Can anyone recommend a good olive oil sprayer? I have read the reviews at Amazon, and none look too promising. I appreciate all feedback.

I use one of those mini sprayers (meant for toiletries) found in the travel section of a drug store. It's held up great (no clogging).

Cook's illustrated recommends QuickMist, I haven't tried it yet, but can say Misto failed me both with splotchy spray and short lifespan.

Well I wouldnt recommend misto as well, it was good to use by my family for a month or two but it started breaking down and was hard to use. We gradually forgot about it as it was hard to clean and ended up being more of a pain to use it then to not use it. Finally it ended up in the back of our spice cabinet molding and has been there for quite a few years, which reminds me that I should throw it away. The idea of an oil sprayer is very nice but the actual products seem to fall short.

I tried the Misto and it worked for awhile and then went Caput.

The toiletry bottle sprayer seems like a good idea. (And it doesn't have to be primed/pumped up first!)

But is this safe for food products?

Unless the plastic is rated for food safety I would think it would not be safe. Even if it was having plastic in constant contact with oils would probably not be a good thing. Alot of toxic chemicals are easily stored in fats, and most plastics are not good to keep in contact with food. I always take my food to work in these cute glass containers with plastic lids I get from a local korean market, instead of the ever popular plastic ones I see at work. Its a little heaveyer but healther.

I use the toiletry bottle sprayer also.  It's cheap and hasn't failed me thus far (I've had it a year and a half I think).  However, I haven't used it on the mist setting so if that's what you're after I can't say whether it gunks up or not.  I've had it on the concentrated squirt the entire time.  I've found it handy for squirting a few shots when cooking or making salads.  As far as the safety, I don't know.  This olive oil is sitting in plastic.  I haven't been too concerned so far.  At least I'm getting a beneficial in my diet.

The one I've been using is a Goody brand, clear plastic bottle that holds about 6oz.  I just tried the mist setting and that did not work--it either didn't come out or just shot a concentrated shot.  This talk about the dangers of plastic has me wondering if I'd be better off getting a glass olive oil dispenser with one of those metal nozzels.

IMHO, yes, you would be.

I have purchased and used a commercial stainless steel type of mister from Amazon and/or  Williams Sonoma to fill my organic extra virgin olive oil to use for baking, et al.

I decided to purchase a mister, because I wanted an olive oil spray as close to natural as possible with no lecithin or chemicals added.  It also had to be organic.

At the time, I could not find such a product on the market.

Alia!!  This is exactly the one for which I've been looking! I saw this a long time ago and didn't order it then and could never find it again. So, many thanks to you! I've been searching and searching for this. Guess you weren't around when I posted for a mister/oil to spray converter.    But sure am glad you were around for this thread!! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!    And I've already ordered it and ordered an extra for my friend that just bought me 2 elderberry plants.  

I didn't ponder the plastic issue at much length but now come to think of it....hrmmm....the stainless steel bottle sounds like a good investment. I have a glass oil dispenser with a small pour spout and it does about 1 1/2 t to a swirl - got it at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

So even though the mister is made from plastic, and the jar is made from glass, it's the opinion of many here that this would be safer than a toiletry bottle? The misting feature makes it so much easier to get olive oil onto a sheet of nori for wrapping eggs and such.

I bought two of these, one after the other, but they both failed on first use. The store clerk couldn't even get one off the shelf to mist water. Mine both came from Williams-Sonoma.

It's interesting that I no longer drink water out of a plastic Nalgene bottle, but I spritz oil out of a toiletry bottle to ingest. Doh!

you can, of course, use one of those metal nozzles tha stick right into the oil bottle. I like those, bbut we purchased some expensive EVOO in a metal can....I think Its going to be a good thing...no light...(it organic and sold at WF)

I JUST received my Mister!  I immediately washed it out and filled it up. Worked good the first time.  If anyone else buys this, please be sure to read the instructions on the side of the Mister. You can put no more than 7 oz of oil in it and you have to prime it until you feel resistance. I am hopeful that if I wipe off the spray nozzle each time I use it, it won't get clogged. Will also run it under HOT water now and again. My hair spray (yes, I know - board straight hair MUST have it tho) nozzle gets gunked up now and again and all I have to do is run it under some really hot water, wipe it off and I'm all good to go again.

Jayney, what brand did you get in the can? I have some I purchased from Frances Mayes - all done in my beloved Italy. And in a beautiful dark bottle.

I sure will Drea. I do have to say tho, and I forgot to mention this earlier, I was really disappointed that the inside of the container is plastic.  Still better than using aerosol or cr*ppy spray, I guess.

I would like it if the mister part was made from stainless, but so far I haven't found that option.  I don't like the idea of the oil sitting in plastic bottles.  I know the little plastic tube is down in the oil, but at least it's a smaller surface touching the oil than the entire inside of the bottle.  I've had good luck with the blue cobolt glass bottles and no clogging of the sprayer.

I bought some EVOO in a can ... La Amarilla de Ronda, with the letters "LA" appearing in large print. Its pretty cool looking and is very tasty.....but hey, I would rather have the Frances Mayes oil. I saw the movie (the one with the real Frances Mayes and her sweetheart) talking about the olive oil project. I don't know what it was called.

Please remember to correctly 'prime' it before each use to keep it in good working order with no oil clogs.
