds when you hardly did so before. Ohh! I do hope someone shares some light.

I hope this year is better for both of you.

Dear Susana,

I used to smoke a pack of cigarettes per day pre-BTD, inhaling the smoke too.

So I doubt if there is a correlation between tobacco and flu in my case.

Actually I do talk about BTD even when smoking my cigar, that doesn't ward off people from BTD

Cheers,
Yaman

I used to have several colds( 6-10 pr year) - turning into nasty earinfections
- and about 1 -2 flues a year.
The last 6 years I have had almost no colds- and not even a flu every year.

I do get some cough still- but the sinus, fever - sore throat is gone
and I seem to get better faster !.

My daughter is a prime BTD ( even with just a 75 -80 % BTD complience) - she is sick so rare that when she finally gets down- her teachers get really worried !
BUT I have noticed lately that the teenlife put extra presure on her health and she seem to be less healthy than 1-2 years ago- so we have started to prepaire for winter

Susana,

I've already had two viruses this year - one of them a bad flu but it was not as intense as my pre btd flu. Honestly, me no complain about btd.

As for my naughty habits...I don't smoke, nor am I a passive smoker. I am a passive drinker, however.

In my case I think it is becasue I'm now living in a balmy climate in a typically uninsulated Australian bungalow that is absolutely frigid in winter. In order to warm my bones during winter, I have to step outside in the morning.

Since we are on the subject I have a few further questions.

Definition of common cold & flu:

A virus (and there are hundred of different strains) that attaches to the membranes of the throat and respiratory passages. Influenza/flu is a more serious variety of the virus. (from BTD Enciclopedia)

Am I correct by writing: When individuals report less cold/flu incidence it means the immune system is working well and thus the virus does not attach itself to the membranes?

Now, am I correct by writing that when the immune system is not working well, at least in the throat and respiratory passages, or these areas are weaker for some reason, the virus attaches itself to the membranes and so one gets the symptoms of a cold/flu.

The symptoms of a common cold or flu are miserable, but they are actually a sign that your immune system is trying hard to fight off the offending virus. (BTD Enciclopedia)

Also, am I correct by writing that if the symptoms of a cold/flu are shorter it is because the immune system has fought the virus faster and, if the symptoms are lighter it is because the immune system is in better shape; not strong enough to prevent the virus from adhering but good enough to fight it faster.

When Dr. D mentions in the Enciclopedia: your immune system is trying hard to fight off the offending virus. Does he mean the Immune system stops the expansion of the virus or it makes it dye sooner?

I think I need a candida cleanse and better get my act in gear.  Right now I feel like a cold is coming on but it could fade away.  I'm always sniffling.  ick  I was that way before BTD also.  I would get a cold and it just wouldn't go away.  I'd be at the dr. being checked for mono, etc.  Now, they don't last as long - thank goodness.

Cr*p. I read the poll wrong and thus voted wrong (what can I say, I'm a Florida voter! I'm challenged!). I thought it said zero to one per year, so I voted that. Ooops, it was saying zero to one less or equal than before. WRONG!

I usually don't get any colds per year now. At most, I'll get one. But usually it is on a biannual cycle at most now. I think at the moment I'm going on three years without one.  All the more impressive because, due to some upper-respiratory structural butcherdom I have going on, an ENT told me that I am more likely than most pups to basically get colds all the time. Well, between the BTD and being in Florida, I almost never get 'em. This would be the time of year I'd normally get one, but nope. Nada. Zip. Yay!

(sorry I voted wrong and scr*wed up the poll...us Floridians should be banned from voting in anything...we still have one contested election down here, but that is more a Diebold voting machine and/or massive-n-vast conspiracy thing versus voter error *lol*)

Pre-BTD I had bronchitis, sinusitis and sinus everything all the time!!  (I think this is a big big factor in my adrenal failure) I had colds but rarely the flu. Now, bronchitis is virtually a thing of the past. Most sinus is too unless I cheat, mainly w/ dairy. Still no flu. Sometimes I feel poopy if I eat something I shouldn't, but I always know what that is from!    IF I start feeling poopy, I immediately start heavy w/ the beef, bennie veggies and some proberry and off it goes!! Yes, I agree, BTD rocks!!

