Probably has been done before, although I haven't seen it on the boards.

I am curious if genotype influences the liking of sweet food. I could mabey do one for savoury as well.

I also wonder how much these preferences are related to our gut flora? Well, don't think that's an easy answer. But, who knows mabey soon...

I always had a sweet tooth, and always craved salt.  The sweet tooth is almost gone, just once in a while, it hits me, (but maybe that is because, I had the last of my teeth pulled out, a while, ago)hahaha

Seriously, the protein intake helps to get rid of the sweet tooth, and I don't worry about the salt too much, as I switched to sea salt, and don't need it as often as I did regular salt.

I always connect these two together, for some reason, not sure why.

Wonder if taster status has more influence?

I don't have a sweet tooth. Maybe because sweets have always left me feeling icky

My Teacher husband has a whole mouth full of sweet teeth though, lol.

My hunter Nonnie Son and I have the nastiest sweet tooth known to man.  We would prefer a dinner of dark chocolate with a side of prime rib and a coffee chaser, no vegetables thank you.

My other Hunter Son (sec) is more of a dairy fan.  He would drink chocolate milk even though it would induce vomiting within about 30 minutes (I still can't believe that took me so many years to figure out).

My A warrior sec husband used to be a dairy boy, but I think he really loves the taste of red wine (still can't figure that one out)

Not necessarily, I have two super taster friends that love, sweet. Sweet to the point that it would make someone else sick, they are both overweight. Both have messed up bowel flora, not sure how high the breathe hydrogen was for them.

Gut bacteria plays a role here too, I posted a study that stated that gut bacteria crave sweet, probably triggers hormonal responses that get us craving sweet. Leptin might be involved?

I think it is more complicated then GT.

I also used to have a sweet tooth, which has virtually disappeared with the GTD. When I had a minor 'attack' last week, I was able to satisfy it with some pureed prunes mixed into a sweetener free basmati rice pud. My Type A, Teacher (yet to be verified) husband on the other hand, who follows a non BTD/GTD, but reasonably healthy diet (quite in line with his GT incidentally) has a very sweet tooth and is always longing for Nigella Lawson chocolate brownies..

I haven't included the 'No' response as there were only 10 poll question options.

"We would prefer a dinner of dark chocolate with a side of prime rib and a coffee chaser, no vegetables thank you." Once in a while, why not, breaks the 'monotony' of beef stew with sweet potatoes..?

Although the poll indicates an 'O' connection, esp Hunter sweet tooth, from the written responses it appears that things aren't that straightforward, possibly, yes, because other factors like individual gut flora, type of diet or upbringing play a part. However, if each genotype has a more specific gut bacteria composition and GTD brings the natural flora in line for genotype, with larger data and a GTD compliant population of at least 3 months some trends might be observed...

Sweet tooth.

Sed if you want to measure Genotypes that can be sweet tooths, just count the number of allowed "sugars"

Gatherers have the least access to sweets - not a big surprise!  All the rest base Genotypes are about equal.

I definitely have a sweet tooth, but I can get into a rhythm with the GTD where I can resist sweets a lot of the time. I tend to think some fruit-flavored foods are usually too sweet, like raspberry or lemon frozen yogurt tend to taste much sweeter than they should to me. I do like sweet veggies, but I find that I generally like to have a dinner that is pretty savory. I need salt, big time, but I don't know that I LOVE the taste. I guess I crave it from a physiological rather than taste-based stand point.

If I let myself eat chocolate, it can turn into an addiction in no time. It is not on my SWAMI.

The poll could perhaps be improved by creating the following options:

Had a sweet tooth before starting GTD

Had no sweet tooth before starting GTD

Hunter, 3 month compliancy, have sweet tooth/ have no sweet tooth

Hunter, 6 month compliancy, have sweet tooth/ have no sweet tooth

Hunter 1+ year compliancy, have sweet tooth/ have no sweet tooth

Same for all other genotypes

And there is the problem of how to define sweet tooth. Like sweet flavours or I eat them for enjoyment or I can't exist without having any? Also, sweet flavours of what, fruit, veg, sweeteners, sugars other carb?

