Hi all!

I need suggestions for canned sardines. The kitchen is kosher and doesnt allow for any sort of non-veg cooking, hence the canned option.

What can be done to make it palatable, as the portion  recommendation for a Hunter is 4 times a week...?

I crushed a few sardines in olive oil and added chopped red onion, celery, and some tomato....added a dollop of paneer and combined the whole thing with salt and pepper.....topped a piece of flax bread with the mixture!  glad I used only half, cause tomorrow I ll do the same with the other half!! lol

Paneer is soft unripened cheese curds. You can easily make it yourself. If you check the Cook Right forum there should be a thread about making your own cottage cheese, which is basically what paneer is--homemade cottage cheese. You might also check Recipe Central to see if the recipe is posted there.

I just checked Recipe Central and there is a very simple recipe for Farmer's cheese that seems to work pretty much for anything. I am concerned about boiling the buttermilk in the orginal cartons so I sent a PM to Drea about pouring the milk into regular canning jars and putting the lids on. I will try this recipe if I can do that. They are doing so many weird things anymore to foods, cartons, etc., that I don't want to take any chances right now with anything transferring from the carton to my food until my stomach settles down a little more!   But it would be absolutely wonderful to be able to use this to make cheesecakes again after all these years!    I always LOVED to make them before the BTD brought that to a screeching halt!! Ahhhhh, nothing is better than a good cheesecake with fresh wild strawberries!!!!

Something simple that I have done is to mix the sardines with cilantro, chopped onion, nutritional yeast and spices to taste (cayenne or curry come to mind). Use a little olive oil and or water for desired consistency when you mash/mix. Other options included chopped celery, walnuts or other 'tuna salad' ideas.

Those are great recipe ideas!

I'm a basic food gal, so my favorite way to eat sardines is just to put them on top of a baked sweet potato (bake in the skin, then remove skin and mash with ghee).

Flaxseed bread, toasted, lots of ghee on the warm bread and a decent amount of compliant mustard - top with sardines and eat...


Eating it without bread...I prefer Haddon House canned sardines in lemon and WATER (not oil not lemon sauce, etc).  Very hard to find though and every time I special ordered i, the warehouse sent lemon sauce/oil kind.

Are sardines an acquire taste or do you either just like them or not? I just can't bring myself to try them but my husband likes them. According to Rachel Ray, you can put them in a pasta sauce and they kind of melt and don't taste fishy but I don't know...

Also, any recommendations for a good brand of canned salmon?

My 5 year old son has loved them since he was two!  Bones, skin and all.  He just cuts them into little pieces and eats them with a fork.  They're his favorite fish!

I like to put them on a spinach salad with lots of olive oil/lemon juice/salt/garlic dressing.


Type O+ blogger, secretor afterall. Gluten intolerant. With two gluten intolerant sons:  A+ Secretor 10 yo (also fructose intolerant and slightly egg allergic), and  O- 7yo.

I would go with 'Clover Leaf'. In Canada its wild Pacific salmon and comes in a 'low sodium' version. ( ie no salt added)

I order my salmon directly from canneries on the Pacific coast (such as Chuck's Seafood), or directly from fisherfolk when the fishing is good.  It is more expensive than supermarket brands, but the quality is beyond comparison.

I like a Sicilian recipe ; stir fried fennel and a bit of onion, raisin  and pine nuts over your pasta or rice and you mix it with the canned sardines.  In Sicily they cook it with fresh sardines, but I guess you can use this way to put sardines over  this hot dish with good results. Use a little of the fennel greens chopped for extra flavour or crushed fennel seeds.

If you can find grape leaves, simply wrap them around the sardines, drizzle some olive oil and grill.

I like sardines, but don't particularly like eating smoked foods.  I have found a brand that sells unsmoked canned sardines.  Connetable

Sadly, my source of cheap sardines has vanished like the early morning mist under a relentless sun.  

Wal-Mart had generic 4.25 oz spring-water packed no-salt for 50 cents, but they have stopped carrying them. Been meaning to load up on them, kept putting it off...

This is the brand I buy. Sardine in water. They have ones in mustard & tomato sauce...but I believe they contain corn starch.

I was concerned about the broth issue...my hubby is the hunter of the family, he likes the tuna for his tossed salads.  When I saw that there was vegetable broth I was concerned that it was soy.   Not good for hunter. Thank your for your post.
