I am planning on working through the items in the Genotype kit that I can do while my fingerprints heal. I tasted one the of taster strips and I could taste something not good, you wouldn't choose to taste it, but it wasn't unbearable. Does that mean I classify as a taster? Just looking for input from those that have done it! Thanks! |

Labrat, I qualify as a SuperTaster. I could taste that strip hours later; it tasted the same as the second minute after I put the darn strip in my mouth! No exagerations. It was over four hours before the taste had noticeably faded. You are a taster. |

Thanks, Paul, it was definitely gone in 10 minutes. I'm glad I didn't have to taste it for 4 hours! |

I just ordered the taster strips. What is the significance of knowing your taster status, other than helping you to refine your genotype? I assume this is for SWAMI inputting? |

not sure how it would affect food values inside of a specific genotype, however it can help nail down a genotype. Tasters and super tasters tend to show up more often in teachers and explorers for example. |

Quoted Text
Dr. D Sometimes taster status is a big deal, especially if it sets off other findings which were ignored as part of the previous genotype determination.

The GenoType Diet book p 51 discusses Taster Status (p 83 tells about the test).
page 51 "...non-tasters may suffer from low thyroid function, perhaps because the chemicals involved in the tasting are thyroid inhibitors."
Non-tasters can't taste the thyroid inhibiting chemicals in foods. Can you see how this causes trouble? So it's a good idea to find out your taster status especially if you already suspect you have thyroid problems. Then one could limit or avoid the troublesome foods.
Evidently it's a genetic trait more typically associated with Gatherers ("almost always non-tasters") and Warriors ("non-tasters or super-tasters"). But some of us aren't your typical bear. |

Non Tasters often have under active Thyroid; for them Soy, Peanuts and some vegetables can be a problem. PROP Taster: http://www.dadamo.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?m-1203200176/s-new/#num8list of PROP Taster qualities/propensities. Tasters are more prone to low thyroid. One study has found that non-smokers and those not habituated to coffee or tea have a statistical higher percentage of tasters than the general population. Tasters develop more rapidly at puberty Super tasters avoid bitter vegetables making them more prone to certain cancers. Non tasters more prone to toxic goiters and over activity of the thyroid gland. non tasters suffer from low thyroid..under activity of the thyroid Super tasters have a higher ration of muscle to fat and have fewer weight problems and this is often why they are hunters or explorers. Also they tend to develop more rapidly at puberty then non tasters http://www.dadamo.com/wiki/wiki.pl/PROP_and_PTC_Taster_Polymorphisms |

Interesting, Lola. I've had my thyroid checked a couple of times, and both times the blood work came back "normal" for thyroid function. I did not develop rapidly at puberty - much more on the slow side in fact, was pretty late getting my first period (15). At thirteen, I looked about ten. At eighteeen I could pass for about thirteen to fifteen. At thirty, I looked about eighteen to twenty. Let's not talk about now...negligence has caught up to me, but thank goodness I've wound up here at BTD. I HATE bitter vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, bitter greens, broccoli rabe, etc.)...have to force myself to eat them without gagging, and would never choose them over other green vegetables like string beans or asparagus, or escarole and kale, which are milder flavored. I might be a taster or supertaster who developed slowly at puberty, or a non-taster without thyroid issues. We'll see. As you say, we're not all the average bear. Thanks for the GT book excerpts. I brought that one back to the library but I've been re-reading my LRFYT book, and I'm picking up more. Learning is a cycle, so re-reading is essential. |

Ew. I would consider asparagus more of a bitter flavor than broccoli. Isn't that weird? |

I've tested Super Taster. I think. I haven't tasted anything that vile in...ever? It tastes like a chemical poison, like tasting a pesticide or something. Have you ever been in a confined space with someone who had so much perfume on that you could actually taste it? Well, that tastes good compared to this. I've been trying to scrape it off my tongue with a paper napkin. I haven't gagged on it, but I'm used to forcing down foods like broccoli while keeping a smile on my face. I don't think I need to do this test again. |

| Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU! |

I think I'm confused now. When I tasted the strip I thought it was extremely bitter, but it did not last too long. I also tend to like bitter tasting veggies like broccoli (although I swear I can tell the difference between organic and conventionally grown) and broccoli raab I find very, very bitter but I eat it anyway because it's a diamond for me. I didn't develop early, although people often thought I was older than I was, hmmm. |