But probably if one has a sweet tooth in the classic sense of the word, one knows it. No precise definition is needed.

Red Wine is a SF for Warrior...  That may explain it!

I like some dark chocolate, but definitely do not have a sweet tooth.  I cut the sugar in most recipes in about half to where my Teacher family members think it needs more and I think it could still have less!

There is also at what time of day? I find I don't need something sweet until mid afternoon to evening. So I'm wondering if it is when some nutrition is dipping, chromium or something?  And yes agree with comments about state of gut makes a difference, and if we are talking sugar that is definitely addictive for me.

I said I have a sweet tooth, but I don't like things super sweet, but I LOVE dark chocolate, maybe it's really just a chocolate tooth. There is a direct association between protein deficiency and sugar craving, I was once told by a bio-chemist sort of  a person. Sugars give the cell the fuel that protein does, but not for as long. It takes about three days of enough protein to shut off sugar cravings. SInce Hunters have such a high protein need it would make sense that more of them have sweets on the mind.....

i like the occasonal sweet but if you give me a choise of sour over sweet i will probly go for the sour. i mostly like chocolat, i never cared for hard candy and it always made me mad that all the pastery places had to cover every thing in goo  (a.k.a. white suger frosting)   if they just left it as pastery with fruit or cream cheese i would probly have been a fatter person.

I voted "yes", but here's the real story. Prior to going on the Teacher's diet...prior to doing a SWAMI I was a lifetime sugarholic. I kept myself from indulging in sugar all day but it took effort.  I wanted desserts more than food. As a child I craved sweets...Sweets never affected my weight, but it certainly affected my mood.

OK, fast forward to my Teacher's SWAMI since September.  I now eat no refined sugar whatsoever anymore
and that's basically because I do my own baking and it's gluten free. So, I never have the opportunity
to eat other people's baked goods and that's where most of the sugar would be.  Chocolate is a black
dot on my SWAMI.  I use small amounts of honey and a little molasses but I'm not craving those
types of sugars..  The thought of eating sweet food isn't predominantly on my mind anymore.  Baked apples are sweet.  Prunes and dates are sweet...That's about as sweet as my foods are.

And I find if I mix a bunch of different flavors into a meal....sweet, salty, bitter, pungent, sour, I'm satisfied.

My SWAMI diet cured my sugar cravings.

Oh, yeah, I know starchy foods turn to sugar within half an hour of consumption. I do my best to limit them, and only have them with plenty of protein and a bit of fat. But it's still a starch craving, not a sugar craving. Eating sugar messes up my blood sugar within a few minutes of eating it, while starches leave me hungry an hour later but don't give me any obvious sugar rushes. Eating too much sugar makes me feel physically ill, while starch just makes me feel good, especially if I keep eating more every hour. Of course I gain tons of weight that way, and I don't eat that way anymore.

When I am pretty compliant my need for sweet(s) disappears but when I get stressed or tired (or bored) the craving comes back. It totally depends on the sweets, I don't care for chocolate but I adore things like nougat and anything with coconut.

So my best answer is yes. Because it's probably something I will have to deal with the rest of my life. But I can control it somewhat by being compliant.

Nope, no sweet tooth here.  They make me sick to my stomach.  In our house growing up all the sweets went bad.  The cakes, ice cream was freezer burnt... Mom was always throwing stuff out.
Do like dark chocolate; can't stand the other stuff.  Way too grainy.

I have realized for me personally that if I eat something that is on my avoid that I than crave sugar after. I have found that we don't "crave" things that are good for us. I eat the good things because I know they are good for me, but I don't believe there is such a thing as a "healthy craving". I think cravings have to do with addictions and addictions are connected with lectin damage. I've been thinking a lot about this recently. Especially since I'm pregnant and so many pregnant women claim to have such crazy cravings for things. What have I craved? Anything on my avoid list... hence the realization.