Now that I think back - when I was younger - in high school/college I almost always got either strep throat or ear infections with every single cold - thankfully that is a thing of the past.  I will get touches of what I feel like is a cold or headachy when I eat avoids but then as soon as I am compliant again things clear up quickly.

This and what I said here: "IF I start feeling poopy, I immediately start heavy w/ the beef, bennie veggies and some proberry and off it goes!! "

Well, I think both of these statements say alot. What you eat can affect you both sooooo negatively and positively. Funny how quickly getting compliant can help you get well and the majority of the people in the world have no clue about this. Sadly, nor do they have a clue that what they're eating makes them sick in the first place. I'm not so much talking about junk food here, but in general, the foods that are avoids for your BT.

I've only been on btd for one year.
I can't remember the last time I ever had actual flu.
I caught a real bad throat/cough in Uganda this year (July/August), not even a season for coughs and colds but I was sitting very close to some little ones really coughing and sniffing badly!!!
My BTD diet was difficult for me whist travelling but to be honest I just put it down to 'wrong place at the wrong time'!!
But, never one to be called selfish....I shared it equally with my husband!!!! (he follows BTD too).

All this apart, I am fortunate and very rarely catch colds.

As a  rule I am not often sick with anything (until I utter those words out loud... knock wood). But i've only been BTD since September, so who knows?
In fact my last 'bout with the flu was in 1993. I remember it was bad. My last head cold was 2004, and I had some stomach virus in '05 that knocked me on my butt for three whole days.
I guess I got lucky!

I voted 0-1 less or equal. I may have gotten short colds--but nothing too lengthy or serious.

I had a somewhat terrible flu just prior to beginning the BTD lifestyle more compliantly.

Dear PT,

In business school they taught me to make questionnaires as simple as possible. Well, guess what, I was so anxious to get too much info in a condensed manner I broke the rule and made the question quite complex. It is not you vertically challenged it is me not following good advice.

I designed the questions to give to replies:
1) The number of colds/flu people get per year and
2) Whether that number is less, equal, or more than before BTD.

The only place we can not tell if the number is more than before is in the 0-1 category as I figured there would not be many people that when getting in average 0-1 colds per year would be getting more than preBTD. E.i. Individuals who pre BTD would get 0, and now on BTD they may get 1 per year or biannually etc.

I have my nonBTD husband right by me watching TV.

I am tempted to show him the graph. Woh! Not only most are voting 0-1 cold/flu per year (which is outstanding) but, they are less or equal to before BTD.

I realize a serious illness is important but colds/flu are such a nuisance and the powerfull western world does not seem to find a solution and here we are... at the end of the poll, if results continue like this, I shall frame the graph.

BTD rocks!

My question would also be what number of people are actually having colds now vs just our bodies detoxing from much of the junk.  I know that's what I'm going through now - and I'm learning to tell the difference between detoxing and an actual cold.  Or also the difference between an avoid reaction and a cold as well.

Good point. Last year while on holidays I went 100% complient from my typical yoyo. Towards the end of the first week I got what looked like a cold but it was not as strong as I always got them. I do not know if it was a cold or detox. I would say it was detox as I did not give it to my husband eventhough I was quite close to him.

This brings up an important question for me.

If one takes "something" to hide the symptoms, does it make the cold/flu less contagious?

I can understand contact with the hands is less contagious because one does not fiddle as much with the nose but the breath? The virus is till in ones body eventhough the symptoms are hidden. So... what's the answer?

I tend to believe in the saying:
Treat a cold and it will last seven days, leave it alone and it will last one week.

Having said that I'm all for sucking something to ease a throat or a linctus to soothe a cough.

When we feel something coming on now, we get on the elderberry. I also have an elderberry/zinc lozenge I use. What we take isn't medicine, but natural stuff, so IMHO, I don't so much see it as covering up the sickness, but treating it.

