Hey,

Bananas are a diamond for me. However, would it be fair to say that despite this, eating them (or any potentially faster releasing sugars for that matter) without something to slow down the carbohydrate release, is not advisable? I know from a 'one size suits all' approach that this would be the case, but as I'm a hunter and that bananas are on my super beneficial list, maybe this doesn't interpret the same?  

If it's of any help, I like to have them in a smoothie with soya milk and other lower carb fruits, such as cherries or blueberries. I appreciate that these will help (soya milk), though I have been known to have more than one banana in a medium sized smoothie.

I typically don't concern myself with how I eat Diamonds or Superfoods, unless I get some unpleasant feedback.  I will then work to determine whether it is a healing response or a something I should be concerned about.  If I find I need to moderate the response in some manner, then I look at smaller portion size or food combining to see if either of these help.

Bananas are on my Swami list but if I eat more than 1 or 2 a month, my digestive system gets all out of whack.

As you stated, you are an individual and if bananas give to problems, cut down or eliminate them.

I also cannot have banana 'by itself'.

I try to have something like a few nuts or a small piece of flax bread. Even rutabaga will work.

My personal unexpected experience: Literally, bananas are diamonds in my Swami. They make an excellent comfort food, and I used to swallow them by quartets, 4 pieces at a time.

4 years ago I underwent a vega-tester assessment, which advised me NOT to have them.     In time, I gradually trained myself to admit that bananas do give me heartburn, that they are "not ideal" (to say the least) for my bowel movements, and that all in all, they are not that beneficial for me. So I reduced the portions to 1 at the time.  This didn't help, it didn't work for me.  So, I trained myself not to buy them, until I gave them up completely, which contributed a lot to peacefulness in my belly. I get my comfort, sugars, and potassium somewhere else.

I used to have a banana smoothy with different fruit and ground flax seeds every afternoon. I would get a headache, but it wasn't until an IgG blood test that I found out that I shouldn't have bananas. Then I found out they are also an avoid on my Swami.

They balance gut flora on Type O, so it isn't a surprise that you may respond to them.

Hunters don't particularly have problems with carbohydrates as carbohydrates, they just don't need that much.

Your bodies ability to handle carbohydrates well, or blood sugar, will increase as you balance gut flora, stress, and get enough protein. Hence bananas as diamonds means the balance they promote will vastly out weigh any problems with them (normally).

They are neutral for me, but I don't really care that much for them. I can't have them during ragweed season as they have a enzyme which enhances ragweed "hay fever"

I don't understand how the title of this thread fits.  But for most diet's my answer is "no" Even swamix might need to be adjusted according to each person.

I would worry about the soya milk, above bananas, Azure Agony. Soy contains anti-nutrients which blocks calcium and other nutrients absorption. It also interferes with hormonal balance. http://articles.mercola.com/si.....-health-effects.aspx

Soy is not healthful for anyone, unless it has undergone some form of fermentation (i.e tempeh or soy sauce) to break down the problematic elements. Even then it is still high in photoestrogens.

Why not almond or hemp milk?

I have not seen this in Dr. D.'s writings...  If he agreed, Soybeans or soybean meal would not be beneficial or neutral for anyone.

Well I write this on a thread previously and Dr D made a comment, which didn't disagree. I can't remember whether the thread was titled something to do with soya unfortunately. Dr D is only one man and he can't be expected to get absolutely everything right! Research it yourself.

I would not eat soy, unless I sprouted it myself.

Bananas are a diamond for me also, but have found out recently, they make me fat. Have incluced one small or 1/2 of  large one in my daily am protein shake and have developed a muffin top. So sad because I really love bananas. Will try them again in a few months.

I'm guessing that you're following the Hunter diet in the book, rather than a personalized SWAMI? The "book diets" almost always need tweaking. Every person has slightly different dietary needs, yet there are only 6 genotypes!

So use the book as a  guideline, but listen to your body and make adjustments  based on how foods make you feel. Do this with specific foods as well as with portion sizes and frequencies.

For example, the book states "at least 3 cups" of fruits per day for Hunters and Gatherers, yet my own SWAMI tells me to limit fruits to half a cup a day. This makes perfect sense to me, as the sugars from fruits lead to blood sugar swings. I can't ever eat a piece of fruit by itself; it needs to be with some nuts, cheese, or eggs if I'm going to feel good after eating it.

If you're using the Hunter diet from the book, bear in mind that "milk, soy" is listed as an avoid (not a "black dot") under "beverages." You're better off adding a compliant protein powder (egg white, rice, and/or pea protein) to your smoothies instead. Even coconut milk and almond milk are "black dots" meaning that some Hunters can tolerate them just fine, some can't tolerate them at all, and some can handle having them once in a while. Either of those beverages would be a better choice than the soy. Also experiment with "green smoothies" or "brown smoothies"; adding green veggies to the smoothie in place of part of the fruit.

I personally can't consume 2 bananas plus berries in one sitting without getting sick. But I'm not you- the real question is how do you feel after having all that fruit at once? My daughters can have that much fruit in a smoothie and feel fine, although they will want something with protein either alongside it or an hour or so after finishing the smoothie.

Thank you all for the replies, and sorry I haven't got back to the thread sooner - not uncommon for me.  

@ Jane - almond milk is a worthy consideration, though over here in England, a lot of the brands chuck in loads of undesirable ingredients. Unfortunately, it's also expensive. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I would think that the soya would lower the overall index of the smoothie, though maybe not as much as I would like. I could start adding ground almonds - something that I've tried recently, which was ok. Also, not forgetting the appearance of the banana : if it's slightly green then it will register low / medium (at the most) on the g.i. index. The bananas with age spots are the faster releasing ones.

It's easy to make your own almond milk, although a bit time consuming. Adding water and almond butter to your smoothie is far simpler- you don't need a "smooth milk" when blending with fruits into a thick shake.

My daughter can follow her SWAMI by avoiding all the avoids, treating "black dots" as neutrals, adding in cultured dairy products, and having about 2 ounces of whole milk per day, plus being casual with her food lists when eating away from home. Meanwhile, I need to be super-careful and avoid even trace amounts of  certain"avoids" in my food. The "black dot" spices I can have once a week, but most of my "black dot" foods are things to eat only a few times a year, in small amounts.

How does soy rate for you personally? Are any dairy products neutral or better?

Yeah, the time taken to make almond milk puts me off somewhat.

Butter, ghee and kefalotyri cheese (which I've never seen in my supermarket) are superfoods, while farmer cheese (no idea what that is), feta, mozzarella and pecorino are neutrals. Havarti and Port de Salut are black dots, though like with some other varities, I've not seen it for sale. Soya is a black dot, though I seem to do just fine on it, be it yoghurt, block or liquid form.

Total BS. Also Mercola is a Fadster. Lame, inaccurate.

I'd rather get in a fist fight over Soy being an immense benefit to BT A than silly things like mother insults.

If I eat soy for breakfast, by lunch I can see discrete benefits (not all of them obviously) .

Me too! Bananas are a diamond on my Hunter swami, but if I eat half of one more than once a week, my digestive system really goes haywire! They taste great, but don't agree with me for some reason.
