I'm new with various long-standing health issues I'm trying to resolve and hoping to find some answers with the BTD or GTD. Can anyone tell me why the Nomad diet shows almonds are beneficial, yet almond milk is to be avoided? Also, coconut oil is beneficial, yet coconut meat and milk are to be avoided? One more. If I follow the BTD, Bs have trouble with lectins, yet the BTD says spelt is okay even though it has lectins. Do any of you know answers to these questions? Thank you. |

Most foods contain lectins. But not all lectins are the same. So while B may react strongly to some lectins, other lectins type Bs do not react to. A lot of blood type diet is avoiding the lectins that cause your blood type's blood to agglutinate. Dr. D. has done the work for you. So you do not have to learn a lot of specific lectins and what foods contain those lectins. Instead you have an easy to use list of foods that he has determined what lectins are in them and if your blood type reacts to those foods. Sometimes the processing causes an avoid. Not all parts of a food are equal in the avoid department. An egg hasn’t developed the lectin that makes chicken an avoid. The coconut oil may not contain the same amount of lectin that the coconut meat does. Different parts of a food react differently with your body. Like C_sharp says, Dr D has done the work in figuring that out. |

And what happens to beets...going from whole beets to juice...that puts juice into avoid column (the quantity?) |

Different nutrient profile.
Also a different set of foods to compare against.
It's both simple and complex at the same time!

For me per SWAMI, both are Superfoods, although the beet is a Diamond - so just a bit better. |

When foods get processed, it changes how the body reacts to those foods. When you turn beets into beet juice, almonds into almond milk, or coconuts into coconut oil, you're removing some parts of the food and concentrating other parts of the food.
In some cases, this processing makes the food healthier for you, because you've removed something your body has trouble with and concentrated nutrients your body can use. In other cases, you've removed nutrients your body needs, and concentrated things that your body has trouble with.
For example, if almonds are neutral and almond milk is an avoid, then the almond fiber is important for you to properly assimilate the rest of the almond. Homemade almond milk, with the fiber filtered out, would still be an avoid (though a subtle one, and it's probably a reasonable item to "cheat" with once in a while.) But if you make almond milk by blending almond butter with water, and don't filter anything out, that should be fine.
Lectins are altogether different. All foods have lectins. Not all lectins hurt every person. The lectins in spelt are OK for Nomads (though spelt still needs to be avoided by Nomads with Celiac Disease or gluten sensitivity.) The lectins in spelt will hurt me, an O non-secretor Gatherer, but they won't hurt you, a B Nomad. Meanwhile, you get navy beans as a diamond superfood- the lectins found in that food do something beneficial for your body. I have navy beans as an avoid, because those lectins (or something else in the bean) are not good for my body. |