Did I have a sweet tooth before I followed my BTD or GTD explicitly? HECK YA!!! Just thinking about certain sweet foods will cause me a chemical reaction of endorphins to flow. Do I eat them? HECK NO!!! Because I know if I do it will make my body ache, I'll feel sick, my bowels will almost completely stop or I'll get IBS from it.

What a difference being on a solid BTD or GTD makes to a persons belief systems about foods!

I have to disagree. I do crave healthy things. It doesn't happen often, but I often buy my veggies based on what I want that evening. Brussels sprouts is one of those things I can really look forward too.

I get cravings (demands) for foods (or supplements) the body needs...  I sometimes find I need to go through the cupboards to determine what I'm needing, but I can usually find it and most of the time, it is a beneficial that I need.  I no longer get avoid cravings!

I need to explain what I mean by "healthy cravings". A craving to me is something that you feel so compelled to eat that you overeat on it. There is nothing on my superfood list or highly beneficial that I ever have a desire to overeat on.

Having things that you enjoy eating as opposed to things that you get an addictive response to when you eat it... that is the difference for me. I hope that explains what I meant. I personally never feel like if I don't get a grapefruit I'll throw a temper tantrum or get irritable like someone does that is actually addicted to something like sugar.

For some of us here I think we are so used to being healthy and eating the right things that you don't remember what it feels like to actually feel addicted to certain foods or maybe you never have.

I was watching a young girl standing infront of a pop machine last week. She was very overweight and under 8 years old. The desperation and look on her face of "craving" and "addiction" of wanting that pop was not the look of someone hungry or starving for nourishment. It was that of addiction. I would actually call it "Lectin addiction".

My demands are different than you describe, because I remember those as well; which is why I noted it as demands...

That being said, I can't ignore the "symptoms" as they provide much of the same drive to fulfill.  Yes, the body only demands what it needs - but the force with which it demands it is very consuming until dealt with fully!

ABJoe - That makes sense to call them "demands" I can relate to that. I do feel strongly the urge to eat or drink something that is healthy. Like every once in a while I think, "Wow, wouldn't some fresh sushi be awesome right now???" My favorites have always been salmon and red snapper nigiri. Go figure! Perfect foods for my type. When it comes to avoid foods though is what I would call addictive cravings. For some reason I personally only see "cravings" in terms of it being addictive in nature. Probably due to my years of counseling clients and seeing how they craved certain foods that would only cause them pain. Like my O blood type client that was addicted to dairy and gluten. Every week he would come in and be aching from head to toe from the toxic damage he was putting himself through.
I have a sister who is drug and alcohol addicted. She gets cravings for drugs and alcohol, and than has cravings for foods that are only listed as avoids for all blood and geneotypes. I don't know her blood type and knowing it wouldn't help until she actually has a desire to change. I pray that day will come sooner than later though.

I suppose since A's get more carbs to start with, we can better control where they come from. A carb is a carb.

I would surmise that most of the O cravings are really a demand for energy, but it gets fulfilled with sugar rather than a beneficial fat.  Once it has been fulfilled in that manner once, the brain automatically associates that food with the need, so future demands trigger that self-destructive "need".  If the person fulfills the need with a beneficial several times, the brain realizes that this is a better plan and demands the beneficial in a more correct amount...

Again, it goes back to knowing the body's needs and fulfilling them with beneficials...

My taste changed when I gave up processed sugar. Used to eat Hershey's Kisses everytime I visited my husband's family business. Total Pavlov response. Go to the business, down a handful of chocolate.

Gave up the processed sugar. Went in. Thought, one will be alright. I spit that thing out. Nasty sweet. Broke the link.