I waffled between putting 0-1 and 2-3.  I know Ive been infected with the cold/flu but it doesnt bother me or slow me down.  The germs are there, the important thing is how our body reacts once they get into our system.  Im a non-secretor, so they get in but dont stay in.  Im a smoker, so I suppose that lowers my resistance.  But when I quit smoking for 3 months early this year, I did not notice any difference in cold/flu frequency.  I did notice a difference in allergic reactions.  The BTD helps with both.

At the 1st sign of a cold I take Air Born, Bee pollen, zinc up the nose & in the mouth, and peroxide in the ears.

I travel lots for business; I cant afford to have a cold.  The only sick hours I took off this past year were for dentist appointments.  Being a non-secretor, I have poor teeth.

I voted 0-1.

The flu before BTD and after have been very rare.  Last year was the first year I got the flu which lasted about three hours.  Everyone (especially the kiddies I watch) had it.  My fault for getting it as I lagged abit in the diet and knew my immunities were down.   The only other time I remember having the flu is about 8 years ago.  And...it still was not too bad compared to others.  When I get the flu I like to drink lots of water (even before BTD) to help flush those little invaders out of my body which ever way I can get them to go.

Now colds...those used to be very common.   When someone had one, I had one.  After BTD,  I do get a bit of a chest thingy once in a while.  But...NO MUCUS....which I am so grateful for.  If I feel a cold coming on I try to concentrate on staying compliant with beneficial foods, garlic, onions and elderberry, the liquids and that ever loving exercise...even if I don't feel like doing it.  It makes all the difference in the world.    Love this BTD way of life.

I have very good news!

After a life time of 7 day extremely messy colds for the first time I have had a 3 day cold! Yes! And it was not so messy.

I believe I have found the treatment (not only the cover up). Hopefully it works for future colds.

As soon as I got home from visiting my mother and sister (both with the cold virus) I started taking the following:

*Proberry caps (NAPs) 10-16/day.
*Ara Plus (NAPs) 3/day
*Collinsonia (NAPs) 3/day
*Respiratone (NAPs) 3/day
* Deflect (NAPs) 4/day
* Vitamin C with Rose Hips (Solgar) 500mg/day

Once I experienced the; Rats! I got it, I started taking as cover up 3 farmaceutical pills/day containing Paracetamol (500mg) Fenilefrina (8,2 mg) Clofenamina (3 mg) and a whole bunch of other small stuff like corn starch. I do not know if these ingredients need translation. In any case, I would say they are not very BTD or healthy but they are pain relievers, they lower fever, and are antihistamines. My colds are soooo messy no matter how strong my initial intent on not taking garbage I always end up doing so even though they hardly ever covered up the symptoms.

This time thou, my symptoms were hardly noticeable.

Once I had the cold I also took:
L-Glutamine 10gms/day in 3 doses
Tranquility Base (NAPs) to sleep better. Every morning I woke up so refreshed.

I just hope it is NAPs products that have made the difference and not the virus. I believe it is the effect of NAPs products as both my mother and sister (who gave it to me) had a longer and more symptomatic cold.

Thank you NAP. I finally found some cold treatment. If only you knew how important it is for me

And now, based on the results from the poll, I am even more motivated for BTD compliance. Even though this treatment works I rather avoid the whole experience.

I look forward to seeing the results produced by more voters or new treatments.

My question would also be what number of people are actually having colds now vs just our bodies detoxing from much of the junk. I know that's what I'm going through now - and I'm learning to tell the difference between detoxing and an actual cold. Or also the difference between an avoid reaction and a cold as well.

Reading the cough section on Dr. D's Enciclopedia he mentions that green or yellow mocus may be a hint of more serious bacteria.

I wonder if that is the clue for us (individuals in constant detox )

If our mocus is yellow or green it is a cold. If it is transparent, it is detox. Am I on the right track?

