I am so confused that ghee, being so high in fat, is a diamond food on my SWAMI.
It seems though that many people on this forum also have it as a diamond food. I am actually scared to even buy it, and worried that I will blow up the scale by consuming *butter.*

Healthy bacteria are the result of consuming Ghee, they are the weight loss factor. Watch the portions recommended..

For Teachers eating too much of anything is hard unless it has caffeine or something... It is all more about making sure you get enough of what you need and then you lose weight. (and omit certain things, like gluten if it bugs you, and red meat)
I guess we are lucky in that respect. There is almost no effort involved.

Any thoughts?
Fat is so maligned and misunderstood in our society, to this day. Consuming certain good/beneficial fats can be a great boon to weight loss, for many reasons, not the least of which is that good fat calms your brain chemistry and keeps you steady and in balance in terms of cravings. Eating the fats, proteins and carbohydrates that are good for your specific type will keep you feeling deeply nourished and in balance. Therefore, you are satisfied and your brain doesn't start producing certain hunger and stress hormones all out of wack/out of balance because it perceives a famine or an overload of simple carbohydrates or both. Ghee sends a message to your brain saying "No need to worry, you are being fed with fat, you are getting what you need to thrive and no need to send a bunch of cravings-inducing hormones cursing through the body because everything is good to go, so just sit there and think deep thoughts, which is your forte."
Don't fear the right fats for your type. They keep you satisfied, feed your brain and calm your brain chemistry/chemical balance, and they are a powerful anti-inflamatory agent throughout your system.

The weirdest part for me was when I realized that I loose weight easier and feel better when I use full fat dairy and eat a fair share of butter and ghee.... so weird after years on low fat high grain diets

Those low fat and high grain based diets are what made us all sick in the first place. The more I ate the way I was taught in nursing school the sicker and fatter I became. Too bad I wasn't smart enought to figure it out.
When we still farmed before the crash in the mid 80's, we raised pork and beef. All meals contained a big slab of meat (good for me, but not hubby) and lots of veggies and fruit. All sweets were homemade and usually contained fruit. I make a killer pie ( used to make them for a restaurant). Milked goats for kids, who puked up formula made from milk or soy as babies, so gave them goat when they got older too. And didn't count grams of fat or fat calories. Wish I had ignored nursing school nutrition.

When I was a kid people always had full fat milk (often raw in the county), we had full fat cheese and yoghurt real butter on all our bread- we had mainly rye bread and whole wheat bread- white bread was for sundays. We had dessert with cream and sweets and sodas were restricted. Our meat was not low fat....- but we had quite alot of veggies with it. so people had less easy carbs and far more fat than today -and guess what??? peoplein Denmark where fitter and less fat than today.
Our developement is 10 years behind USA or so - but we see what the high carb/ light products- low fat - low exercise have done now.... people are getting fatter and fatter......

My body experiences butter and ghee very differently, and because of that, I switched to ghee many years ago. Ghee seems to keep my metabolism revved up, while butter is much heavier.
It is very important to take Dr. D's portion and frequency recommendations to heart. So many people think that if a food is good for them, then more of that food must be better. Moderation is one of the keys to health, along with consistency.

Right. Fat doesn't make you fat. Sugar does. We eat a high-fat diet. Lots of ghee, nuts, olive oil, etc. Very little sugar. Nobody in my family has a weight issue. People watch us wide-eyed when we eat because of the amount we consume and yet stay slim. We eat lots of food, and lots of high-fat food, and love every minute of it. But it's not animal fat (except the ghee). It's vegetable fat. Very good for you.

I too was worried but I was going by the "unlimited ghee" in the book. My SWAMI has me down for 1/2 t 3x week for ALL fats, INCLUDING ghee. So if you have pounds to lose, the all-knowing SWAMI reduces your allowable portions, it seems. Went to the weekly organic farmers market today (yum fresh garlic) and saw for the first time a stand with women selling ghee. $9/16 oz jar. I will continue to make my own (every 6 months at this rate) as it is much less expensive. But I was happy to see the stand, and they were doing a brisk business.

Ribbit, I've been trying to get this through to my "fat phobic" mom for years!!!! She avoids fat like the plague and thinks it's perfectly fine to have her nightly white wine. She's also addicted to diet soda and i've tried to tell her that her body processes artificial sweetners just like it does sugar. She wonders why she's got a belly??????