Still like pure ground chocolate nibs, honey, ghee every now and then. Put a recipe on here for dab of chocolate or something like that.

I'm also a supertaster. My bent toward eating the more bitter veggies has gotten better too. Theorize that I was too bent to the sweet side before.

Kind of. I don't usually get a lot of downtime. I guess I was inspired yesterday because I took the day off to poke around. I thought adding a few things here and there would be nice if they were helpful to people.

Pay it forward from all I got from the conference, you know.

Christaalyssa,

I am an A+ with the same cravings as your O client. I am currently avoiding all dairy, wheat and yeast to see if it helps with my chronic sinus problems. Wheat free, yeast free "cardboard" is not the same as delicious artisan bread!!!!! There really is no substitute for yummy French cheese, either. Its been 3 weeks and I am SOOOOO craving a piece of good toast! Naturally, I love chocolate, fresh fruit crisps, pies, and anything coffee or caramel.

A sweet tooth may just be another manifestation of impulse control issues that are common to O's

(Hunters & Explorers that is.  Gatherers have a different relationship to sweet foods.)

I never had a stron sweet tooth, however, if I eat too much fruit this starts to happen.

I need to get the swami done so I can see how much fruit I should be eating.
Right now, I can have one pear a day and be fine.. sometimes, I go without any fruit all day. However, I think fruit is healthy and it will assist in flushing out the toxins.

When everyone speaks of sugar and sweets, are you referring to fruits as well? I never crave any other sugar (processed items)

I agree. I voted yes, but as a gatherer I just like food. On BTD I've learned to love my foods (and that means less sugar, gluten types food)  I think also the statement that sugar is  "quick energy"  learned by O type, often as children. We learn I can fix my energy needs, quickly with sugar. I have learned now to use protein.

Lots of positive co-processes that the animal protein triggers on the ways down.  Supporting IAP levels, promoting lean muscle mass, fat soluable nutrients, ammino acids, are a few that come to mind.

Protein is the opposite of sugar as food cravings go for O's.

Actually, this is one of the things that really turned me towards the genotype diet.  I do not have a sweet tooth.  It'd be a potato or a milky sauce or something like that (or a great beer) that would pull me off track.  Getting the lists was amazing.  I didn't do sweets, because they were "bad", and I didn't really miss them, but I now find myself throughly enjoying things tinged with a bit of agave or honey that are totally diamond-driven.  My cravings were always for other toxics.

Yes, I have a sweet tooth but I've learned (over and over again), that fulfilling that sweet tooth only makes it worse, to the point of not stopping. If I don't eat sugar, I don't crave it. Same with wheat, can't stop, even when full and feeling sick. I still look for more food. Its disgusting.  It usually doesn't taste as good as I think it's going to and it then becomes a physical craving. My moms an A and chocolate is her middle name. Man, can she put that stuff away! watching her really helps me stay away from it.

I have a weakness for cookies, especially chocolate chip cookies.  I have to be careful to not go through them too quickly.  If i have a coffee or tea i made, i will eat three or four after a meal, then eat a few as a snack, then have a few more after my next meal.  I don't seem to gain any weight from them, but i am still pretty young.

I love cookies too...but that's really it...not much of a sweet tooth because I cut sugar out of my diet about 8 years ago. I'd rather have some potato chips or a warm ham and cheese croissant...

I have a hard time controlling sweet so best to avoid.  (wheat treats)

I have found small Chocolat Coconut Maccaroons at whole foods.   No wheat at all - these I can eat.
I have one with a cup of tea or after a meal and I'm fine.

When I'm compliant  -  I don't crave sweets

I've had better control the last 10 years then I did in my  20s but sure I like a small bit if chocolate & go through cycles with dried fruit etc.  I drank a lot of wine last few years always paired with chocolate, not great for my moods or blood sugar.  I try to keep stevia around & have that on healthy foods like kefir or oatmeal.  I've generally outgrown cookies & ice cream-- the occasional pastry with wine is about it for me these days.  And ok I sprinkle zane currants on my food also.  Fine I have a sweet tooth!