I think at the moment I'm going on three years without one.....
(sorry I voted wrong and scr*wed up the poll...us Floridians should be banned from voting in anything...we still have one contested election down here, but that is more a Diebold voting machine and/or massive-n-vast conspiracy thing versus voter error *lol*)

The poll says: "0-1; (=semi-colon) less or equal than before". (a)if you get zero, it can't be MORE than before. (b) if you get 1, it CAN be more than before. The poll doesn't cover the possibility that you get 1 and it's more than before. If you PT get 1 and it's more than before, then the actual participating would be wrong. I suppose that's what you were telling.

Susana,
A doctor once told me that mucus that has been sitting in the lungs can be green or yellow without any bacterial infection if it has been there for some time.  He didn't elaborate on how long, but it is an indication that mucus can be colored and still just be from detox...  That may be why Dr. D said that it "may" be a hint of bacterial infection...

I do get the flu about the same as before the BTD... which is still infrequently. But I have noticed a biiig change in how many colds I get per year. I used to have several colds each year, which almost always turned into sinus infections. But through the BTD and using a neti pot, I get a cold maybe once per year. And usually of shorter duration and intensity, like many others have noted. Plus... I am no longer hip deep in mucous when my children are sick. Thank goodness they are older and can wipe their own noses now!!

For me, it is stress that seems to trigger a cold, and I can feel it begin in my body before a cold begins. If I catch it in time and de-stress    I can usually ward it off with rest/sleep/relaxation... and saying no to others demands on my time... a big one.

And the NAP Proberry syrup is the best!! Awesome stuff!!! You must try it if you haven't yet.

Interesting! thanks.

Mhameline I wonder if there is anything that can indicate the diference between a cold or detox. More than anything, for the treatment. A good diagnosis makes all the diference.

In five years on the BTD I have gotten maybe 3 colds and that was when I was actually eating lots of avoids so I really wasn't on the BTD then.  Numerous other times I've had the beginning symptoms of a cold and immediately followed the BTD pretty rigorously along with eating lots of garlic and onions (hey I'd rather not have a cold) and then ended up never getting a cold.  Haven't had the flu in probably 15 years.

I get less sinus infections & colds, now, and when I do feel something's coming on, it's usually because I've been cheatin' my little brains out, and getting back on the BTD seems to straighten me out quickly. I shake off cold-ish sorts of things quicker and easier now because I know what not to eat. Just as simple as that.

I tried an eye dropper but it put too much in at once.  I dip my Q-tip into the peroxide and let it drip into my ear.  I do it a few times.

I forgot about the Proberry 3 syrup I also take.

Air Borne may have some avoids but it is better than the alternative for me.  I took a plane at the end of a cold and couln't hear out of one ear for a week and the other for 2 weeks.  I'm leaving on a business trip to NY on Monday and I'll take aire borne before I leave the house and Benedryl right before I board the plane.  I'll also chew gum (probably has some avoids in that too).  Plus I'll pay the expensive price for bottled water in the terminal (since I can't bring my own any more) so I can be swallowing as we are rising.

I picked up a box of Air Defender instead of Air Borne this time.  They both have similar vitamins & herbs but their Other Ingredients are different.

Air Borne:  Citric Acid, Soritol, Sodium Bicarbonate, Natural orange flavor, Polyethylene, Glycol, Aspartame, Mineral & Canola Oil, Riboflavin, Phenylketonurics.

Air Defender:  Acesulfame Potassium, Citric Acid, Orange Flavor, Potato Starch, Sodium Bicarbonate, Sorbitol

I voted 2-3 - same as before.

Because even though it seemes to me I have more colds/flus now, they're much lighter and shorter than my regular flus/colds were.

Pre BTD I used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day, but didn't cough or anything like that. I had about 1-2 colds a year. They lasted the typical 1 week.
I didn't have a flu for 5 years.

Since starting BTD a year ago I've had 3 colds and 2 flus. But the colds only lasted 2-3 days, and the flus were so light, I wasn't even sure they were flus!

So...