Ali Tot, If ghee is listed as a diamond then we are to assume that it's unlimited and diamonds are supposed to help us lose weight.

I don't know much about the swami but thought it was supposed to be more tailored to the individual, soo would we still assume that we should cut down our portion sizes?.

I was reading this book ('The Third Reich at War' by Richard Evans) and came upon this discussion of how the Nazis killed the institutionalized mentally ill. They produced two types of diets: a 'basic' diet and a 'normal' diet. The 'basic' diet had zero fat in it, whereas the 'normal' diet had about 20-25% fat. Those who were marked for death were given the 'basic' diet. All were dead by week six.
So much for ultra low fat diets. Even Ornish had to revise his position when some of his elderly low fat patients started getting suicidal thoughts and tendencies.

Tell your mom that the aspartame in the diet sodas causes brain tumors. Studies showed mice fed aspartame developed brain tumors. Your mom will say..I'm not a mouse. But my mother was a big aspartame eater, in her Breath Saver mints and Fudge pops every night and I used to bake a cake for her sweetened with Equal...She developed a brain tumor and died a year later.

Aspartame affects my nerves--probably because gluten already does and I was consuming it at a time I was also consuming gluten. At first, I found my eyes would become a little blurry after drinking diet soda so I decided to stop using it for a long time. Then years later I thought maybe I could get the occasional diet soda in a restaurant. I started feeling chest pains for a while. I decided to stop the soda and, guess what, no more symptoms. There is a nerve at my sternum that appears affected by gluten; that same nerve appeared to be affected by aspartame.
I was reading a lot about the AHA/ACC low cholesterol diets in the early 1990s (low fat, low cholesterol, low protein), for work, and thought, hey, I'd eat like that and maybe lose weight. Boy did I feel lousy. I may have lost a little weight, but I got flabby despite working out. Reading about Ornish did one good thing in that I started doing yoga.

Mayflowers, I'm soo sorry to hear about your mom. I forgot about the aspartame!. I rarely drink soda (mostly drink water) but when i do i drink a regular one. I know it's not the best but at least sugar has been around alot longer and i think by now we know it's effects. My mom always gives me a look when i get a regular soda but at least i only drink them occasionally and know they are safer than diet ones!. I wish she would get that she's addicted to diet sodas and along with her wine habit they are giving her a belly!. She used to have a lower belly paunch, but a couple of years ago she got reconstructive surgery to replace the breast she lost to breast cancer. When they suggested removing fat from an area of her body to construct her breast she said take it from my lower belly, she said she knew there was a reason she's been saving it all these years. She's always had a lower belly but since they removed the fat from her lower belly now she gains weight in her upper belly. I know she's just prone to store fat in that area, since i inherited that trait but alot of the cause is all the sugar she's ingesting.

This brought tears to my eyes because the same thing happened to my mother. She began using Equal per suggestion from a dietician advising her about her onset of diabetes. It doesn't take long to die from this type of brain tumor. I have impressed this upon my granddaughters so hopefully they won't be tempted by diet drinks as so many young people are.
Wow, that is very sad about your mothers. I had a friend who was incredibly addicted to sugared sodas and chocolate. She became very obese and knew that her habits were harming her. She would never consider taking drugs or drinking, but her dietary choices were as dangerous and addictive, it seems, as heroin. She, like two other women in her family, developed a uterine cancer, but hers was a "neuroendocrine" form and traveled to her brain. I think she was very insulin-resistant. Anyway, sodas of all types, and their sweeteners, seem to be addictive and ultimately very dangerous for certain people.
I went through a couple of years of chewing Equal gum (20 years ago) all day long. It kept me from snacking, so I thought it was a good idea. I developed a pain in my head, behind my right ear. It was a vibrating, buzzing, tingling kind of pain. Around that time, I read that aspartane was created as a neuro-toxin. When I stopped ingesting that chemical, the pain went away in a few weeks and never returned. Scary stuff!

There is a nerve at my sternum that appears affected by gluten;
wow!! funny you say that. I am pretty much convinced I have gluten issues.......I seem to have problems in that area when I have gluten. I've been trying to be gluten free, but not 100% successful yet, but reminders are always good. So, moral of the story........if gluten make is hurt, stop eating gluten, right.
