Hi,
Question: I have read that too much yeast in ones diet can cause weight gain and i am a little confused about this. In the Teacher's supplement diet guide Brewer's yeast is recommended daily (1 teaspoon), nutrional yeast is a diamond food and 1 teaspoon is recommended as required. Can I take both or it is a case of either one or the other? The Brewers Yeast supplements I have recommends 6 tablets daily.

Maybe rotate the two.  Your diet should contain variety.  I don't know what 6 tablets equals in teaspoons.  Maybe crush them and measure.

I love nutritional yeast and brewer's yeast and know more about them than any human being really should *lol*.  First of all, I would recommend buying the actual nutritional yeast flakes instead of taking tablets, as they are DELICIOUS in various foods.  I will link you to an oldie but goodie thread that goes into a lot of detail on delicious ways to use nutritional and brewer's yeast.  Secondly, they are basically interchangable and whichever one you prefer is fine:  the nutritional yeast is often more to the taste of most people, as it is "primary grown" for human consumption, as opposed to brewer's yeast, which originally was a byproduct of the beer brewing process, though now most brewer's yeast brands are also made to be sold as a food supplement.  Brewer's yeasts are often more bitter than nutritional yeast, which has a delicious, complex, unique flavor that some describe as "nutty", though that isn't quite it.  Like I said, it's unique.  The nutritional content of brewer's and nutritional yeast are very similar, both being very rich in the full B vitamin spectrum, protein, and minerals.  I LOVE the stuff.  Here's the link to the old thread about it:

P.S.  Edited to add:  don't worry about whatever it is you read re "too much yeast" leading to weight gain.  It was not referring to nutritional or brewer's yeast, I'm virtually certain, but rather to the kind of yeast used in baked goods.  No worries!  

P.P.S.  Further edited to add:  I am the one who used to be known as "Car 54" *lol*.  Shows you how old that linked thread is!  So it is my spread that is being discussed.  Like I said, I love me some nutritional yeast!  I love brewer's yeast, too, even some of the most bitter varieties.  From the very first time I ever tried it, it was true love.

Thank you all for the responses, I have both the nutritional flakes as well as Brewer's in tablet form.  I think I will stick with the flakes for now and when that is finished I will take the tablets.  Thanks for the links, they are very useful.

RDA is an obsolete government recommendation levels for food and vitamins. It never applied to food type items like nutritional yeast.

You can look at RDA values for various vitamins and minerals in a food product like nutritional yeast.

It is going to vary by brand.

Here are figures for the Red Star Vegetarian Support yeast product:

1.5 tablespoons of the powder or 2 tablespoons of the flakes provide:

Thiamin – 640% RDA
Niacin – 280% RDA
Folic Acid – 60% RDA
Selenium – 32% RDA
Riboflavin – 565% RDA
Vitamin B6 – 480% RDA
Zinc – 21% RDA

It's probably in that thread somewhere but I love the Imported KAL fine yeast flakes on on scrambled eggs - tastes cheesy.  Delicious and nutritious.

OMG - Car 54 lol.  It's been a long time....

KAL is my favorite brand of nutritional yeast flakes, too, Jane.  They make a powder, too, which I don't like quite as much.  I have some of that now, as they were out of the flakes last time I bought nutritional yeast.

And, yeah, it's been a long time since the days when I was known as Car 54 *chuckle*.

I actually like what they call the imported finer flakes....it's what I started with.  Last time I was at WFs they were out of them and I bought a different brand (their brand I think).  I haven't opened them yet so I'll have to see.  I like and trust the KAL.

I think those imported finer flakes (which are really a powder, not flakes) are the variety of KAL yeast I have now.  They're lovely but I prefer the flakes.  I'm a flake, so I like to eat my own kind.

omg, I'm SO irked right now!  I just wrote this FABULOUS and information-packed post re the fact that, while I prefer the nutritional yeast flakes, I sometimes go for brewer's yeast and even the most bitter varieties/brands, such as Lewis Labs.  I love all brewer's/nutritional yeast and never met a variety I didn't love, including the most bitter ones, which like I just said, I occasionally get a hankering for.  So, you may be wondering:  "Where is the information you just claimed was packed into the post you just wrote?", which, btw, got VAPORIZED by the message board software, as it blithely informed me that "your last post was less than 30 seconds ago", and then when I hit the "back" arrow to get outta that little ditty and back to my post field, my post was gone!  Hence my irkedness!  Because the info part was that you shouldn't buy your nutritional or brewer's yeast from the bulk bins, even though they usually have high-quality nutritional yeast flakes in them.  Why not?  Well, because B vitamins (which are wonderfully rampant in nutritional/brewer's yeast) are easily destroyed/lose their potency with exposure to light and heat, and those bulk bins are transparant.  You should also never cook/heat nutritional or brewer's yeast.  Instead add it to hot foods once you remove them from the stove/oven, such as soups (which it is wonderful in!), sauces, stir-fries, or even popcorn, which I can't have but which in my mind and heart will always be the classic way to have nutritional yeast, as that is how it was first introduced to me, back in college.  Somebody made a big batch of popcorn with butter, brewer's yeast and salt.  When I tasted it, I thought I'd died and gone to heaven!  What IS this?!  I had to know!  The answer came back "brewer's yeast".  I thought it was one of the most wonderful, delicious, heavenly things I'd ever tasted.  It was love at first yeast!
