Hi!
I asked my doctor for nystatin powder because I read good things about it. I also have a slight oral thrush.
But on the bottle it says that "Nystop" (which my doctor prescribed me) is for external use only? Is this the wrong medication? Is it safe for oral use? If it isn't safe, what is the brand name of the nystatin powder that we can take orally? |

nystop = Nystatin + Topical
Lozenges and oral suspensions are used for oral fungal infections, but powders can be as well.
Some brands for oral versions:
Bio-Statin Mycostatin Suspension Nadostine Nadostine Sucrose-Free Nilstat Drops Nilstat Powder Nyaderm Pms-Nystatin
Personally it is the Nystatin in Nystop that I would be concerned about and that is in all the products listed above.
Nystatin works by punching holes in cell membranes. This causes the cells to leak.

Is it bad if the cells leak? Don't we want to kill the yeast? Also, if the immune system takes care of the yeast naturally, won't the yeast cells leak then as well? Confused |

If they have figured out a way to get Candida out of our bodies intact, I definitely want to hear all about it!!! And I am not being facetious! |

It is very very simple.
Cell meets nystatin molecules.
Nystatin pokes holes in the cell's membrane.
Cell leaks contents.
Cell dies.

I have been well-acquainted with Candida, as I have posted numerous times on the forum, for many years. I know how Nystatin works because I took it for over two years. At one point I was taking 4 heaping teaspoons of the pure stuff every single day.
Maybe your post was simply a choice of words that was confusing. |

That is exactly what I thought. I was trying to give the benefit of any doubt, however. |

(Shaking my head and trying to understand.) Are you saying by your "concern" remark that you are not a fan of Nystatin in any version, and there are other options that might be more appropriate? I could not agree with you more if that is what you were indicating by your "explanation." I am not at all sure whether this is what you meant or not. I am certainly glad that I am not needing either it or any other form of medication to get rid of Candida overgrowth at the present.
But someone with thrush is in dire need of direction of some sort. Maybe the links Lola provided will help........... |

I like C_sharp's explanation of how nystatin works, but I want to know why leaking yeast cells are harmful. Is there something harmful that is being leaked into the gut? And, if so, what is it? |

Nystop is nystatin dispersed in talcum powder. The statement about external use I presume is from the talcum powder.
Normally people do not eat talcum powder because because it irritates the digestive tract. If talcum powder is not contaminated with asbestos it is probably not the most desirable substance for living cells. But in comparison with nystatin which is used to kill cells talcum powder seems rather benign to me.
Nystatin drugs designed for internal use (rinses, lozenges, pills) are unlikely to include any talc. Esthetically they are probably more appealing to treat oral thrush than nystatin on talcum powder.
Antibiotics and antifungal drugs are designed to kill cells. Obviously, the hope is they kill the parasite before they kill the host. |

We want the candida cells to leak, because it leads to their death. The problem is it cause other cells to leak to. Nystatin is what I use in the lab when I want the blood cells in a sample to burst so that I can analyze the contents of the cells. The physics professor use nystatin in his lab when the membranes are not allowing enough things to flow through. He adds nystatin until he gets the "right" number of holes. |

I think he means any cells not just the target cells. |

Being a little more wordy in the first explanation would have saved a lot of time. People who don't work in labs wouldn't know, necessarily, that Nystatin could mess up a whole lot of stuff that it shouldn't - like breaking open good cells. I always knew that any antibiotic was apt to do damage of one sort or another, but people take them anyway to keep from getting killed off by something even worse. Anyway, I managed to survive two years of the stuff and am healthier than most people my age!
Nystatin didn't do half the damage that all those antibiotics did that I took that caused the Candida problem in the first place. But that is another story about some of those doctors that we have been acquainted with in the past!
Yes, I was taking caprylic acid and the whole kit and caboodle of stuff that was recommeded by the doctor who did the original studies on Candida overgrowth - many things that you don't hear a lot about today, plus the current ones - he was into using natural products every way possible. My doctor was in contact with him during my treatment. No doubt, that is the reason for my success without too much damage from Nystatin. We were spending, over $150 a month for this stuff over twenty years ago, besides the humongous amount our insurance was paying! I got the Candida under control, though, so it was worth every penny!!! |

and we should not forget candida loves sugar thingies and matches very well with amalgam as well.... so no treatment will really take grip if amalgam isn't taken out.... |

You are so right about the amalgam. Dentists were fighting the idea tooth and nail back when I had mine out. No pun intended! No precautions whatsoever were taken as they drilled away to remove it. I survived it though. And sugar......! The number two enemy of any chances of getting Candida under control. Number one if a person doesn't have amalgam! |