Thank you for voting. Interesting to observe that big mayority of BTD'rs get max 1 cold per year. Also, most people are reporting shorter colds and less flus. I wonder if it is weaker virus or more resistant bodys In any case it is very good news!

No, I stopped 2 years ago and didn't start again.

I know a lot of ex-smokers experience at detox period where they seem to have more colds and flus, and a lot of coughing. I don't recall that to be true in my case, though. I luckily never felt any discomfort when I smoked - thus I didn't feel the promised health improvements, when I stopped, either. Much to the annoyance (and mild amusement) of my co-worker who's the leading stop-smoking-consultant in the county.

It is rare for me to get colds or flu now. If I feel symptoms coming on, I take better care and the symptoms are gone before too long. I used to catch anything and everything that went around before btd.

I just now voted here.  I chose  0 to 1 because I rarely ever have a cold.  Pre BTD it seemed like I was in and out of colds half the time and they would often move into bronchitis.  I also had constantly swollen tonsils.  My tonsils have not been swollen in nearly 10 years and I haven't had bronchitis in at least a decade.

I might get a short flu once in two or three years, never bedfast with it.

I don't ever remember having the flu. The militray use to give us the flu shot when we were little. But my dad said it made him and all of use sick. Somehow he got us all out of it. I'd have to have been about 5yrs. I don't remember being sick. (My sister and brother both say they were) I've never taken the shots. My brother takes the shots and still gets the flu    )

I used to get only the flu about every couple of years, never colds, just sinus trouble.
Its been almost 6 years since I've had the flu and about that long when I first began ER4YT blood type diet.

Since starting the btd in 2003 my allergy problems have almost vanished. This is interesting to me because while my allergies improved when I became a health food advocate in 1977, vitamins and one size fits all nutrition did not end my problems but the btd did. I still pick up a cold virus once or twice a winter, but for the most part they are shorter and milder than they were before.

I'm on the GTD and just want to say that I have not had even the slightest sniffle or hint of a wisp of a shadow of the potential of a slight suggestion of a cold or flu since starting.  When did I start the GTD?  Thanksgiving of 2008.  So we are talking no cold for three years.  Not too shabby!  (Edited to add:  All the more impressive when you consider that I have a structurally compromised upper-respiratory system--long story that I'll spare youzzz--and I am therefore MORE likely than the average person on the street to contract colds and upper-respiratory viruses, on account of I don't have the usual filters.)

Note:  IF I am exposed to GERMS (yeah, I'm a bit of a Howie Mandel, what of it?   ) and/or feel slightly run down, I will pop a few Proberry caps, which have elderberry as a main ingredient.  They will turn any would-be houseguests of the allopathic germ variety that the GTD itself may let slip in as far as the front gate away, and gently but firmly escort them OFF the property.

WINNING!

I don’t have time right now to read the 65 responses before me because I have to leave for Pilates.  I voted 0-1 which holds true for both me & my son.  I can sometimes tell that I’ve seen exposed to the germs because I’m a nonnie & don’t combat them until they’re in me.  But the effects are so minimal & go away fast that I don’t count that as actually having a cold.  I just know when my body is handling it.  Other people would not notice the symptoms looking at me.

I still get 2-3 colds a year, but they are much milder than before. Hayfever symptoms have improved in some ways - barely any itchiness in my eyes, but still getting breathing trouble as of last summer. I do seem to be very sensitive to the air around me and sneeze more than any other person I know regardless of whether I have a cold. Anything can set me off - a change in air temperature, a draft, a hint of perfume or body spray, hairspray, hand cream, dust, a change in brightness even... but there was improvement when we holidayed in Lanzarote - clean fresh air and warm sunshine did seem to help.

How common, I had only one fever and cold flu after BTD, and It started 1 day after I tried BTD.

I was so sick that I blame it because of the BTD.
It is because of the BTD. Because Dr D stated that Type O can`t tolerate dietary changes. And said it is normal because your body is eliminating what It needs to eliminate.

What has surprised me? What has touched me? What has inspired me?
