First, a little background on myself: an O with unknown secretor status (I try to stick to foods that are approved either way), was a STRICT vegetarian for 5 years, included fish for the 6th. Ever since I started menstruating at the age of 12, I have been extremely irregular, with cycles happening about every other month. I've tried a couple of "therapies", the first being just birth control which helped regulate my cycles, but botched up everything else in my body and mind, and then an homeopathic regime that gave me one cycle, but nothing else after. Now at the age of 18, I haven't had a period since December (about 5 months). Before that period, I had another 2-3 month "dry spell". I also recently moved from Canada, to France and am living with my mother here, so it's not all too stressful. Around the same time I moved, I decided to "eat right for my type". The conflict I am having now is, is that my doctor, who actually isn't allopathic, but homeopathic wants to put me on hormone therapy. I don't like the sound of it one bit, but I am also worried that my lack of/irregular menstruation may effect my ability to have children in the future. What's a girl to do?
hello dearle, are you sure that it's meant hormonal therapies or just hormon-replacement th. and are you also severely underweight? Normally those docs. won't use chemical bombes; so perhaps get into a discussion with her or him and have some infos before starting whatsoever...
perhaps you should wonder a little about following the wisdom of such advice. A woman's body will stop having cycles if she has not got the ability to carry an infant .... barring some unusual body makeup, this usually involves too few body fats ... such as active female athletes. Hormones are indeed 'fats', but to be operational, they need support from other nutrients too. 18 years old seems a very early age or such intervention .... if such IS needed for you, then a specialist in hormones - an endocrinologist - should be the one making the decisions as to the type of hormone intervention that is appropriate.
France has a superb reputation in the medical field (what we would call 'alternate') so search around a bit.

Thanks for the response, and no I am not underweight. I have lost some weight, but nothing significant. I actually don't know how much, as I don't have a scale but I can see the change in my body. I will definetly not be taking the plunge without putting alot of thought into it first. I also forggot to mention that irregular periods seem to be genetic, as my mother didn't menstruate regularly until she started having kids, and then after she had her 2, they started to dwindle off, until vanishing into oblivion. She hasn't menstruated in 10 years, and hasn't begun menopause either. Her mother didn't even begin menstruating until 17 or 18, and then went on to birth 5 children. With this sort of family history, do you think I should be as worried as I am about not menstruating?

No, I wouldn't worry too much--similar family history. You might have your thyroid checked--for some reason, it seemed to follow the folks with hyper (not hypo) problems. You might also find out what your actual hormones are (and whether you are ovulating or not)--what is going on with progesterone, and so on. I am always a little surprised that so many advise taking hormones without testing to see what is there first. After trying a few things, have done saliva tests, and think I put the cart before the horse.
Lecitone is a capsule of high EPA + DHA + AA fish essential fatty acid oils ... but instead of just the oil they are complexed into phosphatides (which makes them extremely bioavailable) - or superior brain-food. This product seems to fill-in many gaps in an otherwise OK metabolism and it is readily available in many of France's Health Food Stores.

Yeah, they did all the tests they could think of. Cholesterol, thyroid, hormones, etc... I'll look into the lecitone thingy maybe. I'm seeing my doctor Monday afternoon, wish me luck! Thanks.
Don't know if it applies, but might check for PCOS - I had similar history in younger years. Do a web search and see if it applies to you. If you want to try the natural approach, I usually had very good results with Traditional Medicinals "Female Liberty' Tea. I used it when I realized I had not cycled for several months and felt the need for 'housecleaning'. Usually worked after 2-3 cups. Good Luck
I am having the exact same problem at the moment. Really irregular periods and seemingly no real reason for it. All tests were normal: thyroid, hormones, etc.... No PCOS..........My periods are just really irregular for about a year now. My doctor said that she thinks my Hypothalamic/Pituitary axis just got knocked out of whack from stress, significant changes in diet, etc... She said she feels like it just needs to be realigned. Figuring out how to do that is now the question.
Of course, she is an MD, so she recommended birth control for 3 months just to get things back on track.
I have tried what seems like everything at this point: cut out soy b/c I thought it was estrogen dominance, Vitex for awhile, all types of supplements. Nothing has worked for me personally.
We people can get his product here in NA ... it is called Leritone and is bought from the Canadian branch. Just click on the small Canadian flag- the white-red one with a red maple-leaf (top-left of page http://www.ponroy.ch)::: it's English & French!

In looking at the Leritone, I can't seem to find a list of ingredients on that webpage. Am I looking in the wrong place? Or perhaps you found the ingredients somewhere else?
this product and I go back many decades and the info on the box does not (nor ever has) explained very much. My first information came via Jan de Vries' book 'By Appointment Only: multiple sclerosis'. [He's an ND working in Scotland] and likes to use this specific product for neurological ailments because it has a special phosphatide that promotes healing in neurological tissue ... sorry can't remember the scientific name for it now ... Leritone is encapsulated fish-brain. It is a powder in a capsule so it may have been freeze dried but do not know.
There is literally tons of info ... try asking the reps on the site for some info ... see what they send ...

because everything works together (especially body energetics) ... the brain acts something like a wheel hub ... the nerves are really only brain extensions ... very similar chemistry
