I'm new here...so very sorry if I picked the wrong category for this question....mayne someone can point me in the right direction if I did....

I am very confused....I was looking at the recipes for type o's posted here and am really confused as to why there is a variety of recipes for oats and eggplant when I thought that was on the list of foods we are NOT supposed to have? Can someone guide me here?  I'm really new to this concept....

Also, for a newbie...how important is the spices?  Will a newbie see results if they just add the greens to the diet, more meats and avoid meat and just TRY to do the rest here and there? This is a lot to take in....

Which book are you using for the food lists? Both oats and eggplant are neutral for O secretors but avoids for O non-secretors. I'm not sure what their values are in Eat Right 4 Your Type since that book is a conglomeration of secretor and non-secretor values (since it was published before the secretor test was readily available.)

It's fine to ease into the diet gradually. Plenty of people start by cutting out wheat and increasing red meat, then cutting out obvious corn and emphasizing beneficial veggies, then cutting out most dairy products, then cutting out potatoes, and then, once this way of eating isnt' so "new" anymore, focusing on all the details like the spices and "hidden" avoids in processed foods.

You will definitely see results if you cut out the worst avoids, make sure to eat red meat at least a few times a week and animal protein 2-3 times a day, reduce grain portions, and increase veggies. If changing all the spices right now is just too much, then don't worry about it for now. You can increase compliance in a few weeks.

ahhhh....yes, the list I have is from the eat right book.....I'll check out that link...I bet it will help a lot.  I couldn't find any other list and that's the only book I have...our library didn't have it and that's the only book other than the pregnancy book that a friend of mine has...and I'm sort of in a rush to get started.

so isn't there a more complete list somewhere and what is a secretor/non secretor?  I haven't come across that in my book yet....I only have the one book and can't really buy one right now....not that I have a lot of reading time anyway....oh, this is overwhelming but I REALLY want to give it a shot.....

I'm pretty sure the Eat Right 4 Your Baby book does include the secretor variations. That might be an easier book to work from, even if you do need to ignore the "introduce this food at this age" comments.

I'm able to reserve books online, from any library in my county, even if my local library doesn't have it. Then it's delivered to my local library and I get an email when it's ready to be picked up. Is something like that available to you? Or are none of Dr D's books available in your county at all?

In Eat Right for Your Type (the oldest book) oats and eggplants are avoids. But as noted above in the more recent books and type base these foods have different rating depending on secretor status.

The recipes are added by anyone, who may be achieving a different level of compliance than you are.  Even when we edit the recipes, we leave them open to more blood types if there are some ingredients that are relatively easy to swap for compliant ones...

For someone just starting, the level of compliance grows at the pace the dieter is comfortable with.  Start replacing the major avoids, then swap out other avoids as you use them up or at your own pace.

I saw major results by removing corn and chicken from my diet.  The chicken was an immediate change, but the corn took three weeks for me to see the benefit.  Each of us is individual, so your results may vary...

But as is probably obvious that book also does not distinguish between secretor and nonsecretor ratings for food.

The Live Right, Blood type diet Encyclopedia, Allergies, diabetes, Aging, Arthritis, Cancer, Menopause, Cardivascular and Fatigue books consider secretor status.

Thank you all....this has been quite helpful.  I think for now I will just have to assume I am one of the 80% of secretors...and eat the oats and eggplant, etc.... that will certainly make it easier on me.  I just wish there was a simple list for me somewhere so I would have a better idea of what's on the secretor list without looking at each individual item on the link above....just trying to save time...everything I do is scrunched into a minute here a minute there as I homeschool and have a toddler and already cook everything from scratch...no processed foods here....so time is really hard to come by.....so I really appreciate this forum with the quick answers! WOW!

For starters, cut out (or down) on wheat, and replace with spelt, rice, or rye. Eat lots of veggies.

If you still have wheat flour (including white flour or all purpose flour) then go ahead and use it up, but look for healthier alternatives when you next go shopping. If you can find white spelt flour, you can use it in any recipe calling for all-purpose flour. Other flours need a little more fussing with when you replace them in recipes.

For cookies, you can pretty much use any flour at all and it comes out great, though possibly more crumbly than you're used to. In cakes, you may need to fuss with liquid ingredients or add eggs to make them still come out good. You can make kitchen experimenting part of homeschooling- a hands-on activity with the kids!

For meals, keep things simple. A meat, a grain (such as cooked brown rice) and 2 veggies is our typical meal. Often we use sweet potatoes for one veggie and green beans or salad for the other, but I'll vary it depending on what we have in the house (which varies depending on what the farmer's market has.) The meat varies between beef burgers, roast turkey breast, sauteed ground beef (like for tacos, minus the wheat or corn shells) or whatever we have on hand. If you don't have any Bs in your family, you can include chicken as well.

When I started on BTD, I changed my own diet first, and then worked on the rest of the family about 2 months later. I didn't have the energy to work on them until I'd healed a bit  by eating right for myself for a few months. It was also easier to keep them on familiar foods while I learned about this way of eating and figured things out for one person. I think it made the whole  family's transition into BTD eating go a lot more smoothly.

There is a pocket size book, and I believe some cards that are only food list which is great to have while shopping you can order from this site. They are inexpensive and very handy.  They don't take the place of reading the books but are a very good tool for making shopping lists.

So what is the better book to get that would have the lists that are differentiated between the secretor statuses ( I assume their are other differences besides eggplant and oats...and do those cards mentioned above have those differences as well?

You don't have to buy the books from this website; I'm just sharing these links so you can see which books I'm talking about. You may be able to find used copies on amazon.com (or a local bookstore or another online retailer) for far less money than buying them new.

If the desire is for knowing secretor/nonsecretor values do not get the pocket guides!

The wallet cards clearly distinguish secretor and non secretor values.

The Live Right book and the Blood Type Encyclopedia both include lists that distinguish secretor and non secretor values.

The Encyclopedia lists often include reasons why food are rated and are quite clear.

While you are waiting some of the more common avoids for type O non-secretors are:

crab, mussels, anchovy, all cheeses, garbanzo beans, buckwheat, oats, spelt, eggplant, olives, canola oil, strawberries, cinnamon, honey, vanilla

Thank you again....hopefully I'll find more time to look into these options today....in the meantime my friend loaned me the book on pregnancy/babies (can't think of the title) and that has the different list in it!    I'm not pregnant....but it's fertility reasons that I'm going to try this diet....I have no other health problems as we already eat a very healthy lifestyle compared to that of the standard american diet and have already 'cured' all of our ailments in that manner.     So I'm not making the rest of the family do 'their blood type' as of this point (they are all b's while I'm an o)....I'll wait and see on that one.... I'm not 100% convinced of this theory but do want to give it my absolute best shot.  Thanks again. You are all so helpful.
