Do You Take Acid Suppressing Medication? A Study Warns Against Vitamin B12 Deficiency

New in Personalized Living Webzine:

Quoted Text

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association has found that people who use certain acid-suppressing drugs for two years or longer are at an increased risk of vitamin B12 deficiency.  A deficiency in B12 can lead to anemia, neurological problems, or dementia.

I learned years ago that antacids would make a person anemic. I had to take them for a month back then for a very severe acid reflux problem, and for the only time in my entire life I tested anemic when I had my physical. That was about thirty years ago. I was suspecting that the antacids caused it, and when I asked my internist if that could be the case he agreed immediately. He prescribed a super duper supplement for a few weeks. Haven't had a problem with any deficiency since.

How would I know if I need to take Vit  B12 supps?
I eat plenty of red meat & take a multi.  But I also am 66 years old now & they say that absorption really slows down as we age. (I don't take any drugs/meds.)
Whaddyall think?

Are you anemic?

You can tell this by red blood cell count.

Anemia can be caused by a variety of factors.  To tell if it is B12 related-look at the cell under the microscope:

The number and appearance of red blood cells. People with anemia have fewer red blood cells than normal. In patients with vitamin B-12 deficiencies, the red blood cells appear large and underdeveloped.

Additional tests to confirm B-12 deficiencies, other tests can be used:

Antibodies test.

Methylmalonic acid test.

Schilling test.

Most people would probably benefit from taking Methyl B-12 and folate. Here is a possible product for this:
