I recently purchased the new Cookbook for Type A and have noticed that Agave seems to be used for sweetening recipes quite a bit.  I have heard mixed reviews about the health benefits of Agave and wonder what the opinions of the forum members might be concerning its use.

I tend to go by ratings. For me Vegetable Glycerine rates higher, so I tend to use it or honey if I am going to add a sweetener to something I cook.

I do still eat unibars that contain Agave.

Agave is easier to find.

Fructose cannot cause any significant insulin spikes since fructose does not require insulin for its absorption and metabolism. Agave is a source of fructose (as are blueberries) but the main reason it is generally considered a 'neutral' as compared to other sweeteners is that it seems to produce almost no bacteria overgrowth (as opposed to hfcs, which does) and does not provoke major immune/ gut related reactions, which hfcs also does (probably because it is corn derived

I used to use agave as it has no calories, but I read somewhere that if you want to avoid glucose, fructose etc, to avoid agave- anyone know otherwise?

Sugar has 48 calories per tablespoon
Agave has 60 calories per tablespoon (this is for raw blue agave sweetener by Wholesome Sweeteners-number do vary)

Agave contains lots of fructose.

Ratio of Fructose to glucose in Agave varies.
One source gives 92% fructose and 8% glucose;
another gives 56% fructose and 20% glucose.

It depends on the product.

I read something about your body processing agave differently?! It goes straight to the liver (which is why it doesn't raise blood sugar) "...Sweet foods are made up of glucose, fructose and galactose.
When glucose is eaten, it is absorbed into the blood stream. It then makes its way to the liver where it is...used...for the body’s energy...requiring insulin. We need glucose for energy and we need insulin production to help us regulate our blood sugar. We want the rate with which our blood sugar rises and falls to be slow and steady... which is why foods low in glucose (ie. low glycemic) got a good rap.

...Fructose is not a direct source of energy for the muscles and the brain as glucose is. Fructose does not go into the blood stream and affect our blood sugar. And while this might be seen as a good thing with regards to the regulation of blood sugar, fructose is instead taken up more readily by the liver. There it prompts the liver cells to produce triglycerides, a type of blood fat associated with risk of heart disease, weight gain, liver inflammation and diabetes. For this reason, fructose is sometimes referred to as “the sugar that acts like a fat”."

Also from the same source - Agave (fructose)"...apparently doesn’t induce the same level of satiety as glucose, so people drink/eat more of foods that are sweetened with fructose

I read the bottle packaging again and it says that those with fructose intolerance should avoid Agave- I use rice malt and it does the job in my cookies, cakes etc..

Interesting that this thread is right next to the one on belly fat?? I never had belly fat the way I have now, until I mistakenly indulged in agave... Yes I overindulged   but then I over indulge in lots of things....& whilst those other things might make me gain weight...therefore warning me not to do it again, this stuff just added fat where I've never really had it before...