I am fine if I don't have anything sweet

Once I get a taste of something it's hard to stop eating it.....I do my best to pass on dessert when I'm at a party.....holiday's are the hard part....but it's more about enjoying the "traditions" with my sisters that I love so much...the sista time

What I've done to combat this is I have something sweet like honey before I head out to the gym....that way I don't feel deprived and it gives me a boost of energy for my work out

I have an incredible sweet tooth! From healthier sweet stuff like fruit and yoghurt, to unhealthy stuff like lollies, chocolate, ice cream, biscuits, cakes. Every day, every meal, and snacks too - I'm always eating something sweet. I prefer sweet vegetables like capsicum, peas, carrot and lettuce to other more savory veggies. I never have cravings for crisps or other salty/savory snacks. I've probably eaten 100g of chocolate every day for most of my adult life. Now that I've found out that I'm a teacher, it looks like I better switch to carob! Preferably sweetened with vegetable glycerine or honey...  fingers crossed I can find something like that!

I keep carob walnut brownies and almond flour cookies in my freezer.  The portions are small and if I just want a bite of something sweet after a meal, these work out well.  Bonus is they are diamonds on my Swami!

You can put all kinds of good compliant ingredients in the almond flour cookies, what ever you like and can have.  I never thought I would like carob, but I just love it.  DH is sold on it too.

I have a monster sweet tooth.  It seems to run in both sides of my family, which was probably encouraged by a southern culture where super sweet desserts are endemic.  I read in the past that people in warm climates do eat more sweet foods.  I don't know whether or not that's true.  I went to a family reunion on the Gulf coast and the dessert table was like a separate meal in itself, lasting into the afternoon (Gosh, re-reading that, it sounds weird, like a Roman orgy.  It wasn't quite like that, just that the desserts were not cleared away and people kept picking into the afternoon).  I hope there are lots of bakeries and chocolate shops in Heaven - and no repercussions!     And I hope I get there!

I have cut waaaay back on my sugar consumption (and eliminated wheat and corn), but I still crave sweets sometimes.  Eating lots of veggies helps, but I don't think I will ever fall out of love with desserts and really good chocolate.  Just have to keep a muzzle on that monsta and only let him out for holidays.  We're going to NOLA in November and that is going to be challenging.

Mayflowers, don't despair..... I have a really bad sweet tooth    I can eat many chocolate bars a day and not turn a hair   . I'm still getting organised to follow the GTD (using up everything in my pantry) and it may be that my sweet tooth will subside in time (gosh I hope it does.... as at the moment all I have to do is think of chocolate and I can't get it out of my head......) but I doubt that it will disappear altogether. I've had a sweet tooth ever since I was a kid.

I think you will see that if you follow your GTD diet as compliantly as possible the sweet cravings will begin to abate in time.  They may not totally go away.  I think sugar addiction is hard to break, as difficult as nicotine addiction.  At least in my case sugar is addictive.  I eat far less chocolate than I used to.  I used to be able to eat chocolate for breakfast.  My DH was so amazed by that when we first knew each other.  He tried hiding the chocolate from me so I couldn't do that.    He soon learned not to get between me and my chocolate!  I also could (and often did) eat leftover birthday cake or pie with a cup of coffee and call that breakfast.    So I have come a loooong way.  I have not completely eliminated sugar from my diet, but I have vastly reduced it just by following my swami and not eating prepared packaged foods that are also loaded with sugars.  And eliminating wheat (no packaged breads, no cookies, no bakery pies or cakes) has eliminated sugar from those sources.

