Just dumped some beautiful stew beef into some nice organic beef broth and plan to add browned onions, celery, carrots, garlic, maybe some swiss chard... or spinch...

I'm wondering what spices to add?  Also what other vegies... I don't want it to be like beef stew... but just a good beef soup.

Try thyme (dried or fresh is okay) and a bay leaf. If you like just a touch of heat, a little pinch of red pepper or cayenne is nice too.

I agree with Brighid.  For my hamburger stew (I use ground turkey now) 1 bay leaf, 1 teaspoon thyme and 1 teaspoon basil.
I also like a cup of chopped tomatoes or a can of diced tomatoes. Yum!
I just listed my recipe. You can see it here under Turkey Burger Soup:

I was hesitant to use my name since it is a variation of hamburger soup(modified so my O hubby and I could both eat it) from an old La Leche League cookbook (Whole Foods For the Whole Family)but I guess it's quite a bit differnt.

Rice pasta could be listed as a variation, I suppose, and then it would be gluten free as it says.

Nomato sauce (is it Jill's?) ...should be in the recipe index...its good. but its based on carrots so maybe don't use them n the stew...