There was a day last week I thought about having some chocolate (out of habit), and I realized that I didn't really have a taste for it after all.  That was a first!    But, in the back of my mind, like a true addict, I always have a little inkling, a little itch, for the sweet.  I'm getting better at recognizing it and managing it, but it's still there.  I feel like I could easily fall off the wagon and have a good 48 hour sweets binge, lock myself in a hotel room or something - ice cream, pastries, capuccino with sugar, cookies, chocolate covered marzipan, butterfingers, snickers bars, all of it.  It would probably make me sick, but I feel like I would have a great time doing it.  I guess I just won't go there.

I do try to stay compliant other than that...red beans and rice, meatless jambalya, fresh fish and veggies.Yummo!

Homemade, gooey, chewy chocolate chip or peanut butter cookies ....I want after dinner!

I've always had a sweet tooth.  By eating compliantly, it's still there, but much less noticeable than when I was eating a wheat driven diet.  Most of the sweets I craved were in carb form...cookies, cakes, etc.  I still enjoy sweets, but after a week of feeding my body better, I can be satisfied with a small piece of high quality dark chocolate and I don't feel deprived.  Add bennie, chocolate's a superfood!

My sweet tooth permanently went away after I did 34 days in a row on the Master Cleanse. Ever since I finished it, I don't want to eat or drink anything sweet. That was 5 months ago.

CURED!!

Mine has decreased since eliminating grains.  I'm actually loving parsnips and sweet potatoes.

I did the Master Cleanse and lasted 3 days. I hated it! It just made me want to chew food so I could "sweep" clean my digestive system. There is something inherently wrong with not cleaning the digestive system - it's just like cleaning the house - some friction is needed.

Since I eradicated candida 2.5 years ago, no more sweet tooth. I follow SWAMI and rarely eat the honey that is a diamond. Have it to soothe my throat if it's sore. I get stevia but don't want that either. Parsnips, sweet potatoes and carrots are plenty sweet for this tooth now!

Intermittent fasting has more or less "cured" my sweet tooth.

Desserts don't bother me too much EXCEPT my daughter-in-law's pineapple upside down mini-muffins, pecan pie and egg custard. I just don't need to be around those three very often! About twice a year! Of course, I am talking about these three in their traditional versions. SWAMI has thrown pecans back into a black dot for me along with some other items that has me gritting my teeth! Hey, over there, we can't keep throwing out food because of these changes! Most of this stuff is expensive! I spent hours shelling all those nice, fresh pecans, do you hear? I think I am going to stay away from re-running that thing for a while! I don't like the idea of it sticking its nose over my shoulder when I'm eating something that was just fine yesterday but isn't today! ----Just joking, of course!

Same here! I stopped eating sweets after I got braces in my 20s which probably helped keep the candida under control at the time. I would get sweet cravings ever so often but ever since the candida cleanse, I do not have any desire for sweets. I had 2-3 pieces of chocolate a day during Christmas season only because the candy box was in front of me but I do not get strong urges. I had 1-2 jelly beans (yes, a whole package of Jelly Belly would last me about a month or two) a day for about three days while watching t.v. My whole sweet splurge was more out of habit - family sitting around the t.v. with various snacks.

I crave salt more than anything else. I think this is because of my low blood pressure. I came in at 82/60 about a week and half ago.

I crave rice cakes or grain based snacks more than sugary stuff. My recent carb/starch craving was due to eating proteins and veggies without grains for almost a month. My body just wanted a more balanced diet, that is all.

The Doctor I go to, told me when we want something sweet after a meal it can be caused by not having enough digestive enzymes and the body is looking for an expansive food which sugar is.....   I also like something sweet.  Mostly I can satisfy with figs, dates, and peanut butter with jam.

I prefer real food to sweets, but they are addictive.
I rarely had sweets as a young child, so didn't develop the taste for them, but I suspect that if I were raised on them like most kids, I would have a sweet tooth.

If I do crave sweets, it usually is in the morning to eat fruit. I think it is a blood sugar thing as well as the fact that fruit is better on an empty stomach.
(I didn't vote in this poll.)
